sciences and poster presentations by students besides delegates around the world. This

conference would create an ideal platform to share expertise addressing current technologies

involved in Green Chemistry & other allied fields of sciences. It will be a wonderful

opportunity for all the delegates as it will provide an excellent networking opportunity to

collaborate with the world class researchers and scientists.

About GCNCGreen Chemistry Network Centre (GCNC) was established in the Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi under the recommendation of World Leaders in Green Chemistry headed by Professor Paul Anastas (known as the father of Green Chemistry) with the following aims and objectives:

Build a Network for exchange of expertise, discussion and knowledge between industrialists and academics and between chemists and engineers with interests and expertise relevant to Green Chemistry.

Prepare and disseminate the teaching materials on Green Chemistry for school, college and university levels, with the simultaneous design of laboratory experiments for these levels as well.

Design trainings not just to expose the chemists to the concepts, principles and methodologies of Green Chemistry but also to empower them to bring this new knowledge back to their institution or industries.

Promoting research by taking up Green Chemistry Research Projects from Industry and Government agencies.

About NESAThis ACADEMY is of National level, registered by the provisions of Societies Act XXI of 1860 under the Government of Bihar in 1988, presently has its Head Quarter at 206, Raj Tower-1, Alaknanda Community Centre, New Delhi. The main objective of the Academy is to bring awareness about the environment among the masses by arranging lectures, demonstrations, t r a i n i n g p r o g r a m m e s , s e m i n a r s , symposium, conferences, publishing journals, etc.

Its major aims and objectives include promotion of environmental sciences among young minds and researchers, setting up regional and state Chapters for d isseminat ion of in format ion on environment, to hold Annual Conference, to organise national/international level conferences, symposium, seminars, meetings and workshops on themes of environmental concerns and to publish policy papers, synthesis volumes, proceedings, journals, newsletter, transactions and other publications for the promotion of Environmental Sciences.

Conference Overview

Introductory Background

Humans and animals have always been exposed to chemicals in our environment - natural products in food, smoke from cooking fires, sewage in drinking water, pesticides from plants etc. However, the dramatic increase in industrialization over the past three centuries has drastically changed both the quality as well as quantity of human exposures to both natural and synthetic chemicals. We all know that certain things are bad for us such as cigarette smoke and alcohol. But what about other substances in our environment such as gasoline fumes, dry cleaning fluids, pesticides, wood smoke, heavy metals? Environmental health risk assessment allows us to identify the potential hazards to human health and understand how serious such problems may be. It is composed of four components: exposure assessment; hazard identification; dose/response assessment; and risk characterization. Risk assessment is the scientific basis for standard setting. However, regulatory decision-making always involves issues other than science. Environmental health threats may come from physical agents, e.g., UV or ionizing radiation, or biologicals such as mold, insects, bacteria and viruses, as well as chemicals. Common environmental chemical pollutants include pesticides and herbicides; volatile organic compounds ( VOCs) such as benzene, toluene and chloroform; heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic; air contaminants such as carbon monoxide, ozone, particulate matter (PM) and second hand smoke; and persistent organic pollutants such as the dioxins, PCBs and DDT. Environmental chemicals can cause a broad spectrum of effects, which depend not only on route of exposure and dose, but also on the susceptibility of the recipient of the pollution. Age, gender, and genotype can have major effects on whether or not an exposure causes a problem. We also know that the elderly may be a population at special risk to environmental chemicals.
