National Geographic The National Parks An Illustrated HistoryAn inspired tribute to the astonishing beauty and priceless cultural treasures of America’s National Parks, National Geographic The National Parks: An Illustrated History is a lavish cele-bration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. This stunning volume collects the very best of National Geographic’s photographs, combined with an expertly told history: from the multi-hued layers of the Grand Canyon to the verdigris flame of the Statue of Lib-erty, this book presents a breathtaking panorama of the National Parks. Author Kim Heacox, an expert in the history of the National Parks and a former Denali National Park ranger, tells the unlikely story of the creation of the National Park Service and its wild success as it has grown over the last century, peppering his account with colorful characters both famous and little known. Beginning with the origins of the park service and tracing the evolution of its mission to protect “scenery” to becoming an advocate for cultural and natural preser-vation and conservation, Heacox weaves into his tale dozens of fascinating and stories and personalities.
From the first female park ranger to a decidedly amateur scuba expedition that unearthed a submerged Civil War treasure trove, Heacox takes readers on a VIP tour of America’s rich nat-ural and cultural heritage. Pages of eye-popping photo spreads punctuate each chapter and showcase the full sweep of wonders; from pristine coral reefs to the Gettysburg battlefield to glaciers and all the glorious diversity in between. A gift to give or keep, National Geographic The National Parks offers a breathtaking tour of the very best of America’s national treasures.
KIM HEACOX, an award-winning writer, photographer, and conservationist has lived in Alaska for 25 years. He is an expert in the history of the National Parks Service and a former Denali National Park ranger. He has written four books for National Geographic. His photography has appeared in National Geographic magazine. Heacox has made numerous journeys to Arctic Svalbard and Antarctica, and spends much of his time writing about and photographing life in Earth’s polar regions.

The Generals Patton, MacArthur, Marshall, and the Winning of World War IICelebrated historian Winston Groom tells the story of three remarkable men-of-arms who rose from the gruesome hell of the First World War to become the finest generals of their generation during World War II.
George Marshall, George Patton, and Douglas MacArthur redefined America’s ideas of military leadership and brought forth a new generation of American soldier. Their efforts revealed to the world the grit and determination that would become synonymous with America in the post-war years. Virginian George Marshall led his class at the Virginia Military Institute to become the principal planner of the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne, the greatest American operation, which ended the conflict. Afterward, he rose to become the Army’s Chief of Staff, where he juggled the volatility of generals such as Patton and MacArthur against the good of the country.
Like Marshall, George Patton, who is remembered as one of the most heroic and controversial generals in American history, overcame early academic difficulties to graduate at the top of his class at West Point. He would build and command the Army’s burgeoning tank division, lead the successful invasion of North Africa during World War II, and die under mysterious circumstances in 1945. Douglas MacArthur also graduated at the top of his West Point class and became known as the “bravest man in the U.S. Army” during the First World War, where he was commis-sioned the youngest general in the armed forces. He commanded in the Pacific in World War II, where his strategy famously defeated the Empire of Japan.
Filled with novel-worthy twists and turns, and set against the backdrop of the most dramatic moments of the twentieth century, The Generals is a powerful, action-packed book filled with marvelous surprises and insights into the lives of America’s most celebrated warriors.
WINSTON GROOM is the beloved author of 14 previous books, including Forrest Gump; The Aviators; Conversations with the Enemy (nominated for a Pulitzer Prize); 1942: The Year That Tried Men’s Souls; Vicksburg, 1863; and Shiloh, 1862.

Everest Revised and Updated Mountain Without MercyTimed to coincide with the release of the highly anticipated Universal film Everest starring Jake Gylenhaall and Keira Knightley, this updated edition of National Geographic’s best-selling book recounts the terror and triumph of the 1996 season on Everest. Written in suspenseful detail, the book documents how a courageous photographic team, facing hazards of their own, became an essential part of a rescue effort that brought some—but not all—of their companions down from the mountain alive. Added to the classic main text are fascinating updates: brief portraits of those who lived through the tragedy; a time line of subsequent climbing events on Everest and never- before-published detailed panoramics of Everest and the Himalaya.
CONRAD ANKER is a world-renowned mountaineer who has summited Everest three times and climbed many of the other most challenging heights around the world. Best known for having discovered the body of early 20th-century adventurer George Mallory on Everest in 1999, Anker is captain of The North Face Athlete Team and continues to inspire with his climb-ing prowess and his thoughtful dedication to the people of the Himalaya.

L egend has it that Aztec leader Moctezuma II drank fifty pitchers every day of a hot, frothy drink made from cacao
beans. The Aztecs used the beans as currency, so downing goblets of the mixture was almost like drinking liquid
gold.Moctezuma’s hot cacao drink bore little resem-
blance to the sweet and creamy hot chocolate that we enjoy today. It was a bitter blend, made from ground cacao beans, water, spices such as chili peppers, cinna-mon, special flowers, and other ingredients. To prepare the drink, servants poured it at great heights from one pitcher to another, creating a thick layer of foam that they would layer on top of the drink. The Aztecs believed that drinking cacao created strength, courage, and wis-dom. Some believed that it had medicinal, or even aphro-
disiacal powers. For Moctezuma, it was a personal passion and a symbol of power and opulence.

With an introduction by National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez, whose work has taken him from the Peruvian Andes to the deepest caves of Papua New Guinea, Rarely Seen captures once-in-a-lifetime moments, natural wonders, and little-seen objects from the far reaches of the globe.
STEPHEN ALVAREZ, who has captured some of the most rarely seen objects on earth, is a photojournalist who produces global stories about exploration, culture, religion, and the after-math of conflict. He has been a National Geographic photographer since 1995.

ever of the sky. By compiling ten years of images from
Hubble’s cameras, including many from the WFC3 installed
in 2009, the image disclosed galaxies so dim that the faintest
one shone at only a very tiny fraction of the brightness detect-
able by the human eye. From a very small area of the sky,
the XDF revealed some 5,500 galaxies and
carried astronomers back in time to observe
galaxies forming 13.2 billion years ago—only
450 million years after the big bang. This
accomplishment meant that Hubble and its
companion observatories had expanded our
view so far that it now covers 96 percent of
the life span of the universe.
BLANK FIELDS AND GRAVITATIONAL TELESCOPES
For the first two decades of its operational
life, Hubble explorations followed two basic
strategies in the hunt for extremely faraway galaxies: (1) point-
ing Hubble at relatively blank areas of sky to accumulate light
for long periods (as in the Hubble Deep Field and the Ultra
Deep Field), and (2) using clusters of galaxies as gravitational
lenses to brighten and magnify galaxies that lie beyond the
galaxy cluster (see Moment 13, page xxx).
In 2013, the Space Telescope Science Institute announced
plans to join these two approaches. The Frontier Fields pro-
gram linked Hubble with Spitzer and Chandra to secure
images of distant galaxies some 10 to 100 times fainter than
any observed before. To this end, astronomers planned for
Hubble to inspect 6 fields centered on a strong lensing galaxy
cluster and 6 blank fields adjacent to the
cluster. The first galaxy cluster Hubble
observed was Abell 2744, also known as
Pandora’s Cluster.
DEEPER INTO THE FUTURE
At 25 years old, the Hubble Space Telescope
promises even more. Paired with other
remarkable astronomical instruments, it
helps us dive ever more deeply into outer
space and ever farther back toward the ori-
gins of our universe. Just over a century ago,
George Darwin, son of Charles Darwin and a very distin-
guished scientist in his own right, assumed that it was as futile
to imagine that humans “can discover the origin and tendency
of the universe as to expect a housefly to instruct us as to
the theory of the planets.” Astronomers undermined
Darwin’s assumption within decades of his confident declara-
tion. What on Earth would he have made of the profound
and remarkable efforts to pin down the age of the universe,
to explore what lies at the most distant reaches of space, and
the quest to determine the rate of the universe’s expan-
sion—all advances in our understanding in which Hubble has
played such a very significant part?
H25FACT

covered by the Hubble Ultra Deep Field,

straw.

The Hubble Cosmos 25 Years of New Vistas in SpaceThe Hubble Telescope has now gazed into deep space for 25 years, imaging galaxies, nebulas, and supernovas for a new picture of the universe and our place in it. Space historians David DeVorkin and Robert Smith team up to tell the stories of 25 iconic moments in the illustrious telescope’s career, illustrated with breathtaking, never-before-seen images. Here are the major challenges and triumphs, the key scientific findings, the brilliant scientists behind the scenes, and the public’s love affair with a space telescope. Here too, selected by top science and photo editors at National Geographic, are the 25 “Hubble All-Stars”: awe-inspiring images of beauty and won-der—the best pictures yet—achieved thanks to this amazing space-based telescope. And, more than anything, here is the story of how the Hubble space telescope expanded and enriched our concept of the universe we live in, to wondrous visions never before seen.
DAVID DEVORKIN is senior curator of history of astronomy and the space sciences. DeVorkin’s major research interests are in the origins and development of modern astrophysics during the 20th century and the origins and development of the space sciences from the V-2 rocket to the present.
ROBERT W. SMITH is professor of history and director of the science, technology, and society program at the University of Alberta, Canada. His research interests are in the history of the physical sciences, astronomy, cosmology, and spaceflight in the United States.
ROBERT P. KIRSHNER, Clowes Professor of Science in the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University, accomplished groundbreaking work on supernovas and the expansion of the universe using the Hubble Space Telescope.

T H E S E C O N D S E R V I C I N G M I S S I O N to Hubble in February 1997 installed
a new camera in one of the telescope’s axial instrument bay called NICMOS
(Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer). NICMOS extended
Hubble’s eyes deeper into the infrared, that part of the spectrum of light energy we
can’t see with our eyes but can feel with our skin as heat. NICMOS has three cameras
and all sorts of attachments to sense either narrow or broad bands of the spectrum.
It can also sift the light bands themselves into a spectrum, block
central portions to reveal faint outer details in objects, and
even sense if the light is polarized or aligned in ways that reveal
the presence of magnetic fields. It is an army unto itself, or at
the least a brigade. And it does all this with the ultrahigh spatial
resolution of the corrected Hubble optical system.
NICMOS
NICMOS was optimized to see cool objects, not only in tem-
perature but also on the light spectrum: objects that are
extremely interesting to astronomers who want to understand
how galaxies formed in the early universe, or how stars and
planetary systems form out of the cool, vast clouds of gas and
dust in space that shroud and nourish them. To sense cool
objects, however, Hubble’s eyes themselves have to be cooled
to temperatures well below that of the objects they want to
study. So NICMOS sits in a refrigerator called a “dewar” that
uses solid nitrogen as a deep coolant, or “cryogen.” The detec-
tors sit in a series of three nested cylindrical capsules that look
like a set of progressively larger propane tanks. At launch, the
middle tank carried 240 pounds of solid nitrogen coolant in a
matrix of aluminum foam. The coolant was pumped in as a
liquid, and then cold helium gas was circulated through pipes
in the chamber to freeze the nitrogen completely to about 40
kelvins (40 degrees above absolute zero). Under operating
conditions, the coolant was expected to last about four years.
In actual fact, various problems reduced it to only two years,
after which NICMOS was taken offline pending the next ser-
vicing mission, when it would be reinvigorated by an active
closed-circuit cooling system.
Within its first year, NICMOS observed faint galaxies in
the Hubble Deep Field (see Moment 08, page xxx). It also
peered into the dense center of our Milky Way galaxy, and
searched for and studied detailed structures of the disks of
gas and dust that surround many nearby stars. Among the first
users, a team of UCLA and Caltech astronomers proposed to
look at a rather puzzling object in the direction of the

Bad Days in History A Gleefully Grim Chronicle of Misfortune, Mayhem, and Misery for Every Day of the YearBest-selling author of A Treasury of Royal Scandals Michael Farquhar uncovers an instance of bad luck, epic misfortune, and unadulterated mayhem tied to every day of the year in this engrossing compendium of history’s worst moments. From Caligula’s blood-soaked end to hote-lier Steve Wynn’s unfortunate run-in with a priceless Picasso, Bad Days in History delves into the past to present 365 delightfully told tales of historically bad days. Farquhar’s cleverly written entries draw from the full sweep of history to take readers through a complete year of misery, including tales of lost fortunes (like the would-be Apple investor who pulled out in 1977 and missed out on a $30-billion-dollar windfall), romance gone wrong (like the 16th-century Shah who experimented with an early form of Viagra with empire-changing results), and truly bizarre moments (like the Great Molasses Flood of 1919). Catchy headlines draw readers into each entry while photographs and illustrations illuminate particularly memorable bad days, including the hopeful debut ads for the Ford Edsel, the special one-finger salute Korean POW’s designated for their unwitting captors, and the campaign photo that literally tanked Michael Dukakis’s presiden-tial campaign.
MICHAEL FARQUHAR is a former writer and editor for the Washington Post. He is the author of numerous books including the bestsellers A Treasury of Great American Scandals, Behind the Palace Doors, A Treasury of Royal Scandals, and A Treasury of Russian Scandals. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Robert “Bob” Conroy at the Connecticut National Guard camp at Yale University and the two become inseparable, eventually crossing an ocean and going to war together. What follows is an epic tale of how man’s best friend becomes an invaluable soldier on the front lines and in the trenches, a decorated war hero, and an inspiration to a country long after the troops returned home.
ANN BAUSUM has written nine National Geographic books for young readers during the past 12 years. Her publication list features six works of social justice history, two presidential history reference books, and a photobiography. She has won numerous awards, including a Sibert Honor Award from the American Library Association and three other national awards for literature.

A Place of Remembrance, the official book of the National September 11 Memorial, lists the names of every victim and the location of each name on the memorial. Proceeds from its sale support the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
A Place of Remembrance tells the emotional story behind the creation of the National September 11 Memorial, from the symbolism of the twin towers to the chaos of 9/11 to the long, complex, and sometimes contentious efforts to turn eight acres of downtown Manhattan into a lasting memorial to those lost in New York, Pennsylvania, and near Washington, D.C. The memorial—and this book about it—are not only tributes to the fallen but also reminders of a powerful connection we all share through the triumph of the human spirit.

Life From Scratch A Memoir of Food, Family, and ForgivenessWitty, warm, and poignant, food blogger Sasha Martin’s memoir about cooking her way to happiness and self-acceptance will resonate with fans of Julie and Julia and Tender at the Bone, the best-selling food memoir by Ruth Reichl.
Over the course of 195 weeks, Martin set out to cook—and eat—a meal from every country in the world. As cooking unlocked the memories of her rough-and-tumble childhood and the loss and heartbreak that came with it, Martin became more determined than ever to find peace and elevate her life through the prism of food and world cultures. From the tiny, makeshift kitchen of her eccentric, creative mother, to a string of foster homes, to the house from which she launches her own cooking adventure, Martin’s heartfelt, brutally honest memoir reveals the power of cooking to bond, to empower, and to heal—and celebrates the simple truth that happiness is created from within.
SASHA MARTIN is an MFK Fisher Award-winning writer, blogger, wife and mother who spent almost four years cooking her way around the world. Her work has been featured on NPR (Travel with Rick Steves), Whole Living, Bon Appétit, Smithsonian, The Huffington Post, and CNNgo. Her recipes have won awards from Amanda Hesser, former editor of the New York Times food section, and her website, Global Table Adventure, is a go-to hub for foodies around the world. Martin is a sought-after presenter, having spoken at many schools, seminars, and dinners including as a keynote presenter at the internationally attended Global Education conference.

The Rose Hotel A Memoir of Secrets, Loss, and Love From Iran to AmericaIn this powerful memoir, Iran-born author Rahimeh Andalibian tells the story of her family: their struggle to survive the 1979 revolution, their move to California, and their attempts to assimilate in the face of teenage rebellion, murder, addiction, and new traditions. A poignant but uplifting tale of family secrets, trauma, and renewal, this runaway self-published success will capture the hearts of those who love Reading Lolita in Tehran and House of Sand and Fog. In The Rose Hotel, Andalibian struggles to make sense of two brutal crimes: a rape, solved by her father, and a murder, of which her beloved oldest brother stands accused. She takes us first into her family’s tranquil, jasmine-scented days of prosperity in their luxury hotel in Mashhad, Iran. Their life is ruptured by the 1979 revolution as they flee: first to the safety of a mansion in Teh-ran, next to a one-room flat in London, and finally to California, where they suffer a different kind of revolution. Struggling to adjust to a new host culture, they soon discover that although they escaped Iran, they are not free from their own lies and hidden truths. As the family comes to grips with their new home, the strength of their bonds are tested by love, loyalty, compassion, hate, pain, loss—and the will to survive. Heartbreaking and intimately told, this is a universal story of healing, rebirth after tragedy, and hard-won redemption.
RAHIMEH ANDALIBIAN was born in Tehran and moved with her family to California in 1979, at the onset of the Iranian revolution. Raised and schooled in L.A., she is a clinical psychologist special-izing in intergenerational family therapy. A dynamic speaker and a savvy, promotion-driven author, she speaks frequently at conferences and has promoted the book on Martha Stewart Radio and BlogHer.

The Earth and the moon have a unique relationship. Have you ever wondered why there’s a
“dark side” of the moon? It’s an astronomical coincidence. The moon spins on its axis, just
like Earth, but the moon’s rate of rotation matches the rate of its progression around
Earth—it takes about 27.3 Earth days to complete both. Therefore, only one side of the
moon is visible toward the Earth, while the other side always faces away. The surface
of the moon has been compared to Swiss cheese. That pocked appearance is actually an
assemblage of craters caused by celestial objects crashing into the moon’s surface. Ouch!

WHICH DINOSAUR ARE YOU?
YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY A’S:
You’re a carnivore! These
hunters ate a lot of meat
(other dinosaurs!).
YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY B’S:
You’re an herbivore! These
plant-lovers grazed on leaves,
branches, and grass.
WHAT’S FOR DINNER?
One way to classify dinosaurs is to divide
them into two categories: plant-eaters
and meat-eaters.
Plant-eaters, known as herbivores, eat
grass, twigs, tree bark, and plants. If you
were to look inside a herbivore dinosaur’s
mouth, you’d discover wide, flat teeth—
perfect for grinding foliage. Small-bodied
dinosaurs of the bird-hipped variety
(called “ornithischian”) are an example
of Triassic herbivores. But a plant diet
didn’t prevent other dinosaurs from
growing very large!
Meat-eaters, known as carnivores,
eat diets consisting mostly of animal flesh and meat. You
wouldn’t want to look into this mouth, because a carnivore is
a hunter with a whole lot of razor-sharp teeth made for tearing things apart. Dinosaurs
of the Theropod group are one example of Triassic carnivores. Tyrannosaurus Rex hadn’t
arrived yet in the Triassic, but it’s a very famous carnivore.

“Los Angeles is ground zero for boho chic—the ultimate expression of California cool.” —Bridgette Bugay, stylist with Campden Hill Imports
According to L.A. stylist Bridgette Bugay, there is a relaxed playfulness to Angelenos’ style. “It ranges from simple elegance in a linen shift on
the beaches of Santa Monica to full-blown glamour in a gorgeous gown on Hollywood’s red carpets.”
Whether for hipster style or megawatt movie-star glamour, some of the most exclusive stores representing the L.A.-look exist on one little stretch of road—the sec-tion of Third Street between South Edinburgh Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard.
WhErE to shop: Moving east from Edinburgh to La Cienega, the first store of note is Trina Turk. A longtime resident of Silver Lake in Los Angeles, Trina’s California surfer and sun-inspired bright patterns are now world famous. A few blocks down on your left, enter Satine. Elegant but edgy, this store prides itself on carrying hard-to-find items—Isabel Marant Runway, exclusive Vanessa Bruno dresses, celeb-favored A.L.C., vintage Chanel bags, and Dior jewelry. For men, a similar fashion-haven exists a few blocks farther east, on the left side of the street: Douglas Fir. And don’t miss their affiliated shoe store located directly opposite, where you can find L.A.-only designers and some of the most
beautifully crafted men’s shoes you will ever see. Flavors are particularly good. With stunning clothes
and diet donuts, it’s no wonder celebrities have such an.designers and some of the most beautifully crafted.

The story goes that steeplechase racing began in the 1750s in Ireland when two foxhunters started bragging about whose horse was fastest. To settle the dispute, they picked two churches as landmarks and raced from steeple to steeple, from “point-to-point.” Over the ensuing decades the sport gained traction in Britain and eventually made its way to America. According to some accounts, the earliest recorded point-to-point in the New World was held in 1834 in Washington D.C. 75

exciting confluence of cuisines happening in Portland right now.
Zen in the Center In other cities, they pave paradise to put up a parking lot; in Portland, Joni Mitchell would be tickled to see that a parking lot has become, in 2000, Lan Su Chinese Garden, a classical Chinese garden that takes up a whole city block. Amble about the koi pond, and you’ll come across a number of pavilions, stone paths and a footbridge that will transport you to ancient China. This urban oasis also hosts special events like tea ceremonies, dim sum instructions
and outdoor summer concerts. Lan Su Chinese Garden, 239 Northwest Everett St., Port-land, OR, www.lansugarden.org
garden of good Not to be outdone, the Japanese community also has a garden of its own, well-manicured 5.5-acre grounds in the hills of western Portland. When you walk through the traditional wooden gate, you’ll be transported to a myoss-covered stone lanterns, enthralling waterfalls and blooming flowers. Pho a good time Portland may lack a traditional Asian enclave, but locals in the know head to 82nd Avenue for authentic Asian food. The rough-around-the-edges corridor is a delicious destination, especially with a number of notable Vietnamese eateries like Lanvin (8211 N.E. Brazee St.), which elevates Vietnam’s Francophone baking tradition with its crispy banh mi, flaky croissants, and sweet pains au noix. Pho Van (1919 S.E. 82nd Ave.), as the name suggests, excels in the art of Vietnamese noodle soup—as well as the vermicelli and grilled staples of the
Vietnamese cuisine. My Brother’s Crawfish (8220 S.E. Harrison St.), a Vietnamese-owned shellfish shack, puts an Asian spin on its seafood boils with fiery hot sauces—much like the kind you’ll find at Cajun Vietnamese joints down in Louisiana. Ha VL (2738 S.E. 82nd Ave.), an unassuming little place, serves an array of comforting soups, best for combatting the Northwest gloom.

n St. Josef’s WinderyDescending from wine-makers of Hungary and educated in the Riesling country of southern Ger-many, Josef Fleischmann created a Bavarian-style winery complete with timbered buildings half an hour south of Port-land, in the Willamette Valley. Come October, you can stomp grapes with his family in ten-foot oak barrels. The win-ery will provide Bavarian music you can step to. Tastings on Saturdays around the year. St. Josef’s Winery 28836 S. Barlow Rd. Canby, OR, www.stjosefswinery.com
n Jordan Vineyard & WineryReminiscent of the roll-ing hills of Gironde near Bordeaux, Sonoma Val-ley is without a doubt a romantic getaway. Visit the chateau-style
buildings and sun-drenched courtyard at Jordan Vineyard & Win-ery, which spans over 1200 acres. Tours and tastings require reserva-tion, but you can always drop by if you want to marvel at the gorgeous vineyards from the wind-ing, tree-lined driveway. Jordan Vineyard & Win-ery, 1474 Alexander Val-ley Rd., Healdsburg, CA, www.jordanwinery.com
n raffaldini Vineyards & Winery “Audentes Fortuna Iuvat,” or “Fortune favors those who dare” in Latin, is the motto of this styl-ish Italian-style winery in North Carolina. But you don’t have to be daring to visit Villa Raffaldini, the 6,000 square foot tasting room inspired by villas in Italy’s Mantua, from where the Raffaldini hails. Combining Italian
dolce vita with the stu-pendous views of the Blue Ridge and Brushy Mountains, this winery is a terrific place to sip handcrafted wine made from the estate’s Montep-ulciano grapes. Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery, 450 Groce Road, Ronda, NC, www. raf-faldini.com
n belhurst CastelLive out your inner Rapunzel in one of the towers of the Belhurst Castle, a 19th century stone edifice built with materials imported from Europe. You may think you’re in Europe when you wake up to the vista of Lake Seneca out your window. After all, the town is called Geneva on the Lake for a good reason. This romantic winery hotel’s rooms also hark back to the Old Continent, with
four-poster beds sur-rounded by wallpaper. Belhurst Castel, 4069 West Lake Rd., Geneva, NY, www.belhurst.com
n Château tailleefer lafonAs far as European expe-riences go, it doesn’t get much more authentic than Château Tailleefer Lafon—where French is the working language. You can rent this old-est vineyard in Quebec to earn the appellation “Château,” reserved for genuinely European vineyards. Abroad at Home The Best International Travel in North AmericaIn the tradition of Where the Locals Go, this beautifully illustrated, fact-filled book takes you on a trip around the globe—without ever leaving North America. Ideal for those who don’t want to spend the time or money to travel the world, this book presents a potpourri of international experiences in the United States and Canada.
Discover experiences in villages, neighborhoods, and regions that cover the breadth of North America’s great global diversity—Chinatowns and Little Italys, of course, but also Polish, German, French, Russian, and Japanese enclaves—as well as landscapes that make you think you could very well be in New Zealand or Provence or Tuscany.
Chapters are organized geographically, with entries providing guidance on how best to experience a locations international flavor, including deep-diving into the best archetypal food, art, music, architecture, history, festivals, and more. You’ll learn the inside scoop on where to find the best Chinese pot stickers or Peruvian causas; where to kick up your heels to polka; and how to celebrate Japanese new year or Mexican flag day. Abroad at Home helps you discover the exotic in your own backyard.

A family business run by two American expats, joy ride Tours (Museumplein, www.joyridetours.nl, 06 4361 1798, daily from May to Sept. or May to Oct. for tours tailored to your wishes) organizes daily cycling adventures with a personal touch for small groups—either around the city or out into the countryside. they also provide private tours and can create original routes on or off the beaten path to match your wishes. And your bike will be a townie Electra with seven speeds and hand brakes.

Bike RentalBright-red “tourist” bicycles from MacBike (www .macbike.nl) are ubiquitous throughout town in the form of coaster-brake bikes, hand-brake bikes, child bikes, cargo bikes, electric bikes, and tandems. They also, handily, have rental outlets at Centraal Station, Waterlooplein, and Leidseplein —and a great selection of maps offering a variety of themed bicycle routes, such as art, architecture, canals and bridges, windmills, and Rembrandt. A less commercial alternative can be found just around the corner from Centraal Station at Star Bikes Rental (www.starbikesrental.com). Run by an Australian expat, the store rents out traditional black Dutch bicycles (known as “grandma” and “grandpa” bikes), along with picnic baskets. Bike City (www.bikecity.nl), another tourist-friendly establishment in the Jordaan district, has similarly inconspicuous bicycles for hire.
Safety FirstThe Dutch make cycling look easy: A tall, blond, man wearing a suit weaves in and out of traffic, one hand holding up an umbrella against the rain; a student sits nonchalantly on a bike, legs dangling, while her friend peddles; a mother rushes past with a baby and toddler stuffed into seats at either end of her indispensable mode of transportation. Some wear helmets—most do not, because it isn’t required by law. Slowly, it will become apparent that common sense and cycling don’t always go hand in hand here. Only thanks to an extensive safety campaign (and the threat of being fined) do most of Amsterdam’s cyclists now use bike lights at night. And many ignore red traffic lights and cross roads at their peril. You will soon learn that cyclists rule in town, and tourists are considered fair game—wander accidentally into a bike lane and you will be publicly shamed with repeated bell-ringing and probably the odd Dutch expletive . . . or two. Sometimes it’s best to give into that old adage: If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.
Amsterdam’s small size,
inflated parking fees,
and flatness of its terrain
contribute to the popularity
of the bicycle over the car.
opposite: Public bicycle
racks are easily found
throughout the city.
On WheelsCycling is an intrinsic part of daily life for the Dutch, and Amsterdam is an
excellent example of a city with a sustainability sensibility that designs its
transportation system around the bike. In fact, the number of bicycles in the
city outnumbers that of its residents by roughly 880,000 to 780,000. Almost
250 miles (400 km) of bike paths wind their way through the city, and,
collectively, Amsterdam cyclists travel 1,250,000 miles (2 million km) a day.

Amsterdam in a DayExplore this diverse city from every angle
on a packed one-day tour.
qNDSM-werf Take the free 15-minute ferry ride along the IJ to the NDSM-werf. This former ship wharf is now a trendy artists’ hangout with graffiti-sprayed walls and street art made from recycled junk. Ferries depart every 15 minutes from behind Centraal Station.
tAnne Frank house (see pp. 118–121) The secret hiding place of the world’s most famous diarist. Walk back to the Westermarkt and follow Raadhuisstraat to Dam Square—or hop over the canal ring, taking the more interesting and scenic route.
rAmsterdam Museum (see pp. 56–59) Follow Amsterdam’s fascinating, one-thousand-year journey from a small fishing village to the bustling capital it is today. Walk west onto Prinsengracht and head north.
w The Canals (see pp. 144–145) Take the Canal Bus boat tour to the Rijksmuseum. On the way, you’ll sail past Waterloopleinmarkt and Hermitage Amsterdam.
u red-light District (see pp. 70, 78–79) This notorious tourist attraction is best viewed at night, when the neon lights reflect up from the water and the atmosphere on the streets is buzzing.
yDam Square (see pp. 50–51) This is where it all started. Amsterdam is derived from Amstelredam, the name of the fishing settlement that blocked the Amstel River at the Dam. Head north along Warmoesstraat to the edge of the city’s red-light district.

e rijksmuseum (see pp. 158–161) See Rembrandt’s 17th-century “The Night Watch” in all its glory. Then walk down Spiegelgracht at the start of the city antiques quarter and onto Nieuwe Spiegelstraat. Turn left onto the Herengracht, walking past the elegant wide-fronted canal houses until you’re parallel to the Spui. Cross the Singel canal.

n Reptiles & Amphibians Reptiles and amphibians are traditionally grouped together for their biological and ecological similari-ties rather than close relationships based on evolu-tion. Amphibians are the older of the two. They evolved from lobe-finned fishes about 360 million years ago and have retained a connection to watery or moist habitats, at least for the purposes of repro-duction. The ancestors of reptiles appeared about 40 million years later and evolved into the creatures we know today. They have impermeable skin that minimizes water loss and other adaptations for life out of water. Despite this evolutionary sequence, reptiles often get first billing in field guides.
The study of reptiles and amphibians is the subject of the field of herpetology. The species represented in these two groups often are called herpetofauna, or merely “herps.” These terms ultimately derive from the ancient Greek for “to creep.” From a North American perspective, rep-tiles include crocodilians, turtles (and tortoises), liz-ards, snakes, and an amphisbaenian (worm lizard). Amphibians include salamanders, frogs, and toads.
n What Is a Reptile?Reptiles are ectothermic, which means that they can-not control body temperature by internal physiological processes. They rely on strategies such as basking in the sun to raise temperature and “rev up” metabolic systems, shuttling between sun and shade, and rest-ing underground to avoid conditions that could fry or freeze them. Reptilian bodies are covered with scales, shields, or plates, and most reptiles that have toes have claws on them. Most species lay shelled eggs (all croco-dilians and turtles do), but a few lizards and a fair num-ber of snakes give live birth. Young reptiles are usually miniature versions of their parents at hatching or birth.
Reptiles occupy a wide variety of habitats in the United States and Canada, just about every type except alpine tundra. Many are secretive and elusive, even those that live in close proximity to humans. Many are fossorial (burrowing) and noctur-nal, adding to their mystique.
n What Is an Amphibian?Amphibians are also ectothermic, but unlike reptiles,

Reptiles & AmphibiansThe Water–Land Connection3
Reptiles and amphibians represent widely distributed groups of vertebrates
that show many vestiges of their ancient lineages. From crocodilians that
seem to lumber straight from the Triassic period some 200 million years ago,
to snakes and lizards that slither and scurry, to salamanders and
frogs that play out their double lives in water and on land, reptiles
and amphibians offer an understanding of the past and present.
A Texas Horned Lizard lends a prehistoric presence among arid-land flowers. The reptile’s distinctive horns and flattened, toadlike body suggest the erroneous common name Horned Toad.

Bahadur Shah II, is forced into exile
This effectively gave him control of the sultanate. Then, after defeating the Rajput Confederacy at the Battle of Khanwa (1527), he became master of the whole Indus valley, the most prosperous region of India.
akbar “the great” When Babur died in 1530, he was succeeded by his son Humayun, who could not retain control over his father’s dominions. He fled to Persia in 1540, but returned in 1555 and recaptured his father’s capital of Delhi. His exile in Persia gave Humayun a taste for Persian learning and culture, but he died within a year of regaining his throne, before he could fulfil his dream of transforming Delhi into a great center of scholarship and the arts. Humayun was succeeded by his teenage
son Akbar “the Great” (1556–1605), who was widely regarded as the greatest of the Mughal emperors. He was a wise ruler and a mighty warrior. During his long reign the empire’s borders stretched from Persia in the west to Bengal and the mouth of the Indus in the east. He pushed southwards, too, capturing Gujarat and reaching Bombay. He was also known for his religious tolerance towards Hindus, which did much to remove a source of dissent within the empire.
The Mughal Empire was an Islamic power that ruled much of the Indian sub-continent for more than three centuries. It was founded by the Timurid prince Babur, a Muslim ruler from Central Asia who invaded the sub-continent in the
mid-1520s. The term Mughal (or Mogul) itself has been linked to “Mongol,” underlining the Asiatic roots of the dynasty. Babur seized control of the lower valley of the River Indus, and in 1526 he defeated the Sultan of Delhi at the Battle of Panipat.
above right: An engraving of Akbar “the Great” (1542–1605), who stretched the empire’s bounds and ruled it wisely. below: The Red Fort in Old Delhi, built between 1638 and 1648, served as the Mughal capital until 1857.
an expanding empireFor a century after the death of Akbar “the Great” in 1605, the borders of the empire continued to expand, as successive Mughal emperors—Jahangir (1605–27), Shah Jahan (1628–58), and Aurangzeb (1658–1707)—sought to conquer the Deccan plateau and southern India. Internal opposition from the Marathas, the Sikhs, and the Rajputs did little to weaken the empire until the death of Aurangzeb, when the Mughal dominions began to fall into decline through a combination of weak leadership and foreign invasions. At its height in 1707, the Mughal Empire had extended almost to the southern tip of India. Three decades later it was unable to defend its own capital. In 1739 the Persian emperor Nadir Shah sacked Delhi in 1739, and looted the Mughal “peacock throne,” taking it back to Persia with him.
The growing power of the Hindu Maratha dynasty, its neighbor to the west, further weakened
the Mughal Empire, as did dynastic strife, and in 1752 the Mughal emperor sought the protection of the Marathas. From that point onward, the Mughal emperor in Delhi became little more than a puppet ruler. In 1804, the ageing Emperor Shah Alam II accepted the protection of the British East India Company, which referred to him and his successors as kings rather than emperors. The last Mughal ruler was Bahadur Shah II (1837–57), who was exiled by the British in the wake of the Indian Mutiny of 1857, thereby bringing to an end three centuries of Muslim rule in the Indian subcontinent.
The Mughal golden age
The reign of Shah Jahan (1628–58) was seen as the golden age of
the Mughal empire. While he was a reasonably successful military commander, Shah Jahan’s most lasting legacy was architectural. He ordered the building of the Taj Mahal outside Agra between 1632 and 1652 as a memorial to his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal. He was also responsible for the construction of the magnificent pearl mosques in Agra, Delhi, and Lahore, and the complex of palaces and mosques of Shahjahanabad in Delhi with the Red Fort at its heart. Roads and waterways linked the empire’s towns and cities, and artistry flourished under imperial patronage. However, his military campaigns also drained the vast Mughal treasury, and when he fell ill in 1658, his son Aurangzeb seized power, and kept Shah Jahan prisoner in Agra until his father’s death in 1666.
Science and Technology
One of the great achievements of the Mughal dynasty was the marriage
of Islamic scientific research with Indian scholarship. Many improvements in metallurgy came about through the development of Mughal military technology, and 17th-century India became one of the most advanced metallurgical centers in the world. Science, medicine, and astronomy benefitted from the patronage of the Mughal emperors. The observatory built by Humayun outside Delhi was one of the first facilities of its kind, and Indian astronomy was considered highly advanced during the Mughal Empire’s heyday.

to check weather conditions for tomorrow’s grueling day on the board.

facts & stats•The Best Fish and Chip Shops•
F ish and chip shops, or “chip-
pies,” first sprang up because they offered cheap and relatively nutritious food for the masses. Refrigeration and the railways—which brought fresh North Sea fish to the capital—led to their proliferation in the late 19th century.
• Golden Hind (73 Marylebone Lane, W1U, tel 020 7486 3644) has been serving fish and chips to Marylebone locals since 1914. The lines and the extension of their premises merely underline the fact that they know what they’re doing.
• Kerbisher & Malt (164 Shepherd’s Bush Road, W6, tel 020 3556 0228, kerbisher.co.uk). Old-time fryers might turn over in their graves, but
attention to detail such as double-frying the chips makes this new made-to-look-old place (white tiles, long shared wooden tables) in Hammersmith one of the best in town.
• If you’re in Westminster and fish and chips is what you need, head for The Laughing Halibut (38 Strutton Ground, SW1, tel 020 7799 2844). Don’t expect frills: Most
chippies are known as fish and chip shops, not restaurants, for a reason.
• Poppies (6-8 Hanbury St., E1, tel 020 7247 0892, poppiesfishandchips .co.uk). Poppies dates from 1945 and overdoes the British kitsch—juke-box, mini red phone box, pictures of Cliff Richard—but stick to fish (fried or grilled),
