Advertised Prices for Specialty Crops at Major Retail Supermarket Outlets ending during the period of 05/02 to 05/141,2

A Special Day for Mom

Bright strawberries, tulips, and roses were splashed across flyers this week as shoppers prepared celebrations for Mother's Day. New crop apricots and plums added to the abundance of local and seasonal items hailing the beginning of summer. This week saw more retailers resuming weekly ads.Ten percent of regularly reported stores had no ad this week and specifically cited COVID-19 as the reason, down from 12% last week. Several states have relaxed stay-at-home orders or plan to soon, and retailers are left wondering how store traffic, buying patterns, and consumer preferences will be affected.

Total ad numbers this week were 273,418, about steady from last weeks 272,269 and an 18% increase from 2 weeks ago. Ad numbers this week were 23% lower than this week last year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 134,649 (49% of all ads), onions and potatoes 20,872 (8%), vegetables 107,649 (39%), herbs 365, and ornamentals 9,883 (4%). The number of ads for organic produce was 27,398, 10% of total ads. The number of ads for hemp were 102.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included mangos at 26%, apple juice at 16%, and 2 lb strawberries at 12%. Significant decreases included Honeycrisp applesat 35%, Hass avocados at 19%, raspberries at 17%, and cantaloupes at 11%. There were no significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week. There were no significant increases nor decreases in price for vegetables this week.
