The six men were found guilty ofcontempt of the Supreme Court inconspiring to lynch Ed Johnson aNegro at Chattanooga Tenn March19 1906 They were adjudged guilty-
on the last day of the 1908 term ofthe Supreme Court but were granted a stay pending petition for rehear j
ingAtthe time Johnson was lynched-
an appeal of his case was pendingThe date of his execution had beenset but the Supreme Court grantedhim a stay of ten days On the nightbefore the date originally set for thehanging a mob of more than 100 menbroke into the jail took the Negro tothe bridge over the Tennessee Riverhanged him to a girder and riddledhis bodv with bullets
