As pool contractors, we keep many tools and supplies in our trucks and trailers to perform our duties. We have shovels and saws to install plumbing, tools to tie wire and steel, test kits and service items that enable us to perform our maintenance duties, and chemicals to balance and sanitize water; not to mention, drawings and surveys to define size, shape, and location and hydraulic engineering to help us size piping and flow rates. But many of us forget other items that are important to not just installing or maintaining pools and spas, but tools to run our businesses. These are the tools that enable us to conform to standards and codes, laws and regulations.

The ANSI standards are a must for any pool or spa contractor. The Florida building code, although voluminous and expensive, holds our construction standards and guidelines.

Florida Statute 64E-9, is the comprehensive standard that public pools, spas, and interactive water features must abide by. And these documents

only cover the technical aspects of our jobs. There are also documents and literature about human resource guidelines, the FSPA wage and hour manual, and many other references that can help us successfully and legally run our businesses. All of these are important items in our tool boxes.

Yet many companies and contractors don’t possess these, or have outdated versions. They continue to ply their trade based on memory and old time experiences. It is easy to continue to perform our duties as we have in the past, doing things “like we have always done them.” But the best businesses and superior craftsmen work “on” their businesses, not just “in” their businesses. They stay up to date and abreast of the new laws, codes and techniques available to them. They separate themselves from their competition through knowledge and good business practices. They don’t run afoul of the laws, because they know the laws.

These types of craftsmen are the type of people who belong to this association. I find that the people who are members of the FSPA, in general, understand the importance of rules, codes, standards and laws. They invest in their businesses through knowledge and commitment to doing things right.

Our association has many ways to help in these areas, for example, through local meetings, continuing education classes, discounted standards, and manuals tailored to our industry. Knowledge can be gained through interaction with fellow craftsman at FSPA sponsored events and social gatherings. Most of our members are glad to share with their fellow members incidents or events that have affected their businesses. Usually, all you have to do is simply ask. There is a world of experience at your fingertips.

Please review your “toolbox”. See if the FSPA can help you attain the most updated references necessary to do your job properly. Make sure you have the most updated versions and standards available. It only proves your commitment to quality and willingness to grow. Not just grow your business, but grow as a craftsman too!

Communicate with your customersAs we approach the summer months everyone

gets busier and the result can be forgetting to keep your customers informed about their pool. This happens in all areas – construction, remodeling and service. The FSPA frequently gets phone calls from these frustrated customers. And, by the time they find us they’re usually at a boiling point. The pool company is no longer taking their calls or responding in any way. They just want someone to listen to them, so we do.

Every customer is different, every pool is different and every problem is different. But, the one thing I have learned from “listening” to these customers for almost two decades is that most of this frustration could have been prevented if there was frequent, complete and open communication. The challenge in this is everyone communicates differently. So, early on in the relationship with your customer figure out how THEY want to be communicated WITH. Is it by phone, email, text message? Do they want all the data on their pool and photos or do they just need a semi-regular status update? Be sure that any employee who is on the customer’s team knows their expectations.

Also, consider being a proactive about informing your current and past customers about their pool. Have a customer e-newsletter (or just Facebook page) where you can share information. Some examples include what to do before and after a hurricane, reminding them about keeping kids safe around the pool, how to check their heaters before the cooler months, etc.

Be the pool pro that everyone wants in their backyard! When people talk about their pool company the one who has good communication channels is going to be remembered as well as the one who really messed up. Communicate, communicate, communicate!

It’s the busy season so plan ahead - which projects are going to win YOU a Design Award?

Chemistry training, should it be required?

Years ago our industry was deregulated and if you wanted to start a pool cleaning business no certifications, qualifications or experience were required. You bought cleaning equipment and a vehicle and - Shazam! - you were now a pool cleaning business! Harmless, right? No insurance required, I mean what harm can be done? Oh, maybe popping a hole or two through a screen

enclosure, turning valves wrong and melting down a pump? Live and learn. It’s just pool cleaning! Except this, in addition to pool cleaning you can, while you are there, go ahead and maintain the water chemistry. No big deal, right? Wrong!

The chemistry is critical in protecting the folks using the pool and the homeowner’s investment! Consider this, one segment of our industry had to make a major modification to their products directly relating to chemistry! Bad chemistry would destroy a major component and literally make them now an

expensive piece of scrap. We know changes solved this, but hopefully you know bad chemistry still can damage those products not covered, nor should they be, under warranty! How about salt systems? Can they be damaged by bad chemistry? For sure! Overuse drastically shortens the cell life and bad chemistry can destroy the cell itself, not covered under warranty, nor should it be! You can certainly severely stain a pool finish and permanently damage one in a few weeks.

So your basic pool cleaning company can maintain water chemistry without any competency or qualifications. For review, bad chemistry can result in harming people swimming, making someone sick with too much or too little chlorine, spreading RWI’s (Recreational Waterborne Illness), and can damage or destroy the owner’s investment.

How about chemical handling? Is it ok to mix chemicals? They are all created to treat pools, so they should mix and play nice together right? In Pinellas County, where I live, two of the biggest fires I can remember were at pool distributors. Both started when one type of very volatile chlorine came in contact with other chemicals. They burned so hot it melted one steel building to the ground. One burned for days as water, yes the same stuff we swim in, made it worse trying to extinguish it.

So we think it is ok for the new pool cleaning service to handle chemicals without any training? I think not! Mix chemicals wrong in your vehicle or at the pool and you can have an explosion or fire! There are excellent training

programs available, FSPA offers one, that are an excellent first requirement for anyone start ing a pool cleaning business doing residential cleaning. Cleaning commercial pools already requires it. For the safety of the folks using pools and their investment, training and certification must again be required!

What does your “cover” say about you?

Do you want the latest secret on how to increase your pay without having to work longer hours? With a little pre-planning and some extra time in front of the mirror each morning you can easily increase your sales. Despite what we all see in the public today with tattoos, piercings and casual clothing, your appearance still weighs heavily in the sales process. In a sales transaction

the pre-planning of your appearance and grooming is critical because you are judged almost immediately.

According to a recent Forbes Magazine article “These computations are made at lightning speed.” Researchers from NYU found that we make 11 major decisions about one another in the first seven seconds of a meeting. Surprisingly, the nonverbal cues weigh just as heavy as the verbal. Studies have shown nonverbal cues have more than four times the impact on the impression you make than anything you say. Given the fact that you may only meet your given prospect once or twice your appearance is crucial from the start. Many times you will not get a second chance!

I have noticed in our industry that many of my colleagues dress very casually because our work environment is outdoors and it is hot. That does not mean you need to look sloppy. You can still keep a business casual appearance which most consumers in Florida will respond to well. Simply dressing in clothes that are clean from stains, bleach marks or tears and are pressed will make a big difference. Think about when you are a consumer of a large ticket item. How are the sales staff dressed? How do they appear? Doesn’t this help you trust them?

“The goal of a reputable business is to project a professional image that describes the nature of the business, its product and/or services and the people working in it. A goal of a professional image is to maintain the integrity of your brand and build credibility.” - Cynthia Bull, internationally published editor and writer, including a column called The Importance of a Professional Image.

So think about it tomorrow morning when you go to grab the first thing in your closet or drawer… People still judge a book by its cover! What does your “cover” say about you?

2018 Bill Tracking Final Report By Jennifer Hatfield, FSPA Government Relations Consultant / [email protected]

Through the end of March Governor Scott acted on the bills FSPA was monitoring that passed this session. The four bills listed below were all signed into law on March 26. In addition to those bills, the Governor also approved this year’s tax package, HB 7087, on March 23. The $170 million tax package was one of the smallest in recent years and focused primarily on farmers and property owners with damages from Hurricane

Irma. However, it did include a reduction in the commercial property tax – this business rent tax that some FSPA members may be paying will decrease from 5.8% to 5.5% beginning January 1, 2019.

For a complete rundown on all the bills FSPA monitored this session, along with many details of the 2018 session, please review previous reports that can be found on the FSPA website. The four bills the Governor signed into law this week are listed below:

Hurricane season 2018: Will we have another Irma?

Could this be another active year? Another catastrophic year?If so, are you prepared? Do you have enough insurance

to sustain both the physical damage to building and business personal property? What is your % Wind/Hail deductible? Do you have a separate Flood insurance policy? One of the scariest possibilities of Irma was the storm “surge”. How about the financial burden? Loss of income, additional expenses to resume

operations in temporary facilities, etc. can all be insured against. And, they can also be expensive to absorb.

Hurricane season begins on June 1. So, are we prepared for another big hit?

NOAA recently released its hurricane season outlook and researchers said the Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be just as busy this year, but possibly not as destructive, as the record-breaking season in 2017.

The pre-season forecast from Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project calls for 14 named storms, of which seven are predicted to strengthen into hurricanes, with three becoming major storms that are Category 3 or higher.

The research team predicts that 2018 hurricane activity will be about 135 percent of the average season.

By comparison, 2017’s hurricane season was about 245 percent of the average season and featured Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, which devastated parts of the United States and portions of the Caribbean.

The lead author of the report, Phil Klotzbach, said that the 2018 hurricane season is exhibiting characteristics similar to 1960, 1967, 1996, 2006 and 2011.

“The years 1960, 1967 and 2006 had near-average Atlantic hurricane activity, while 1996 and 2011 were both above-normal hurricane seasons,” Klotzbach said.

He also caution that their forecast is “intended to provide a best estimate of activity,” and warn residents in coastal area to take proper precautions regardless.

“It takes only one storm near you to make this an active season,” said Department of Atmospheric Science Associate Professor Michael Bell.

Five years with similar pre-season February and March atmospheric and oceanic conditions were selected as “analog” years that the 2018 hurricane season may resemble. These years were characterized by weak La Niña to weak El Niño conditions during August-October, but with a wide variety of tropical and North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) patterns, due to the large uncertainty as to what the Atlantic SSTs will look like this summer and fall:

• 1960 (8 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and 2 intense hurricanes)• 1967 (8 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 1 intense hurricane)• 1996 (13 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 6 intense hurricane)• 2006 (10 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 2 intense hurricanes)• 2011 (19 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 4 intense hurricanes)

The average activity for these years was 11.6 named storms, 6.2 hurricanes, 3.0 major hurricanes, and an ACE of 114—slightly above the long-term average. The most notable storms during these years were Category 4 Hurricane Donna

of 1960, Category 5 Hurricane Beulah of 1967, Category 3 Hurricane Fran of 1996, and Category 3 Hurricane Irene of 2011.

The CSU team cited two main reasons why this may be a slightly above-average hurricane season:

1. The current weak La Niña event in the Eastern Pacific appears likely to transition to neutral conditions over the next several months, but it is not anticipated that there will be a significant El Niño event this summer/fall. If El Niño conditions are present this fall, this would tend to favor a slower-than-usual Atlantic hurricane season due to an increase in the upper-level winds over the tropical Atlantic that can tear storms apart (higher vertical wind shear).

2. The western tropical Atlantic is anomalously warm right now, while portions of the eastern tropical Atlantic and far North Atlantic are anomalously cool. Consequently, the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO) index is near its long-term average. A positive AMO is typically linked with above-average Atlantic hurricane activity; a negative AMO is typically associated with below-average activity.

As always, the CSU team included this standard disclaimer:“Coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making

landfall to make it an active season for them. They should prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted.”

And this is what we all really need to keep in mind. Remember all of what Irma could have been and not only what it was (which was bad enough). Whether it is by insurance or other means, make sure you are fully and properly protected.

FSPA continues sponsorship of FBA Leadership Summit

The FSPA was a Premier Sponsor o f t h e 2 0 1 8 FBA Leadersh ip Summit at the FFA Leadership Training Center in Haines City Florida. Scott Kondor, Pentair, and Charlie Chansen, Hayward, brought

training trailers to show the students some equipment and give them an idea of what a career in the pool industry can look like. FSPA volunteers were able to share their real-life swimming pool industry experiences. In response to the survey question, “What class was the most interesting in terms of information provided?” a student responded, “ Pool construction was the most informational because I learned the most in this class out of all the classes.” With the growing interest by high school students in the construction industry the summit has expanded its career exploration classes to 2 days with over 100 students being introduced to the swimming pool industry. A special thanks to FSPA volunteers, Jim Bingold, Proline Distributors, Steve Hackl, Hackl Pool Construction Company, and Mike Kopke, Pebble Technology. Visit www.futurebuildersofamerica.org/leadership-summit to view a slide show of the event.
