21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this

rock I will build my church." Simon got a new name

after his profession of faith. As soon as he declared to

Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,"

Jesus renamed him with a title that means "rock." And

with that name he gave Peter the mission to be a

solid foundation upon which he would build his

church. Not Peter's church. Not James or Paul's

church. Not Martin Luther's or John Calvin's or any-

body else's. This is Jesus' church, the church of Christ

himself, that we call the Catholic Church.

So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority

in the church--"the keys to the kingdom of heaven"--

to a human leader. Peter was thus established as the

first pope. He exercised a special kind of headship,

within the community of the apostles and the church

at large, because Jesus gave him the power to do so,

not because Peter claimed it for himself. And so too

every pope since, right down to our Holy Father to-

day, exercises this unique leadership within the

Church.

What a gift this is to us! Jesus knew well the human

tendency to squabble and disagree, to argue and

compete. He knew that the church would be prone

to all of this because of her members, and that pro-

viding a final voice of authority, saying in effect that

"the buck stops here" would be helpful for maintain-

ing unity. As Catholics, even in spite of the differing

opinions and perspectives that are manifest in the

Church, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of

identity and belief thanks in large part to the papacy.

Today, may we give thanks for the pope and pray for

him as he strives to lead all of us closer and closer to

Christ.

MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS

FALL CHOIR: Do you have the voice of an angel? Well,

even if not, we would love to have you in our parish choir!

We rehearse on Thursday evenings at 7:00 and sing at the

10:30am mass on Sundays. We're taking the summer off but

will resume back in September. It's a great way to get in-

volved in parish life and add depth to your spiritual journey.

CHILDREN'S CHOIR:

We're also starting a children's choir, for children ages 5-13

(kindergarten through 8th grade). If your child has ex-

pressed interest in receiving musical instruction in any

form, this is an excellent opportunity to learn musical

fundamentals and have fun singing with other kids.

PIANO HUNT: Do you have a piano that you'd like to donate,

or do you know someone who does? We are looking for a

piano to accompany our organ music up in the choir loft.

We will pay for moving costs, we just need the piano!

En nuestro tiempo existen una gran variedad de opinio-

nes sobre Jesús. Algunas no han sido bien reflexionadas.

Otras sí. Pero lo que debería de contar no es lo que mu-

chos dicen de Jesús, sino cómo respondemos personal-

mente ante la pregunta de Jesús: "¿Quién dice la gente

que es el Hijo de hombre?" "Ahí está el detalle". Lo que

nos debe de preocupar es el cómo buscar una intimidad

personal con Jesús y no andar presumiendo todo lo que

"sabemos" de Jesús. Solamente así podremos decir que

estamos en camino al discipulado, identidad y cumpli-

miento de la misión a la que hemos sido llamados. Traba-

jemos pues en la relación personal con Jesús por medio

de la oración y la alabanza.

Debido a su respuesta, Jesús llamo a Simón "dichoso".

La fe en Cristo da felicidad. ¡Qué oportuna fue la pregunta

de Jesús a sus discípulos! Pero esta fue para todos, no

solo para Pedro. Sin embargo, fue a Pedro a quien Dios

reveló la respuesta. Pedro pronto contesto: "Tú eres el

Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo". Después de la respuesta

viene el cambio de nombre a "Pedro", seguido de la res-

ponsabilidad de la misión de guía y autoridad en la comu-

nidad de sus discípulos, en su Iglesia: "Yo te daré las

llaves del Reino de los cielos". Señor, ayúdanos en la

Eucaristía a renovar nuestra respuesta de fe y ser fieles a

tu Iglesia. ¡San Pedro nos da el ejemplo! ¿Estamos dis-

puestos a ser discípulos con intención?
