The characteristics used to describe a substance are known as properties.(ex. “wet” “shinny”)

There are two categories for properties. Chemical and Physical.

Physical Properties are readily observable such as color, smell, luster, texture.

Chemical Properties are only observable during a chemical reaction. (Ex. sulfur combusting)

Page 3: Nature%20of%20 matter[1]

Think about whether or not the size of the sample would affect the substance. (ex. Copper-color & Water- 32 degrees)

Properties that do not matter on the size of the sample are called Intensive Properties.

Properties that depend on the size are called Extensive Properties.

A large amount of carbon take up more area than a small amount. (ex. Volume)

Stepping on a can and crushing it changes its shape, but the state of matter is the same.

Melting ice to water forces a physical change by adding energy,

This causes a change in matter.

Matter can be changed by motion, temperature and pressure.

Occur on a smaller scale. Some are obvious (ex.

Color change), but must occur between molecules and are unseen.

As Iron (Fe) rusts you can see the changes. The iron has changed because the molecules have become oxidized.

Chemical changes can occur over multiple steps.
