tions provide some 18,000 berths that are

complemented by facilities and services for

docking boats and ensuring crew members

enjoy their stay.

It is practically impossible to think of

any sports or sea-related activities, be it

dinghy sailing, cruise sailing, motorboating

or scuba diving, that are not accommodated

on the Valencian coasts. Services and compa-

nies devoted to nautical activities guarantee

long its nearly 600 kilometres of coas-

tline the Region of Valencia boasts ideal

conditions for lovers of nautical and un-

derwater activities, whether for sport or

leisure. In addition to its mild climate, with

ideal winds for sailing, the area offers a varied

landscape, clear waters, open beaches, remote

coves, infrastructures, fast accesses and the

best services required for all types of water

activities. Without a doubt, the rich variety

that the sea will be enjoyed regardless of the

activity chosen.

Sailing and motorboating courses are just

some of the activities on offer, and visitors

can hire the services and materials required

for carrying out all kinds of nautical activities.

The most remote places on the coast can be

discovered from the sea: the majestic walls

of Sierra de Irta and the Peñón de Ifach, the

secluded coves of Granadella and Bassetes,

and caves such as those of Las Conchas and

Los Pa lomos on the Costa B lanca.

of activities on offer illustrates the diversity

of the Region of Valencia’s coastal orography,

to the extent that it is hard to find a coastal

enclave that is not fascinating to sail along or

dive into to discover the treasures hidden in

its depths.

The marinas, from Vinaròs to Pilar de

la Horadada, mark out the profile of the

Mediterranean from north to south with a

complete range of services. Boosted by the

The Region of Valencia has a good

number of enclaves that stand out for their

unusual orography, particularly relaxing areas

away from the crowds and protected areas

where divers can enjoy the underwater world,

not forgetting the caves with small freshwater

rivers and breathtaking submerged mountains

that nature has modelled in the depths of the

sea. The depths of Cabo de San Antonio, the

islands of Tabarca, Portichol and Descubridor,

Cova Tallada and Cala Granadella, on the

Costa Blanca; Sierra Helada, L´Illa and La

Llosa in Benidorm; Peña del Moro in the

town of Cullera, the Islas Columbretes natural

reserve and the depths of Sierra de Irta, on

the Costa Azahar, are just some of the trea-

sures scuba divers will encounter in the Re-

gion of Valencia. It is a real paradise for

divers, who are only asked to comply with

regulations relating to the area’s conservation.

Constantly open to the sea, the Region

of Valencia is now, as always, open to the

Mediterranean, a fact that is recognised by

amateurs and professionals alike. It is, after

all, one of the best destinations for enjoying

activities where the sea plays a central role.

Throughout the year, a significant number of

the most varied sporting competitions take

place in the Mediterranean waters of the

Valencian coast, from dinghy sailing in all its

disciplines to jet skiing, motorboating and

cruise sailing. They are often international

competitions or races that count towards the

championship on the official regattas, attrac-

ting the world’s sailing and motorboating

elite. For their part, the Region of Valencia’s

marine resorts provide the means for tourists

and water sports enthusiasts to enjoy nautical

holidays in an exceptional environment,

combining accommodation with water

activities and tourism services.

The range of services meets the most

varied requirements, from those of an enthusiast

who simply wishes to enjoy a walk or weekend

sailing trip, to those of a regatta professional.

Page 8: Nautical Guide

6

From the occasional visitor to the pro-

fessional sportsperson, all requests can be

perfectly fulfilled, and all budgets catered

for. What’s more, this in an area that boasts

ideal weather conditions for sailing during

most of the year.

In this guide you will find a compre-

hensive list of marinas and yacht clubs, com-

panies dedicated to marine charters and ding-

hy sailing, schools and firms offering a range

of water sports, diving centres and rental

outlets. For your own safety, and in accor-

dance with current regulations, all diving

centres and sailing schools included in this

guide have been officially approved by the

Maritime Development Centre and Sailing

Federation, and are run by qualified instruc-

tors.

Moreover, boats that belong to companies

offering marine charters or cruiser rentals

have been registered on the Lista Sexta, in

compliance with legislation regulating their

activities. During the holiday season, services

are increased with temporary concessions

that are not included on the list but can be

viewed in the tourism office of each town.

And, in addition to what has already been

mentioned, a particularly significant factor:

the waters, weather conditions and general

infrastructures of the Region of Valencia

make up a whole where special importance

is given to exceptional safety conditions for

sailing and scuba-diving activities in all their

disciplines, always relying on the responsibi-

lity of those undertaking the activity, whether

above or below the waters of this area of the

Mediterranean that boasts the best winds.

Soft winds that are ideal for beginners,

pleasant for sailing and perfect for competing

in the setting of the calm, beautiful Mare

Nostrum. In a region where towns, villages

and landscapes compete in beauty with the

sea that bathes them.

n 2007, the Region of Valencia will be

attracting the attention of millions of people

around the world as the city of Valencia hosts the

32nd America’s Cup. Finally, this competition is

returning to Europe after 152 years.

Of all the sporting events held around the

world, this is the oldest and its media coverage

can only be compared to that of the Olympic

Games. A competition in which precision,

technological development and strategy are

determining factors, making this a highly

prestigious historical milestone both for theholders of the title and their rivals. The organisers consider that Valencia has thebest conditions as regards both wind and sea,and they also value it as a dynamic city whichoffers the necessary infrastructure required tohold this nautical event of worldwide mediainterest.

Hosting this nautical event has beenValencia’s chance to open up to the sea onceand for all, thus responding to a historic demandthat enables it to recover the virtues theMediterranean brings to the city’s urbandevelopment.

It was originally called the 100 Guinea’s

Cup. However, after the victory of the yacht

America in 1851, it became known as the

America’s Cup in 1870. Up until 1983, when the

Australian yacht, Australia II, won the trophy, the

competition had always been won by American

vessels. The Louis Vuitton Cup was created in the

same year as a pre-competition to decide the

vessel to challenge the trophy holder.

In the 2003 competition, which was held

in Auckland, New Zealand, a European vessel

–the Swiss yacht Alinghi – won the America’sCup after 152 years of American reign. As thewinner, Switzerland would be responsible fororganising the next competition in 2007.However, the Deed of Gift, the competition’sofficial rules, state that the America’s Cup musttake place in salt water. Valencia was named asthe host city from amongst 56 fierce contenders, including Barcelona, Naples, Marseille, Palmade Majorca and Lisbon.

The competition programme in Valenciahas already begun with the celebration of theLouis Vuitton Acts 2, 3, 4 & 5 in 2004 and 2005.During 2006, Acts 10, 11 & 12 will be held.

The final stage will be contended in thewaters off Valencia in 2007 when the final act,Act 14, will take place. This will give way tothe long-awaited Louis Vuitton Cup followed inJune by the America’s Cup, when the Alinghiwill have to fight to defend its title.

Hosting the event in the Region of Valenciais an unbeatable opportunity for promoting theart of navigation in our society. Such a task isreinforced by a number of factors including anexcellent climate, which is ideal for practisingwater sports with average annual temperatures

of over 17ºC, a strategic location and theimportant investment that is being made. Allthis will make the Valencian coastline the SportingMarina for Spaniards and Europeans alike. The America’s Cup challenge is already alive inall yacht clubs, sporting marinas, sailing schoolsand other facilities that are bathed by theMediterranean along the almost five hundredkilometres that make up the Region of Valencia’scoastline.

There is absolutely no doubt that theAmerica’s Cup will mark a turning point forValencia. The City and the entire Region ofValencia are putting their all into this event

which, alongside its important sporting element, represents a chance for Valencia to compete asa major city which is ready and willing to takeon the high-profile role it deserves as a focalpoint of cultures and values.

Dinghy Sailing

Page 74: Nautical Guide

n this guide, you will find the sailing centres

and schools that have been officially approved

by the Sailing Federation and the Valencian Re-

gional Government’s Maritime Development

Centre (indicated with the corresponding accre-

diting body’s emblem) and which have qualified

monitors. Most of these schools also hire out

equipment, from fast and fun catamarans to

windsurfing boards, for those who already know

something about nautical sports.

In addition to the officially approved

sailing schools, there are other sailing

centres that hire out the necessary equipment

for all kinds of dinghy sailing, windsurfing,

kitesurfing, etc.

The minimum age you can start sailing

is usually around 7 or 8. But there is no maximum

age limit, and once you are familiar with the

secrets of a board, a catamaran, or a small sail-

boat, sailing becomes an unforgettable experien-

ce. The schools and centres in the Region of

Valencia cater for all levels, from “sea baptisms”

to advanced classes and even regatta tactics.

Once you have the main sailing skills

under control, these same schools and centres

hire out boats so you can practice and check

your progress. Sailing is an activity where you

are surrounded by the natural elements and you

depend solely on your skills, your ability to feel

the wind and to manoeuvre the boat accordingly.

It also helps to have the Gods on your side:

Neptune, the God of the Sea, and Aeolus, the

God of the Wind.

ometimes what is most valuable cannot

be seen. The depths of the Mediterranean

are in no way inferior to the spectacular sight

offered above water. Quite the contrary, outs-

tanding sights include caves with freshwater

rivers running through them, large areas

of vegetation, islands, remote corners and

breathtaking underwater mountains that

scuba diving enthusiasts will discover in the

Region of Valencia.

Practically all year round, Valencia’s

unusual orography and climate are perfect for

scuba diving in transparent waters that present

an underwater paradise home to some of the

most beautiful marine species of Mediterranean

flora and fauna.

The breathtaking sights in the depths of

the Cabo de San Antonio marine reserve,

islands of Tabarca, l´Illa and Llosa de Be-

nidorm and Columbretes nature reserve,

to mention but a few, need not be seen only in

pictures. The best way to discover them is by

visiting a centre specialising in underwater acti-

vities.

The first contact with scuba diving should

always be made with a qualified instructor who

will accompany the student on his or her first

experience with weightlessness. The centres

found in the Region of Valencia offer courses at

all levels and even night dives. They also provide

the proper equipment to ensure no risks are

taken during dives.

It is important to keep in mind that un-

derwater activities are subject to strict regulations

that must be followed. In this guide you will

find information on each of the officially appro-

ved scuba-diving centres that are registered in

the Maritime Development Centre of the

Autonomous Government of Valencia, in

compliance with current leg islation.

These centres are not only officially en-

dorsed; they are recognised globally by the

competent authorities that regulate underwater

activities, organise courses and provide the

necessary qualifications:

" The Region of Valencia Federation of

Underwater Activities (FASCV), belonging to

the Spanish Federation of Underwater Activi-

ties (FEDAS) and the Confederatión Mondiale

des Activités Subacuatiques (CMAS)
