    updates on measles and

    learn more about what we

    are doing here in South

    Carolina to stay ahead of

    the situation.

    Measles is transmitted by

    contact with an infected

    person through coughing

    and sneezing. The measles

    virus may also remain in-

    fectious for up to two

    hours in the airspace after

    an infected person leaves

    an enclosed area. Severe com-

    plications can occur with

    measles, including pneumo-

    nia, encephalitis, and even

    death.

    The Measles, Mumps and

Rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best way to protect your

    child and your family from

    measles and prevent potential

    outbreaks. The MMR vaccine

    is recommended for all in-

fants at 12 months of age and

is a requirement to attend day

care or school in South Caro-

    talk to your healthcare provid-

er if your child has not yet

received the vaccine. Sincerely, Linda J. Bell, M.D. State Epidemiologist

    By now you have likely

    California. The Centers for

cases so far this year in

    multiple states, most of

them stemming from the Disneyland outbreak that

    began in late December

    2014. The vast majority of

    these cases occurred

    among people who had not

    been vaccinated.

    Here in South Carolina, we

    are fortunate that no cases

    of measles have been re-

Reminder about parking Reminder about parking Reminder about parking Reminder about parking & afternoon dismissal& afternoon dismissal& afternoon dismissal& afternoon dismissal We have had several parents express concern over being una-ble to navigate through the park-ing lot or back out of parking spaces due to cars being parked along the curb. When picking up students from the car line, we ask that you please drive through the car line if at all pos-sible. When you must park to pick up, please park your vehi-cle in an appropriate parking space, not along the curb.

Remember that it is unlawful to park in a handicapped space unless you have a handicapped license plate or mirror hanger. Please make every effort not to block access to these spaces.

We appreciate your help in mak-

    ing our afternoon dismissals run

    smoothly.

    From: Claire Thompson, Principal

Re: Nominations for School Improvement Council

Every school in South Carolina is required by the Education Improvement Act to have a School Improvement Council. The council serves as an advisory committee to the principal and assists with establishing and implementing goals for the school. The council also helps establish priorities for the capital expenditures budget, the incentive budget and the operational budg-et for the school. At various times, SIC members are asked to represent the school on district committees. The School Im-provement Council is composed of elected and appointed teachers, parents, and community members.

Our current council consists of the following elected parents from our school.

Rotating off the council this year:

    Robby Aull

    Michael Sechrest

The following parents will serve their second year during 2015-2016 school year:

    Jonathan Garris

    Jo Anne Hill

    Lynn McFarland

    Fran Ricks

Each year parents elect their representatives to serve on the council. The two people elected will begin their term of service in the 2015-2016 school year and will rotate off the council at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

Before submitting a nomination, we request that you ask the person for permission to submit his/her name. It is important that those nominated be willing to serve as a representative for the school. If you are interested in running, please nominate yourself. Elected parents should have a child who will be at Lake Murray Elementary for the length of time of their service on the council.
