Responses to questions submitted at the December 3meeting were presented

Pablo Hernandez presented an update on the project status

Responses to the questions submitted on March 4 follow

What will happen to the ‘s-turns’ road?_________________________________

Current plans show this area cross hatched which means the roadway will be removed

The plans also show the turnaround that we will install at the north end of the Mirlo Beach subdivision

7

Page 8: N.C. 12 Rodanthe Bridge

What are plans to ease traffic on N.C. 12 during the high visitor season?_________________________________

Construction activities during high visitor season will be restricted – no daytime lane closures between June 15 and September 15 –

After September 15, there are no lane closures Friday afternoon to Sunday night

Impact should be minimal

8

Page 9: N.C. 12 Rodanthe Bridge

Are lane closures anticipated in the spring as earthwork / paving resume?

_________________________________

With paving ongoing at north end, no affect to travel on N.C. 12

New roadway contractor is working on plans for south end where there could be more involvement with N.C. 12 traffic but because of

the newness of the contractor (to the project), we are giving them time for getting a plan together

Page 10: N.C. 12 Rodanthe Bridge

Will there be a fishing area on the bridge?_________________________________

There are no plans for fishing access on this structure

_____________________________________________

How many miles of N.C. 12 does the bridge abate?_________________________________

About 2.8 miles will be bypassed

10

Page 11: N.C. 12 Rodanthe Bridge

What is the average clearance under the bridge at the highest point?

_________________________________

Approximately 17’ – 4” from Water line to bottom of bridge

Bridge will not be high rise or ‘humpback’ like Currituck Sound or Oregon Inlet bridges

11

Page 12: N.C. 12 Rodanthe Bridge

When will the roundabout at the southern end be started and completed?

_________________________________

Constructing the roundabout now/early was considered.

However, maintaining traffic on N.C.12 in existing alignment from the Liberty Gas Station to the S-curves during construction due to bridge not being completed would cause issues with traffic backups during

the high-volume timeframe

12

Page 13: N.C. 12 Rodanthe Bridge

13

Is there a bike lane on the bridge?_________________________________

No dedicated bike lanes on the bridge

8’ wide shoulders like on Oregon Inlet Bridge – on both sides

All paved areas associated with project will have 4-8’ paved shoulders like the remainder of N.C.12 down to Hatteras

Page 14: N.C. 12 Rodanthe Bridge

What are you doing to prevent ocean over wash into Milo Beach after the road is removed?

Are you installing some protection going east to west to protect what has become a traditional wash out area?

_________________________________

At the end of the Mirlo Beach subdivision, along a portion of remnant N.C. 12, sandbags in the dune south of the refuge boundary will remain

Sandbags will be installed and a new dune running east west will be built at the end of the N.C. 12 remnant

One of the challenges along N.C.12 is over wash from many different points. The Department will do our best to maintain drivable access

on the remnant14

Pile driving on the northern portion of the project still has its challenges. (north & south end separated by ~ 2,600ft)

Current technique to help ease the pile installation, (augering the soil inside the cylinder pile),

has shown positive results with pile installation

At this time anticipate pile driving could be complete in early September 2021

At this time, the two work trestles are not planned to meet

The north work trestle will be first to be removed while the southern work trestle continues toward the north to

complete the bridge

The trestle components, gantries & cranes will be dismantled and trucked off the bridge

Phase 1 of CHEC’s transmission line relocation at the north end of the bridge is underway

The riser poles and other adjustments have been madeUnderground bore should begin later in June.

At the south end of the bridge CHEC has completed phase 1 for relocating the transmission lines (U/G bore & riser poles)

Resuming roadway work at the south end of the project has not been determined yet
