UPCOMING HAMFESTS

If you know of any hamfest that should be

listed and is not, please let me know so it can be included in the next edition.

Hamfests need your support and attendance to survive!

The President’s Corner

We are just weeks away from the next MOCARS event – the Moore County Fair.

Aside from meeting members of the community and having a chance to promote

ham radio, we get the opportunity to eat all that good (junk) food that is a trademark of

every American county fair. Just think -- Fried dough, funnel cakes, endless strings of

fried potatoes, candy apples, cotton candy, hot dogs, hamburgers and bbq are available

as long as you have the money and the ap-petite. So, we all get to gain a few pounds and have fun doing it. Actually, I think it is

our reward for all the other things MOCARS has done this year.

Speaking of things done, I would like to

commend Lionel Bryson, Jim Brock, Jim Johnson, and Raymond and Belle Arnold

(among others) for the commendable work they have done in assisting the estate of Milt

Saxman in disposing of a huge supply of radio equipment. Quite a few of us have

benefited from the sale(s) and those sales represent a lot of work by the individuals

involved. This represents the best side of the hobby. Thanks to all involved!

Aside from the county fair later this month, we still have the Pinehurst Triathlon and the

SET to look forward to. I am certain we will hear plans for all of these things at the Au-

gust meeting.

See you at Thursdays meeting and at Pete’s

for dinner prior to the meeting.

Saxman, recently became a silent key.

His daughter asked MOCARS to help dispose of his extensive accumulation of

equipment. A portion was brought to the club meeting for disposal and sold to members through a silent auction. The

rest will be inventoried by MOCARS for future disposal.

Perseid Meteor Shower

The Perseid meteor shower, the best annual shower for Amateur Radio meteor-scatter

work, peaks overnight August 12. Unfortu-nately for viewing purposes, peak activity will happen during daylight hours across North

America. Space.com advises stargazers with clear skies to seek out the meteor display

during the pre-dawn hours of August 12 and 13, when the absence of bright moonlight will boost your chances of spotting a meteor — or

bouncing a radio signal off meteor trails. The peak should occur between 1815 and

2045 UTC, with an expected peak (zenith hourly rate) of 100 per hour. Meteor-scatter communication uses the ionized trail of a me-

teor as a passive reflector for VHF and UHF signals — 6 and 2 meters are excellent bands

— and a simple but effective station is within the reach of most amateur experimenters.

Most meteor scatter enthusiasts employ soft-ware such as WSJT, developed by Joe Taylor,

K1JT, for meteor-scatter communication. The software can decode fraction-of-a-second sig-

nals reflected from ionized meteor trails. Visit the WSJT website to learn more and to download a copy.

For another approach, APRS enthusiasts may

want to check out the APRS Meteor Scatter Email System webpage.
