A Note from the Principal

May Newsletter – Principal Corner

Spring at last!

As I sit at my desk, the sun streams through the windows of the Pavilion and the students bask in

its warmth. Finally, the vice-like grip of the rainy, winter gloom subsides and we rejoice at the pro-

spects of a gorgeous, summer in the Puget Sound.

The change in the physical seasons foreshadows the changes in the seasons of life. Each solstice

reminds us that change is in the offing and that for good or ill, the winds of change will bring some-

thing new.

And so it is with raising our children. The seasons of life change for them, too, along with the vacil-lating winds of culture and peers. While we as parents acknowledge the passing of time in our lives, the changes are a bit slower and we may miss a few of the opportunities that present them-selves for parenting our young people, in the whirlwind of soccer games, homework, and the latest fashion trends.

Continued on next page ...

One opportunity we must not miss, however, is the chance to talk with our kids about the current

trends in popular media, be they found in TV, social media, or latest YouTube sensation. (Later in

this newsletter, Mrs. Herman has posted a link that may help us keep attuned to some of these

shifts.)

In particular, I wish to draw your attention to a Netflix original program that has captured the atten-

tion of many young people, including our own at NCA. Called, Thirteen Reasons Why, it is a story

about a high school sophomore who commits suicide and then leaves cassette tapes for her

friends to explain their various offenses against her. The show portrays teens as snarky and world-

ly-wise, complaining as much about the ineptness of adults as they do about each other. Parents

and school staff are portrayed as well intentioned but clueless about life in general, and their kids

in particular. According to Plugged In (a Christian media review website) after episodes depicting

violent sexual behavior, the heroine Hannah Baker, graphically kills herself.

Another, even more harmful media influence is an app called, Blue Whale. Do not download it. The app purportedly asks players to fulfill certain self-harming tasks over 50 days, culminating in com-mitting suicide. The following link tells more http://wfla.com/2017/05/10/schools-warning-parents-of-blue-whale-app-self-harm-game/ . While these are not the stuff of warm feelings and good vibrations of spring and summer, they are

a part of a season of this life, the season of helping our children navigate the world and the chal-

lenges of Satan, the enemy of our souls. Thankfully our Lord, (though He too bears the scars of

our sin) has promised us that He will have the ultimate victory!

Jesus will help you through the seasons of life, including the seasons of digital parenting!

Bible and Discipleship Classes

It has been an incredible year watching the 8th graders grow in their understanding of God’s purpose for their lives! They had the privilege of learning about God’s covenant with us through Jesus Christ and are now getting a chance to delve into the book of James. I count myself blessed to have been a part of their journey towards Christlikeness and will continue to pray for their continued development into Christian leaders!

In His Grip,

Mr. David McLain

High School Prep Writing is designed to revisit and build upon the writing concepts that students

have already been exposed to in their English classes. Creative writing assignments are bal-

anced with structured essays so students can practice incorporating 6 key writing traits: voice,

organization, ideas, conventions, excellent word choice and sentence fluency. Students write

every class session, whether it be writing prompts, short stories, timed essays or planned es-

says.

This year, the students have brainstormed, written and revised essays including informa-

tive, descriptive and compare/contrast in response to two short stories. We read lots of sample

writing pieces in class, both good and not-so-good examples. Students found the tables turned

when they became the instructors during a unit called “Comma College, teaching and presenting

the rules of comma usage to their classmates. A highlight of third quarter were “Paper Bag” sto-

ries. Following a unit on writing and punctuating dialogue, students wrote a short story based on

characters, settings and plot suggestions they drew from paper bags.

Our class motto is “Everyone tries; everyone improves.” My goal is to see the students be-come more confident in their writing abilities and that their foundation of mechanics, organization

and use of words will be strengthened.

Elective Class Highlight!

NCA has a strict policy on technology use for

students on campus and in the classrooms. The use

of any social media site is not permitted while

students are on campus, before school or after

school. Any technology use is strictly for academic

purposes in the classroom. However, we encourage

parents to have a hands on approach to their

student’s technology and media use outside of school

by having open and honest conversations about how

they are using the internet and what they are finding.

Students should understand that what they say and

do online can have lasting effects. We hope to

encourage and support students and parents as they

navigate this newer form of communication.

Please check out the video posted on this page from

Common Sense Media discussing the importance of

having these conversations with your students.
