ABOUT THE COLLEGECentral Johannesburg Colleges was born in September 2003, following the official declarationof Technical Colleges into Further Education and Training Colleges, by the then Minister of Education, Professor Kader Asmal. This declaration followed because of a national strategy to restructure the educational landscape of South Africa and to provide improved access to amore diverse learner population. It is the ultimate aim to create a FET sector that will directlyimpact on the transformation of the society in terms of relevant education that will upliftthe economy through active entrepreneurial training and the preparation of learners for theworld of work.

Stability, growth and unity are the key concepts behind our corporate brand. The image of theCJC logo reflects a dynamic, UNIFIED and responsive culture. The shield represents our academic traditions and symbolizes protection, strength and stability. The four parts of the flame represents the four merged colleges unified in a single flame of enlightenment andleadership. The flame signifies leadership and guidance, illuminating and enlightening thelearners. The sun, the true symbol of South Africa, symbolizes hope, growth, life and warmth.The national palette represents diversity and unity through colour. Our logo unites the fourcolleges under a single image and lights the dawn to a new promising success, growth,quality, prosperity and excellence.

OVERVIEW OF THE NC(V) QUALIFICATION

The new curriculum is offered in the following ten learning areas (sub-fieds):

C. UNDER THE SCHOOL OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES• Tourism• Hospitality

D. UNDER THE SCHOOL OF INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT)• Information Technology & Computer Science

The introduction of the NC(V) results in the phasing out of Nated qualifications.This phasing-in and phasing-out is being done in the following manner:

Each NQF level is offered as a ONE YEAR qualification, i.e. January to December.

Each NC(V) qualification has a total of SEVEN SUBJECTS per NQF level. THREE of the seven subjects are called FUNDAMENTAL SUBJECTS, i.e. they are common for all learning areas(sub-fields) and are also COMPULSORY. The three fundamental subjects are:

1. Life Orientation2. Language/Communication3. Maths (ET & ICT students) or Maths Literacy (EDB & HHS Students)

The purpose of the fundamental subjects is to provide a foundation upon which to build the vocational subjects. Each student must enroll for FOUR VOCATIONAL SUBJECTS in eachlearning area. The four vocational subjects are compulsory and in some cases, a student willchoose a fourth vocational subject from a few optional subjects.

• To enroll for any of the NC(V) qualifications at NQF Level 2, a prospective student: – must have a Grade 9 pass or a higher qualification; OR - must have an NQF Level 1 qualification; OR – must have an approved bridging programme designed for the specific purpose to access NQF Level 2; OR – go through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment to meet the basic requirements for access to NQF Level 2• To enroll for NQF Level 3, a student must have completed a relevant NQF Level 2.

• You must pass all SEVEN subjects to obtain the NC(V) qualification at a particular level and to progress to the next NQF Level.• The pass requirement for the four vocation subjects is 50% per subject• The pass requirement for the fundamental subjects is as follows:

– Life Orientation 40% – Language/Communication 40% – Maths/Maths Literacy 30%

Only ONE fundamental subject may be condoned for a maximum of 5%:

Please remember that this a year qualification and should you fail, you may be required torepeat the course or write supplementary exam.

The final pass mark is compiled from an Internal Assessment mark and an ExternalExamination mark. Internal Assessment is continuous throughout the year and ExternalExamination is written during November of each year.

Internal Assessment is comprised of Formative and Summative Assessments.Summative Assessment includes class tests, standardized tests and performance tasks.Formative Assessment includes class work, assignments, research projects, etc. BothFormative and Summative Assessment work results in a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE). This PoE is crucial as the Internal Assessment counts as follows towards the final pass mark:

Fundamental Subjects 25% of the final markVocational Subjects 50% of the final mark

The examination is external as the Directorate Examinations & Assessment sets theexamination nationally. This means that all students write the same examination paperon the same day for a particular subject. This sets national standards for assessmentand achievement. The external examination counts as follows towards the final pass mark:

Fundamental Subjects 75% of the final markVocational Subjects 50% of the final mark

NC(V) QUALIFICATION

You should not be late or absent for any of your classes. Anacceptable explanation must be given to your Lecturer as soon as possible as to why you were late or absent. If you arrive late, you are expected to apologize and take your seat quietly without disrupting the class. Action will be taken if:

›You are absent for unacceptable reasons for more than 20% of any term›You are absent for more than three days at once;›Your attendance shows a pattern of decline;›Your absences show a pattern, e.g. Every Monday morning;›Your regularly arrive late without good reason.

If your attendance and/or punctuality provide cause for concern you will have to follow one of the courses of action outlined below:

1. You and your Lecturer will have a discussion where you will set goals and create an action plan to help you attend more regularly and punctually;2. Your Student Support Officer will make contact with you to discuss what help you need to improve your attendance and punctuality;3. If you still fail to meet the required standards of attendance and punctuality then the College may take disciplinary action.
