DearMarla:Shoes, shoes, everywhere shoes! That’smy life! To make mattersworse, I have large feet, which means my shoesare larger than Cinderel-la’s glass slipper and takeupmore roomthanyoucanimagine.
Then there are my kids’shoes, which seem to beeverywhere. What’s thebest way to organize yourshoes?
—Mother of 2,Marco Island
Dear mother of 2: Con-gratulations, you have justasked the proverbial or-
ganizing question! It’s mypleasure to give you somefood for thought.
I’m assuming you don’thave a custom-built closetsystem in place; so for thesake of today’s column,I’m going to list a varietyof solutions for people likeyou andmewhohave a fairamount of shoes but nodesignated place to storethem.
Several of the followingorganizing systems comeinmultiples of six, 12 or 24,
each of which, dependingupon the size of your shoeand heel height, will holdone pair of shoes or oneshoe.Shoe cubbies: For me,
this is the best way tomaximize the underuti-lized space in all of ourclosets— the area beneathwhere your clothes hang.My favorite is the 12- or15-pair shoe organizer, which can be lined up,one next to another,or stacked, up to threeunits high. (Note: eachcubby measures about11.5 inches by 4.5 inches by6.5 inches.)Six-pocket or 10-pocket
hanging canvas shoe hold-ers: These cloth closetorganizers hang over theclothing rods in your clos-et and are, in my opinion,
major space hogs, takingaway valuable hangingspace. Also, although theyare washable, they tend toget very dusty and smellyin a short time.Behind-the-door, vinyl
or cloth hanging shoe hold-er: As long as you have astandard residential doorin your closet and not apocket or bifold door, themultiple pockets are greatfor storing everythingfrom craft supplies toshoes. Avoid putting pat-ent leather shoes in thevinyl pockets.
With the shoe cubby,behind-the-door or over-the-door organizing sys-tems, try to avoid the temp-tation to jammore thanonepair of shoes into each cub-by, pocket or shelf. It’s noteasy, but over time it does
help save your shoes fromexcessive wear and tear.Over-the-door metal
shoe racks: Again, if yourcloset has a standardresidential door, this willwork, but remember, onceyou hang your shoes onthemetal holders, the rackwill be wide and cumber-some.Multitier stackable racks:
These are ideal for storingsneakers in your garage, but sincemost of these arecomposed of slatted woodshelving, it’s difficult tostore high-heeled shoes.Plus, because the shelvingis essentially “open,” anydirt on the bottom of yourshoes eventually will landon the floor.Under-the-bed shoe
n How to successfully stash your shoes in a usable way

if you choose to keep your shoes in the original boxes they came in, take a photo to tape orglue to the outside of the box for easy access and identification. labeling each box also works, but taking a photo is faster and easier.
to use the “dead” space beneath your clothes and keep shoes organized, shoe cubbies, such asthis one, can be stacked on top of one another or lined up in a neat row.

Kitchens and baths are the mostremodeled and detailed rooms in thehome. We spend an awful lot of timein both rooms, and the desire to fit thewaywe live drives trends, product in-novationsand thedesignwhenremod-eling or building a new home.
“Take into consideration how longyou and your family plan on living inthe home. If it is for 10 or more years, plan the space specifically for yourneeds and behavior patterns. Thekitchen and bath are what bring inthe most bang for your buck,” saidL. Maxine Corbett, co-owner andprincipal interior designer for Rich-lin International at Miromar DesignCenter.
Corbett sees several bath trends:n coolingmedicine cabinets, which
refrigerate items such asmedicationsand organic skin products;
n showers that allow homeownersto create a spalike atmosphere in theirhomeswith digital platforms towrapwater, sound, light andsteamtogether;and
n bathtubs with built-in stereosystems where sound is broadcastthrough the tub walls.

HARTFORD, Conn. — LisaTonnerwas living in FairfieldCounty, Conn., and knew nothing about paganismwhen, in the late 1980s, she accepted an invitationto go to the city.
“My friend said, ‘Do youwant to go to NewYork? We’re going to a magic shop’,” she recalled. “And Ithought, magic, like pulling rabbits out of a hat.”
As it turned out, they were going to theMagickalChilde, a popular Manhattan store for the Pagancommunity.
“I thoughtwizards andwitcheswere the stuff from‘Lord of the Rings’ and movies and fantasy books, and I walked in, I took a look around, and … (I said)this stuff is real. And I was immediately fascinatedand I startedbuyingbooks and teachingmyself,” saidTonner, who grewup in an Episcopalian familywhodidn’t go to church.
She saw a notice for the Fairfield CountyWitchesNetwork and got involved.
“That actually became the Connecticut Wiccanand Pagan Network,” she said. As network vicepresident, Tonner, who now lives in the Hartfordarea, is preparing for this weekend’s celebrationof the summer solstice. (In South Florida, a Sum-mer Solstice festival is planned at LakeOkeechobeeResort and Marina through Sunday; information:indigocrescent.com.)
