Garden Club Celebrates Seven Decades

The Dade City Garden Club blossomed into an official organization 70 years ago on May 9.

Through the years, the club has gained the reputation as a civic organization within Dade City by working with the Pioneer Museum; creating an annual city historic ornament; and working with students through gardening and nature projects, to name a few items on their busy calendar. The club has worked to help the community explore nature and learn more of gardening, horticulture and environmental awareness.

Jamari Deshay Gardner, 19, of 14644 10th St., was arrested by Dade City police on May 9 on a charge of corrup-tion by threat against a public servant or family. Contact was made with Gardner around mid-night regarding a do-

mestic battery. Upon arrival officers re-portedly discovered the residence to be heavily damaged from Gardner losing his temper. After being separated from his girlfriend, Gardner reportedly told offi-cers he wasn’t afraid to go to jail and that he had a 9 mm handgun. When the girl-friend stepped outside the apartment in attempt to leave the scene, with the assist of officers, Gardner reportedly moved to-ward her in an aggressive manner to make contact. Once detained, Gardner re-portedly said, “I’m gonna catch your ass out on the flipside.” The officer believed Gardner wished to do him harm in a vio-lent way because he did not like the situ-ation he was in. Gardner was arrested and taken to the Pasco County Jail.

Charlene Kay Brozik, 56, of Webster, was arrested by Dade City police on May 5 on a charge of retail theft. Brozik was reportedly witnessed concealing three music CDs and a bag of coffee into her purse while at Walmart, 12650 U.S. 301. Brozik paid for miscellaneous items while at checkout then exited the store without proper payment for the concealed items. Post Miranda, Brozik stated she did not have enough money for the items. She was arrested, processed and released with a notice to appear in court.

A 15-year-old male was arrested by Dade City police on May 6 on charges of pos-session of paraphernalia and possession of marijuana – less than 20 grams. Con-tact was made with the defendant during a traffic stop when the officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from within the car. All occupants denied the presence of marijuana on their person or in the car. A search revealed a small bag-gy containing marijuana and a glass pipe containing marijuana residue in the back-seat center console, where the defendant

and another passenger were sitting. The defendant admitted the items were his.

Brady Christopher Odum, 20, of Brooksville, was arrested by Dade City police on May 7 on a charge of driv-ing while license suspended or revoked. Brady was pulled over for driving with a tag not assigned to that vehicle. Upon contact, Brady told the officer his license had been suspended. A records check confirmed the Jan. 29, 2015 suspension, and he was arrested and taken to the Pas-co County Jail.

Shenecika Phonshay Russell, 24, of 15109 Hillsborough Ave., was arrested by Dade City police on May 6 on four Pinellas Coun-ty warrants for failure to appear – one for pos-session of marijuana and three for driving

while license suspended or revoked. Con-tact was made with Russell at U.S. 301 and Morningside Drive when a records

check confirmed the active warrants. Russell was arrested and taken to the Pas-co County Jail upon confirmation of the warrants.

Kadie Lynn Watson, 24, of 39132 State Road 54, was arrested by Dade City po-lice on April 28 on a charge of schem-ing to defraud. As an employee, Wat-son reportedly took several items from Walmart, 12650 U.S. 301, on various dates and times ranging from March 16 through April 13. Watson reportedly took five packs of gum, a pack of diapers, three bottles of soda, eight bags of dif-ferent chips, a pack of ranch dip and one pack of noodles. Watson reportedly took some of the items then ate them while on break at the store without payment and was captured by video surveillance. Wat-son reportedly admitted to taking most of the items listed.

The information provided in the Dade City Police report is taken from public re-cord. All parties are considered innocent until proven guilty.

and north of Dade City. It was during this time that the two stopped at Judd’s Ridge Manor residence for an unknown reason and “she was able to obtain a knife … and concealed it from him,” Uppercue said.

Upon returning to Dade City, Judd managed to stab Bloom in the neck when they were in the Price Park area and she was able to escape. Bloom fled in the victim’s car.

Police were able to locate Judd near Pond Avenue after receiving an 8 a.m. call for help from the victim as she was walking near Eighth Street and Robinson Avenue.

Judd was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Bayfront Health for further treatment.

Police later stopped the victim’s car behind Heritage Park Apartments and arrested Bloom. He was also treated at Bayfront Health before being transferred to the Pasco County Jail.

Uppercue noted the two were “former boyfriend and girlfriend” who had previously lived together and may have a common child, so the incident is also considered an act of domestic violence.

Bloom has been charged with six felonies: domestic battery by strangulation, kidnap to commit or facilitate commission of a felony; false imprisonment of an adult; robbery (no weapon); robbery carjacking (no weapon); and burglary of an occupied conveyance with battery.

Charity Begins At County Tax Office

Since he was appointed to the role of Pasco County Tax Collector in 2013, Mike Fasano has been on a mission to give back.

He was chosen to fill the shoes of longtime tax col-lector Mike Olson, who passed away while in office, and although Olson left a great legacy, Fasano wanted to do more.

Almost immediately after taking office, Fasano started a program to benefit county charities and non-profit organizations.

During the monthly charity program’s 3 1/2 years, the tax collector’s five offices have amassed $275,000 for these organizations.

“I felt that our organization was not involved in the community at all and I’m a big believer that when you have an organization like the tax collector’s office you have such a great opportunity of … helping the community, especially our charity organizations here in Pasco County,”

Fasano said. The monthly donations are raised

through the county’s customers. The tax collector offices in Pasco average about 15,000 customers a week. Each time a customer goes into an office, the charity of the month is highlighted and donation buckets are set up at each service station.

Flyers are also mailed out from the tax collector with auto and boat renewal letters. Customers have an option to donate and add the amount into their renewal payment.

This month’s charitable organization is CARES (Community Aging & Retirement Services), which helps out low-income seniors and their pets. Donations can be made at any of the five tax collector locations in the county.

Fasano said the calendar is already full for the next year and a half, with another two dozen charities on the waiting list to be assigned a fundraising month. Although it is difficult choosing each charity, he makes a point to keep it within county.

“That’s key for me. We certainly want to help people who are in need … we want to do our best to see how is it going to help people in Pasco County,” the tax collector said.

Although his family was originally from New York, Fasano has been a Pasco resident since he was 13 when his family settled here in 1971. A Republican, Fasano’s political career began in 1994 when he was elected to represent the 45th District. He also served in the Florida Senate for ten years beginning in 2002.

“You can see the generosity of our customers,” Fasano said of the charity programs. “The government is always taking, so here is an opportunity to give back.”

April’s charity was NAMI, which received more than $5,800 from the fundraiser. Last year the offices focused on raising money for the Pasco Sheriff’s new K9 unit, and ended up raising $50,000 for the cause.

If you want to make a donation this month, contact Jemith Rosa at (727) 863-6868 or visit www.CARESFL.org for information about CARES and the Pet Project.

You can also visit www.pascotaxes.com for more information about the promotional and charitable giving programs at the tax collector’s office. The local location is located at the East Pasco Government Center, 14236 Sixth St., Room 100 in Dade City. This location is not open on Saturdays.

I met a guy more than a year ago when he stopped into my office to see if I could offer him any information on a project of his. He seemed pretty cool and we both had one thing in common: we both loved to talk.

One of the subjects that came up was Sunrise of Pasco, Inc. I told him I had many friends who worked there and mentioned I was the past Chairman of the Board of this awesome organization. He told me they have helped him in many ways and to this day they continue to encourage and offer positive reinforcement to him.

I got a text while I was in church this past Sunday morning. I don’t usually look at my phone during the service but decided to take a quick look while the praise team was leaving the stage during the contemporary worship service, and I am glad I did. It was from my friend, who shall remain anonymous. Here is what it said, “Today I am one year and FREE! Totally clean of alcohol, nicotine and drugs and I am only beginning! Carpe diem.”

What a great text to receive while in God’s house. I have been praying for this guy ever since he told me some of the things he was going through. The prayers couldn’t have been answered at a better time. The only thing I wasn’t sure of is what does, carpe diem mean? I did take

Latin when I was in high school but I wasn’t a very good student so I decided to Google it and here is what Dictionary.com says – “Latin. Seize the day; enjoy the present, as opposed to placing all hope in the future”. Now I get it. To me it means to take one day at a time.

My friend attends regular Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and I am guessing he has been following the 12-step plan. I am not going to go over all of these steps but joining AA is a big leap forward and is freely available. The only requirement to join is a desire to stop drinking. The program uses a spiritual approach that includes a belief in a higher power. Having a sponsor helps to understand the program and if you need them they are there to help keep you from drinking.

According to Recovery.org, one study found 67 percent of the people who attended at least 27 weeks of AA meetings during the first year of treatment remained abstinent in a 16-year follow up.

There are AA meeting locations in Zephyrhills and Dade City. To find a location near you go to www.aatampa-area.org/meetings/eastPasco.

They would love to welcome you and provide some much needed help.

You are not in this alone. To my friend, I am excited about the

great accomplishment you have made. You have been an inspiration to me. I am thankful our paths have crossed and I am excited to hear about the great things that have already begun to happen in a positive way because of your commitment. I will continue to pray for you and all those who are going through any type of addiction.

This is one of the many verses in God’s holy word that has helped me in all types of situations and it can help you, too. “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” – Mark 11:24 (NIV).

presented by Ethan Rampersuad, a Pasco High Cambridge student. It featured a slideshow of modern and historic photos of the club compiled by Madonna Wise. The video also featured interviews with Tom and Charles Touchton, descendants of club co-founder Thelma Touchton.

Touchton founded the Garden Club with Thelma Gilbert in 1947, and the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs accepted it in 1948. They held their first flower show in March 1949.

The Garden Club’s historical building is the original 1914 St. Rita Church, which was relocated to the current Garden Club site.

The club’s house is a popular rental event center for weddings, family celebrations and community activities.

At Monday’s anniversary celebration, Mayor Camille Hernandez presented the club with a Proclamation honoring the 70th Anniversary. Hernandez acknowledged the garden club’s annual Arbor Day events and its partnership with the city resulting in the designation of Dade City as a “Tree City USA”.

“Her Proclamation was a wonderful

tribute to the community accomplishments of the Garden Club,” Redden said.

In addition to the party, business was also handled as the 2017-2018 officers were installed, including: Debbie Parks, president; Peggy Woods, first vice president; Joy Dew, second vice

president; Dee Scheidker, secretary; Kathy Riley, treasurer; and Carol West, assistant treasurer.

The Garden Club has more than two acres of botanical gardens and the public is invited to stroll through and enjoy them.

“Take pictures and only leave footprints,” Redden said.

Visit the Garden Club website to review their calendar for scheduled events, pictures of the gardens and rental information.

FHZ Introduces New Birthing Option Florida Hospital Zephyrhills has

introduced ProNox, a new pain management technology for women in labor that offers a middle ground between an epidural anesthesia and natural childbirth.

“When a woman feels a contraction coming, she can breathe through her ProNox mask and remove the mask when she wants, thereby controlling the amount of gas or pain control she’s receiving,” according to Dr. Marian A. Sampson, a board certified gynecologist and obstetrician with East Pasco Women’s Care.

“The childbirth experience is an extremely physical and emotional event, so effectively managing pain and anxiety is important. ProNox can interrupt the fear-pain cycle and provide patients with a pleasant

delivery,” Sampson said. “ProNox also allows mom to get up out of bed and walk around after childbirth, which is not usually possible with an epidural and narcotics, both of which can leave one feeling drugged and sleepy.”

With ProNox, the patient breathes a 50/50 blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen. There is a rapid onset that brings quick pain relief but it’s also swiftly eliminated from mom and baby. ProNox is safe, effective, inexpensive and non-invasive. It’s also great for patients who dislike needles, Sampson added.

Expecting mothers who want to know more about ProNox can talk to their obstetrician or call (813) 783-6124 and ask to speak with Jennifer Powers, RN, FHZ Nurse Educator at The Baby Place.

the 13 branches were assigned a color for matching family tree shirts, so guests could tell which branch others descended from. The only Gude who did not have surviving family was Theresa, who was a nun and had no descendants.

Of the 13, only four remain alive today: Alice, Eddie, Val and Ronnie.

The reunion served as a 90th birthday celebration for Alice (Gude) Orlowicz, who will approach her ninth decade on June 25. Two of her daughters, Cathe Morrow and Mary Bashore, thought of the reunion when considering birthday ideas for their mother. They had been planning and tracking down family members for a year and a half.

“Everybody was so friendly and so cordial and so excited to be there,” Morrow said.

The four remaining original Gudes currently reside in the Dade City area, but relatives travelled from as far as Nevada, Texas and New Hampshire, to name a few.

“It took a lot of research,” Bashore said with a laugh. “Thank God for Facebook.” She and her sister started with the basics, going through their mother’s address book. After that, they took to social media, creating a private event for the party that slowly began to build up members.

“One of our oldest cousins I actually sent five different addresses handwritten invitations to because no one knew where he lived,” Bashore said.

“We did locate the vast majority,” Morrow said.

All in all about 175 family members were able to attend, exceeding organizers’ expectations. Morrow and Bashore coordinated with their cousin Lucille Adams, a descendant of one of the 13,

who lives on the Gude family property located on Con Gude Road. The property was divided between the males of the 13, and several family members reside on different parts of the land.

The party was held under a pole barn type structure, which was originally a chicken coop from back in the day. Different barbecued meats were catered and local relatives provided side dishes and desserts. Despite the torrential downpour, the party lasted from 1 p.m. until about 6 p.m., with the younger ones playing in the rain all afternoon.

“All of the grandchildren and great grandchildren got to see the property where it all started,” Bashore said. “It was

amazing. We all met people we had never met before.”

A slideshow of pictures old and new was displayed after everyone ate.

“That seemed to really hit everybody,” Bashore said. “It had photos of things people had never scene – a lot of memories there and just trying to identify who the people were.”

Locals may know the Gude name from the Kumquat Growers. That branch of the family is related to those who gathered at the reunion, but are not descendants of the ‘original 13’. Morrow said they would have loved to include them, but then he reunion would have been just too large to manage.

Crash Kills San Antonio Woman

A two-vehicle crash on Sunday claimed the life of a San Antonio woman, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Carolyn Bentley, 87, died following a collision in St. Joe.

Bentley was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo south on Lake Iola Road and had stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of County Road 578. She reportedly entered the path of a westbound 2008

Nissan Frontier pickup truck that 16-year-old Spring Hill girl was driving.

The front of the truck collided with the left rear side of Bentley’s car.

Her car came to rest on the southwest side of the intersection and the truck rotated and overturned onto its right side before coming to rest along the southern side of C.R. 578.

Bentley died at an area hospital from injuries she received in the crash, the FHP said.
