NAAMeetingMinutesMay7th,2017Minutes

The meeting was  held  at  Todd’s  Tavern,  Cedar Bluffs, NE. The meeting was called to order by president Kern. 

Roll  call  was  taken.  Showing  21  directors  present,  13 absent.

Craig  Hittner  moved  to  dispense  the  reading  of  the minutes. Second by Wade Schafersman. Motion carried. Motioned  by  Gary  Greving  to  approve  minutes  from March 5th, 2017. Second by Virg Crumley. Motion carried

Dan Mensik gave financial  report. Reviewed CD’s  that are  coming  due.  Two  CD’s  will  come  due  before  next director  meeting.  After  discussion  on  length  of  time  of CD renewals, Kevin Aurora moved to renew the maturing CD’s  at  19-month maturity  and  to  take  the  balance  in the checking account down from approximate $36,000 to $15,000 and add to  the maturing CD’s. Second by Gary Greving. Motion carried. 

Jay talked about the upcoming boat show on Saturday, May 13th, 2017. Requested directors help for setup Friday at 6 pm. Requested any directors to help the day of  the show as well. 

Discussion took place on how to plan for annual meeting. Much  discussion  on  how  to  elect  new  directors.  Gary Greving moved  to  divide  the  state  into  11  areas.  Gary presented  a  Nebraska  map  with  the  proposed  areas. Second  by  Virg  Crumley.  Motion  carried.  At  the  July meeting  the  directors  will  discuss  approximately  how 

many directors are needed and how many from each area. Dan Mensik will  try  to  get  an  idea  of  how many NAA members live in each area, to give an idea of how many directors may be needed per area. 

Randy  Kassmeier  gave  input  on  upcoming  Poker  Run on June 17th, 2017. He will get information for the June newsletter.

The directors reviewed thank you notes from Team Jack kids for appreciation of last year’s summer event. 

Herb  Angel  from  Nebraska  game  and  parks  spoke  at meeting.  The Game & Parks would  like  to  offer  a  boat inspection  opportunity  for  airboaters  to  have  their  boat inspected. Three different areas were discussed on where to host the boat inspections. This will take place on three separate  days.  Gary  Greving  moved  to  table  the  dates until  the  July  meeting,  as  June  is  very  full  of  events. Second by Craig Hittner. Motion carried.

Hoping to get newsletter out first week of June. 

The NAA $1,000 scholarship winners for 2017 are Sarah Stang, Jarred Ulferts, Brooke Podolak, Maddison Roumph and  Mathew  Lewis.  The  scholarship  committee  will discuss in June to interview the Barta/Kroeger winners. 

Motion  by  Craig  Hittner  to  adjourn.  Second  by  Kevin Aurora. Motion carried.

RiverRiddle?Four men were fishing in a boat on a lake. The boat turned over and all  four men sank to the bottom of the  lake. And yet not one single man got wet! How can this be?

Answer: All the men were married.

NOTE from your SECRETARY

It is here, Boating season. With that in mind, check your boats out for fixable problems on land. I have found that much easier than on a sandbar with lightning in the west. Double check your safety equipment you should have with you  at  all  times.  From  the  Nebraska  Game  and  Parks boating guide: flotation device, fire extinguisher, oars or paddle, whistle. Check  the  guide  out. Outdoornebraska.org/regulations. It has lots of information, including how and what type numbers for your boat.

Try and be courteous to land owners on the rivers. When cruising, try and stay toward the center of the river not to bother fisher people and gatherings.

Lots  of  events  this  summer.  Watch  the  newsletter,  or contact one of the directors. Have a safe boating season.

LETTERfrom the PRESIDENT

Ronald Reagan said - Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it  to  our  children  in  the  bloodstream.  It  must  be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.

This is important for the NAA, as our freedom on the river must be protected. We must build it for the next generation.  I encourage all of you to promote the  NAA  to  fellow  airboaters.  There  is  strength in  numbers,  when  we  work  together  anything  is possible.

As you put your airboats  in  the river  for another season  of  boating,  please  remember  why  we  have joined together. To fight for, protect and hand down our rights to ride our airboats on the river.

NOTE of THANkSTo  the  Fremont  Airboat  Club  for  hosting  the Nebraska Game & Parks Boating Safety class in April. Boating Safety Courses  teach  students how  to  safely operate  a  motorized  boat  while  following  all  rules and  regulations.  Topics  covered  include  navigation and  safe  operation,  Nebraska  laws,  and  emergency preparedness. Anyone  born  after December  31,  1985 is required to successfully complete a Boating Safety Course and possess a course certificate while operating a boat or personal watercraft.

Non-residents who have successfully completed a NASBLA approved boating safety course recognized by another state are allowed to operate a motorboat in Nebraska.

You must be at least 14 years of age to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft in Nebraska.

This 6 hour classroom session taught by Herb Angel, Boating Law Administrator, is a great way for boaters of all ages to learn more about operating a boat safely. Those who participated will not only make the river safer for themselves and their passengers, all of those on the water will be safer. You are commended for taking the time to participate in this boaters safety class.

Once again thank you to the Fremont Airboat Club, NG&P, Herb and the students for taking part in the Boater Education Course.

AIRBOATER’SCODE of ETHICS1.  I will respect the rights of all users of the recreational waterways of the state, on public waters 

and on adjacent private property.

2.  I will be considerate and courteous at public vessel launch ramps and docks. In an effort to not delay others, I will launch and retrieve my vessel promptly.

3.  I will always operate at a safe speed in posted “No Wake” zones.

4.  When approaching the shoreline, I will be especially aware of swimmers and other water vessels near the shoreline.

5.  I realize that my vessel’s equipment, ability, weather conditions, and especially other vessel traffic should determine my vessel speed.

6.  In case of an emergency, I will volunteer assistance.

7.  I am aware that my vessel creates air propeller wash and will use idle speed near the shoreline and in close proximity to boat launch ramps.

8.  I will ensure that all passengers in my vessel are equipped with safety equipment, including life vests, ear protection, eye protection, and required safety equipment.

9.  I will avoid unnecessary disturbance of wildlife and will not enter posted “No Trespass” areas.

10.  I will pay close attention to the engine sound levels that my vessel may create and be aware of how others on vessels and on the shoreline will react to it.

11.  I will not litter and will bring back all trash. I will be careful in handling my fuel.

12.  I will not interfere with or harass others. I realize that people will  judge all airboaters by my individual actions.

The  NAA  was  formed  in  May  1995.  Its  purpose  is  to preserve  and  protect  the  rights  of  airboat  owners,  by working with public and state agencies. We also need to be good stewards of the river and surrounding land, encourage safe and responsible  recreation. Protect  its watershed  from degradation and increase the community’s appreciation of its natural beauty.

DefendOurRights:  We have a lobbyist for the association to watch for changing legislation.

PromoteandEnhanceGoodStewardship: Encouraging others to join the NAA and always trying  to improve our organization.

EncouragingSafeandResponsibleRecreation:  We look out for each other and assist boats and passengers in trouble. Make sure everyone gets home safe to boat another day.

ProtectWatershedfromDegradation:  Be mindful of what you put into the river. Keeping our waters clean and clear of debris and trash will keep our rivers beautiful. Working to protect banks and property is a challenge but worth the fight to preserve our lands next to the river.

CommunityAppreciationfortheRiver’sNaturalBeauty:  By bringing our family and friends to the river for a fun outing teaches others of our states great resources, while just simply out for a good time together. Teaching our children who will be the next generation of boat owners ensures that the tradition carries on.

The  purpose  of  the  NAA  is  to  be  good  guardians  for  the rivers we love.
