By placing first among all the Nebraska weeklies entered, the Aurora News-Register will display the Loral Johnson Commu- nity Weekly Sweepstakes Award for one year. This year marks the 14th annual presentation of the Loral Johnson Community Newspaper Sweepstakes Award. Loral had a passion for community journalism throughout his life, and this award is given in memory of his enthusiasm. The Aurora News-Register finished with 17 first-place awards, 9 judged second best awards and 4 judged third best awards for a point total of 280. This is their third year to win this award, and they beat out the second place winner by 8 points. The Aurora News-Register has won this award in 2012 and 2013. The Norfolk Daily News was the winner in the daily category, which excludes dailies in Omaha and Lincoln. It finished with 10 first-place awards, 10 for second and 10 for third for a point total of 246. This is the first time the Norfolk Daily News has won the daily sweepstakes. They beat out the second place winner by 4 points. The dailies are judged in 48 categories, and the weeklies in 48 categories. Both focused on writing, photography, advertising, digital, design and creativity. Other weeklies in the top three were, second, Hickman Voice News, and the Gering Courier, third. LINCOLN — Sweepstakes winners in the Nebraska Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest are the weekly Aurora

News-Register and the daily Norfolk Daily News.

By placing first among all the Nebraska weeklies entered, the Aurora News-Register will display the Loral Johnson Commu-

nity Weekly Sweepstakes Award for one year. This year marks the 14th annual presentation of the Loral Johnson Community

Newspaper Sweepstakes Award. Loral had a passion for community journalism throughout his life, and this award is given in

memory of his enthusiasm. The Aurora News-Register finished with 17 first-place awards, 9 judged second best awards and 4

judged third best awards for a point total of 280. This is their third year to win this award, and they beat out the second place

winner by 8 points. The Aurora News-Register has won this award in 2012 and 2013.

The Norfolk Daily News was the winner in the daily category, which excludes dailies in Omaha and Lincoln. It finished with

10 first-place awards, 10 for second and 10 for third for a point total of 246. This is the first time the Norfolk Daily News has

won the daily sweepstakes. They beat out the second place winner by 4 points. The dailies are judged in 48 categories, and the

weeklies in 48 categories. Both focused on writing, photography, advertising, digital, design and creativity.

Other weeklies in the top three were, second, Hickman Voice News, and the Gering Courier, third.

Finishing second in the daily category was the Grand Island Independent with the North Platte Telegraph, third.

More than 3,800 separate entries, representing 9 dailies and 63 weeklies, were judged by members of the Kansas Press As-

sociation.

First, second and third place winners were announced Saturday night at an Awards Banquet at the Country Inn & Suites-North

in Lincoln, where more than 175 journalists attended.
