Positive Ageing in Spring Spring News 2017 Every year, the smell of Jasmine reminds me of the beauty of Spring and I marvel at the beautiful colours of the flowers around us. Whilst there is so much to enjoy outdoors, here at Affinity HQ, there is so much excitement in planning our last three months of 2017. We have new activities and new events coming up which I hope you will enjoy. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Affinity members who joined the club since July. I can honestly say that the best thing about our club is the lovely people I meet. We might come from different parts of the world but one thing is clear to me: we all want to be socially connected with like-minded people who have a ‘can do” attitude to life. It is great to embrace a positive thinking attitude which will keep all of us strong not only physically but mentally, too, for the long run. In August a group of members started playing Canasta, determined to learn it from scratch. Five weeks later, the learning continues and the enjoyment has multiplied. This goes to show that it is never too late to learn. Our club thrives on creating opportunities for members to enjoy a variety of activities and social events. In August, we went to the Swan Valley and enjoyed a nice lunch in good company. We had a much- enjoyed sing-along on our way home. More trips are planned and I will keep you informed of our next escape. Suggestions and recommendations are always welcome. This Spring, we are going to start our forthrightly ‘Scrabble mornings’ as requested by some of our members. Come along and enjoy a great game on our big boards. See our calendar for further details. Positive Ageing in Spring

Spring News 2017

Every year, the smell of Jasmine reminds me of the beauty of Spring and I marvel at the beautiful colours of the flowers around us.

It is great to embrace a positive thinking attitude which will keep all of us strong not only physically but mentally, too, for the

long run.

We had a much-enjoyed sing-along on our way home.

Also, you are welcome to

come and join our Canasta tables on Tuesdays at 1pm. Rules are still being learned by all who started last month, so if you want to know what it is about, give it a go.

We have been exercising to the tunes of Zumba Gold with great merengues, rock & roll and some disco music. Great fun and easy movements for all to follow. I have received great feedback from the current members attending the classes. Come and see it for yourself. Pilates for seniors has become one of our most popular classes with personalised advice and specific attention to your particular conditions. Yoga for seniors is very popular with our members. If you are new to Yoga, our teacher is always happy to help you learn the fundamentals at your own pace. Likewise, our Line Dancing teacher is always happy to go over the new steps with members trying the class for the first time.

I am currently planning our next big social event: High Tea with a show at Dalkeith Hall on Thursday 12 October from 2pm to 4pm. It is a 50’s & 60’s show, with songs and dances of the era performed by “7th Heaven”. It will be a wonderful way to travel to yesteryear and have a delicious afternoon tea in good company. In November, a Melbourne Cup lunch will be hosted by NCC and everyone is invited for this special celebration. There will be prizes for best hat and sweeps. Finally, in December, a Carol Concert with the Waratah Community Singers will take place at Dalkeith Hall on Tuesday December 5th. This will get you in the spirit of the festive

season. Save the dates and buy tickets for yourself and your friends!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Affinity volunteers who make possible the smooth running of all our weekly activities. Please note that your feedback is valuable and helps me to improve and grow our club. Enjoy the sunshine, walk with your hat on, challenge yourself and try something new this season.

Waratah Walkers

Trish Jamieson and our regular walkers meet up every Tuesday at 8am for a social walk to the river and surrounding areas. This is a free activity and we encourage everyone to attend, as it is not only good for your health but you’ll also meet new friends. Afterwards, the chat continues at Yabba Dabba Cafe. If you are a member, remember to say that it is a ‘Waratah Coffee’ order so that you can get a discount on your coffee. Please note that from December, our Waratah Walkers meet up at 7.30am. Pilates for Seniors

Canasta

Beginners are always welcome at our Pilates for Seniors Class. Our knowledgeable instructor Christiane McDougall takes care of all her new students and will take particular care of any condition you may have. Come and see for yourself!

This is such a fun game with a comprehensive set of rules that the current players are only just getting to grips with! Their ‘learning’ journey is fun to watch as some tables apply the rules in their own way under the watchful eye of one our most competent players. Five weeks on, the group is getting larger and the enthusiasm for the game is growing. Includes afternoon tea. New players are always welcome!

Monthly Good Company Group @ 1.30pm NCC day centre room

During the last three months, we had great presentations which were informative and useful for all our members. In July, we had a presentation about NBN and their arrival to our homes. The “IT Guys” from Subiaco, together with Telstra representatives explained the in’s and out’s of NBN. People were able to ask questions and take home informative leaflets.

In August, The Order of Australia National Chairman, Mr. Barry Nunn AO talked to us about the Australian Honours System. He explained which are the necessary steps to put someone’s name forward for ‘The order of Australia’. It was nice to see his medal and to learn about this process. Some attendees were keen to use this information for people they know.

In September, Rose Burton from Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA, talked to us about Osteoporosis. She answered questions from our members and gave us a very interesting and informative chat about the latest research on Osteoporosis.

Escape to the Swan Valley

What an enjoyable day we had at our ‘Escape to the Swan Valley’. Our members were enticed to come to a surprise location where they could do wine tasting and have a lunch that was

pocket friendly. Despite the weather, we all had a delicious lunch and a chance to meet new people from the different Affinity classes. On our way back to Dalkeith, we enjoyed a bus sing-along. More trips are planned for next year. Your suggestions are always welcome!
