POSITIVE AGEING It might be cold outside but here at Nedlands Community Care we are buzzing away planning new activities to keep our community physically and mentally active. Our annual survey last year revealed that our club members considered the Nedlands Affinity Club a place where they can enjoy a healthy lifestyle combined with friendships and interesting activities. POSITIVE AGEINGIt might be cold outside but here at Nedlands Community Care we are buzzing away planning new activities to keep our community physically and mentally active.

Our annual survey last year revealed that our club members considered the Nedlands Affinity Club a place where they can enjoy a healthy lifestyle combined with friendships and interesting activities. This reflects quite closely the Australian Psychological Society’s definition of Positive Ageing: “The process of maintaining a positive attitude, feeling good about yourself, keeping fit and healthy, and engaging fully in life as you age”.

So those who age positively live longer and have healthier lives and enjoy a good quality of life. The Nedlands Affinity Club aims to promote a “can do” attitude to life and enhance your wellbeing. Our schedule of activities has been very popular with our members since 2012.

After many years at the helm, Patricia Jamieson retired last February and I have taken over her role as the new Community Services Officer (Positive Ageing). I have recently graduated from The University of Notre Dame where I studied a Bachelor of Preventive Health.

POSITIVE AGEINGI have met some of our regular club members and feel grateful for your warm welcome to the Waratah hub. One of my aims is to continue exploring new activities that enhance our members’ lifestyles. Among the new activities scheduled for July/August 2016 are:

• Croquet at the Nedlands Croquet Club in Melvista Avenue• iPad/Smart Phone classes for seniors• Craft cafe• Tai chi for Arthritis for falls prevention• The playlist of your life. Please check our July/August calendar for more information in these activities and our current ones attended by our members. If you are not a member of our Affinity Club yet, you might like to consider becoming a member. It is that time of the year when members and new members register for the coming financial year, please find the registration form attached. New and old members need to fill in the form so that our database is updated accordingly. Your information remains private and is never offered to third parties. The annual fee is $20 and this year your membership card will have added benefits. Not only will you benefit from discounts on all our activities but also you will be able to purchase your coffee at the Waratah Coffee price of $4 when showing your Nedlands Affinity Club membership card at Yabba Dabba (Next door to Dalkeith Hall). This is yet another excuse to meet up after your regular activities. New members are always welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you want further information about our club.

Finally, I would be grateful for your continuous feedback and comments on current and new activities.

Keep warm, keep active and keep in touch.

TUESDAYS @ AFFINITY CLUB

The Waratah Walkers celebrated seven years of walking this year and continue to walk each Tuesday morning come rain or shine. During the past seven years many fun ideas and friendships have been forged while walking for heart, health and wellbeing. Participants walk for an hour covering between four and five kilometres with some hills or steps as we enjoy walking by the beautiful Swan River whenever possible.

The Waratah Walkers is a Heart Foundation Walking Group formed in April 2009 with the assistance of the Heart Foundation Group and Mel from the Travel team at the City of Nedlands. Many of the founding walkers are continuing to walk with the group today. Thank you to Keith, Pat and Lynn who step in whenever Trish is unable to lead the group.

Early in 2015 we commenced “Walking 101” for those members who find the pace and length of walk too much yet still enjoy a walk and get-together afterwards for coffee. My special thanks to France for your support in leading this group.

New members are always welcome to the groups including your dogs and grandchildren. We meet at the Dalkeith Hall at 7.30 am in summer and 8.00 am in winter months.

Laughter Yoga with Trish Jamieson

Meets up the second Wednesday of each month at 10.30 am.Our facilitator Trish delivers this course of aerobic activity, turning fake laughter into real laughter. The one hour routine has breathing exercises from yoga, hand clapping rhythms and playful exercises.

The brain cannot tell the difference between fake and real laughter and provides the positive benefits anyway. In a group, real laughter becomes contagious and participants gain the well-researched benefits.

Come and join in the fun! It will leave you feeling happy and positive the whole day!

Line Dancing at 1.30pm with Geoff Tuke The Line Dancers mastering another dance routine

Line Dancing exercises your body and your brain. It is a gentle exercise without the stress of a full-on line dance class. The music is a bit slower and therefore the dance sequences are shorter and it gives you the most enjoyable experience.

For Line Dancing you don’t need a partner and you meet like-minded people who are keen to have fun. You not only gain new friends but your vitality and stamina will improve after a few weeks of continuous practice. In an one hour class, you can do between 2,500 and 3,500 steps. This will make it so much easier to achieve your 10,000 steps per day. Come and have a try!Dalkeith Hall, Waratah Ave Cost: Affinity Club members: $7 Non-members: $10
