Dear Student friends,

National Education Foundation (NEF) Trust, since its inception, has been actively engaged in promotion of higher education in the entire North East India. Keeping in view the professional importance both at national and international levels, NEF has been looking ahead for expansion, extension and dissemination of higher education with more and more courses of modern studies. In its efforts to encourage and inspire the young generation to opt courses of human and professional interest, the Foundation has maintained constant touch with the modern trends in the fi elds of educational exploration and thus, it has maintained its pace and progress unabated in realizing its aims and objectives. It now stands as one of the premier institutions of the North East Region of the country by virtue of its devotion and service to the society as a whole.

NEF Law College offers a Five Year Law course - B.A., LL.B. (Hons), BBA,LL.B (Hons), B.Com.,LL.B (Hons), Three Year LL.B and LL.M. under Gauhati University. The courses will meet the long standing demand of students of the entire North East Region, who want to opt for Legal profession ‘by choice’ and not ‘by chance’. Above all, introduction of such courses in a College at Guwahati would reduce migration of students from this region to other states thereby minimizing ‘brain drain’ and at the same time it can be deemed as a small but signifi cant contribution towards the State Economy as it would reduce the outfl ow of resources- both human and fi nancial. Thus, NEF’s endeavor in this regard is hoped to be visualized as a pioneering step in popularizing and modernizing legal education in this part of the country. The Sky is the limit for NEF Law College. Those who wish to be the ‘Legal Eagles of the future’ are most welcome to NEF Law College.

Since its establishment in 2006, NEF Law College is striving for achieving its ambitious goal of becoming an excellent ‘Learning-centered institution’. We will only achieve it if we work together and if we dedicate our collective resolve to confront and resolve disputes and disagreements. Your assistance is crucial and I am looking forward to work with you as we continue to strengthen and improve NEF Law College. Please feel free to send me any query or comments you would like me to consider.

I am looking forward to the next part of our collective journey towards success.

Dear Students,

The idea of studying law is an exciting and intriguing prospect. The decision of choosing an institution to pursue your Law degree is a very important one, and for most of you is the fi rst major independent decision in your lives. This is a process that requires a lot of thinking. I take immense pride in welcoming you to NEF Law College, the fi rst Law College fi nest seat of Legal Education of North East India.

In order to understand better, the value addition of ‘Law’ education and its impact on the society as well as to groom up the budding talents and mould their career as Legal professionals, NEF Law College will undertake a comprehensive effort to develop and implement learning assessment. We want to become a ‘learning-centered’ institution and that requires a refocus on our attention to include learning and how it is assessed.

We do not lay emphasis on theoretical knowledge alone but stress on active participation of all students in the various national seminars, symposia, colloquia as well as moot courts that the college organizes. The interaction between our students and the speakers is of utmost importance to us, so we stress upon guest lectures by eminent legal luminaries, where the speakers to student ratio is less. In fact, Guest lectures and seminars are an integral part of our curriculum.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru once said, ‘Idealism of today is realism of tomorrow’. NEF Law College is a place where this cherished dream would come true.

I, therefore, hope that this prospectus will encourage you to apply to study law in NEF Law College, and I look forward to having the opportunity to welcome you to our Law College.

NOUR VISIONThe advent of globalisation and its attendent issues have alerted the foundational backdrop of the legal culture and the activities centered around law, which demands serious attention of the policy makers and intellectuals. Law is no longer confi ned to its traditional paradigm of being identifi ed as a mere discourse which controls external human conducts and ensures social justice. Law is slowly revealing itself as an essential medium of change as it has proved to be a constructive and useful mechanism for implementation of economic policy, thereby strenghthening the foundation of economy.

The new notion of law and jurisprudence demands a different attitude to legal studies and research. Theoretical knowledge – one mere confi ned to legal texts without interdisciplinary studies and practical exposure is unwarranted in the present day context, as one can not develop the skill of deciphering the legal issues which have surfaced as a result of the emergence of new economic understanding and technological development of the present millennium. All these necessitates Lawyers, Academicians and Researchers with exposure and skill to play a crucial role in chartering the course of our nation with sensitivity, vision, conviction and dedication. This requires institution of high standards, which will stimulate intellectual inquiry and excellence.

In view of this, NEF Law College will not only imbibe the tradition of multidisciplinary approach to the legal studies and research but also will make a genuine endeavour to propagate such approach to both the privileged and unprivileged learners and researchers of law and jurisprudence and thus strive to emancipate such interdisciplinary culture from the elitist dogmatism and carry the same to the grassroot level of the society. The Institution will earnestly aspire to strengthen the foundation of democratic and social values in our young generation and mould them into “social engineers” who will work towards building a “New India”.

OUR OBJECTIVE

(a) to advance and disseminate learning and knowledge of law and legal processes

(b) to develop in the students a sense of responsibility to serve society in the fi eld of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, parliamentary practice, law reforms and such other matters; and

(c) to make law and legal processes effi cient instruments of social development.

Law – A Modern Outlook

In his book ‘The Lawyer’, Martin Mayer describes Law School as the ‘crown jewel’ of the educational system, in part because Law School is the ‘last generalist professional degree’. Today, law is a fi eld of study that offers the recipient a wide range of career options, each requiring different skills but also possessing common characteristics. The options are endless in terms of practice areas and work environments. Lawyers might fi nd themselves arresting a ship or zoning a playground, working independently in their home or with others in corporate offi ces. Lawyers can practice law by helping clients plan to avoid and solve problems once they develop, by representing and counselling business in a particular industry, by representing individual’s sharing a common status or problems and by appearing (or not appearing) in court.

Law school teaches you to open your mind and think differently. This type of training is valuable in any career. Today, law is the pathway to fi nancial rewards, intellectual stimulation, prestige, family infl uence, social change & career fl exibility.

Career Opportunities

Today, law plays a decisive role in every sphere of society. Be it the corporate sector, the defence forces, private litigation, legal advice in advertising, intellectual property - Lawyers have become an indispensable part of modern life.

Some of the exciting career options that are available to law graduates are:

Legal offi cers in Corporate sector

Law offi cers with NGOs

Banking Sector

Tax Consultants

Corporate Lawyers

IPR Consultants

BA.LL.B. (Hons) - Bachelor of Laws is an integrated programme in Law. BA.LLB (Hons) is a fi ve-year duration programme. After completion of 10+2, a degree in law provides plenty of career opportunities. In this fi eld of law, social and fi nancial crisis amid the public are always marked. Law is one of the vital and most basic communal institutions. There are always crisis and injustice in the society if the people did just as they wished.

No society could ever exist until its members distinguish that they have certain obligation towards one another. The law sets up the system that describe human rights and obligations. The law punishes the people who break these rules. Law in various crimes and cases advises the Government. Mostly different government departments and police agencies see that laws are regulated amongst the people. The courts of that region help to these agencies to carry out the laws.

TRAVELLING CONCESSIONAll the regular students of the College are entitled to avail 50% concession on railway fares during their period of study.

MOOT COURTThe Moot Court is basically an activity that is followed for enhancing the presentation and argument skill of the students. It helps students to equip themselves to the standard of the society. To participate actively one should have the confi dence and should be a generalist i.e. one should analyze the facts of the case in the general point of view in regard to the subject of the case and learn to apply the law to the facts of the case. Students are expected to be a specialist in Law dealing in that particular subject, and be thorough with the latest case law and interpretation by the Supreme Court and the High Courts to get a better grip over the case or the position of the case.

In a Moot court, a hypothetical case is given to the students and they are allowed to argue the given case. Moot Court helps the students of law in many ways since it is a sort of practical legal training, which helps to build analytical reasoning, legal aptitude, team building skills and above all make them responsive.

Our student regularly participate in various regional and national level Moot Court competitions.
