FRIGHTFULLY FABULOUS FASHION SHOW One of the most anticipated events that Goodwill holds, in cooperation with the Milwaukee Office for Persons with Disabilities, is the TAP the Potential Fashion Show which has been taking place for many years! This year’s show took place on Friday October 25th at the Wil-O-Way Underwood building that houses our Community Opportunities Club-North in Wauwatosa. Participants from Goodwill Adult Day Programs as well as other day programs in the Milwaukee area, including Easter Seals, Adult Day Services of Southeast Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Center for Independence, work tirelessly to create one of a kind outfits they can wear proudly as they strut their stuff down the runway! The theme chosen for 2019 was Ghouls and Jewels. The models dressed-up in a variety of costumes from ghosts, witches, and werewolves, to zombie beauty queens, ghost prom, and vampire super models, as well as prom king & queen, masquerade ball, and bridesmaids! All costumes were purchased from Goodwill Store & Donation Centers to support

our mission of providing training and supportive services to individuals with disabilities, as well as recycle clothing and accessories! This event offers fun, skill-building activities for participants and gives our community the opportunity to see what day services programs have to offer! Participants get the chance to express themselves through clothing and the creation of their costumes, help adhere to the designated budget, and work as a team to match their outfits. This also gives Goodwill an amazing opportunity to partner with other agencies in the area and have them join us in celebrating the wonderful contributions of our participants. This year’s event was one for the books. All models, participants, volunteers, guests and staff had a wonderful time cheering on our models as they walked down the runway. Many people are already asking about the theme for next year and participants have been requesting to be models in the next show! Thank you to our community partners for your help and commitment to celebrating this wonderful event! We cannot wait for next year!

BUCYRUS CAMPUS OPENS OVERNIGHT RESPITE UNIT St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care opens its new Overnight Respite Care Unit at its north side Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave., beginning Friday, Dec. 6, for frail elders, those with dementia and adults with disabilities. “We’ll take very good care of your loved one, so you can get a much-needed break from the physical and emotional demands of caregiving,” said Sr. Edna Lonergan, founder and president of St. Ann Center, adding that respite is crucial for caregivers planning a, business trip, medical procedure or vacation. Lonergan noted the St. Ann Center’s south side campus has operated a successful overnight respite program for 12 years. The Bucyrus Campus overnight respite will initially be open on weekends, from Friday night through Monday morning, and expand as demand increases until it operates seven days a week year-round, as at the Stein. St. Ann Center also offers day care services for frail elders and adults with disabilities. The new unit features nine bed and-breakfast-style rooms with a cozy, homelike feeling. A large gathering room offers a fireplace, large flat-screen TV and nook for reading and playing games; fresh-cooked breakfasts, lunches and dinners will be served in the dining room. Guests can also enjoy a whirlpool bath, with bathing assistance. Neaver C. Walters, director of the new respite care unit, is a registered nurse with experience in hospitals, senior communities, the county’s psychiatric crisis unit and a Milwaukee Police Department district station office, and whose Milwaukee roots are on the north side. “Many caregivers are unaware that respite care exists, let alone in their own neighborhood,” she said. “We want them to know St. Ann Center is here for them, that we understand the demands placed on them, and that we’ll treat their loved ones with empathy and kindness.” Cost will vary, depending on level of care needed. St. Ann Center accepts private pay and payment assistance from Family Care, Community Care, Care Wisconsin, IRIS, Department on Aging and more.

Information on how to apply for overnight respite care can be found online at StAnnCenter.com/respite. To set up a personal tour, call 414-977-5079, or email [email protected].

New bench on State St. & 72nd St.

Newly installed bus shelter on 6th Street &

Highland Avenue

LET MCTS BE YOUR FREEDOM ON WHEELS IN 2019 @RideMCTS Happy Holidays! With the arrival of winter, temperatures and snowflakes are falling and soon enough, the mounds will be piling up! The white fluff is fun to play in, but not fun to travel in, especially when neighbors forget to shovel or salt their sidewalks. MCTS gives a friendly reminder and encourages all riders and residents to spread the word on the importance of snow removal at bus stops, as well as sidewalks and curb ramps. Keeping the ice and snow clear is crucial to people who have difficulty with mobility, as well as strollers and carts. The lack of a cleared path can prevent someone from even leaving their home, so remember to shovel and salt!! New Shelter & Benches In late November, a new shelter was installed at the southbound bus stop on 6th Street & Highland Avenue. The shelter will be available to passengers travelling to and from MATC and Fiserv Forum on Routes 40U, 42U, 80 & 143. Milwaukee’s newest annual holiday musical, Black Nativity by Langston Hughes’ song play is a testament to the power of gospel music, telling the classic story of the Nativity through a combination of African American scripture, poetry, dance, and song. Black Nativity by Langston Hughes is directed by Malkia Stampley and features a talented, all local cast and crew.

Each year, Stampley inspires social change through acknowledgement of a current community issue through perfor-mance prologue and post-performance audience engagement. “I allow a social issue that affects Milwaukee and the national community to be a guide as I stage the production. I like to think of it as a backdrop, a seed that will grow on its own once you leave the stage” says Stampley. She adds, “Our production takes place today, in a city like Mil-waukee, so I also ask myself every year ‘is this relevant?’
