From the Desk of Kristi Smith, LBSW, Social Services Director Happy New Year to our community at Good Neighbor Society! 2021 brings in a new year filled with hopes of health, love, and memories. It is the time of year we look forward to the many changes in healthcare with the advancement of treatments for COVID. It is a time when we look back and have feelings about the year we are leaving behind. We need remember what we have been through, what we have experienced, and what we have survived. I encourage everyone to give yourself a chance to mourn the losses of 2020. We need to remember those we lost and the medical issues we faced and overcame. We need to remember the time we lost with our family and friends. I encourage all of you to reach out to someone you trust for this. Reach out to your son, daughter, friend, pastor, social worker, or counselor. Please talk about these feelings. No one is alone in this boat. Everyone went through the challenges of 2020. We need to take a minute and pat ourselves on the back. We survived a pandemic that the US has not seen in over 100 years. We need to celebrate the new that is to come. Let us all find ways to bring in a healthy 2021. Let us give thanks for every day we reach into the new year. Let us rejoice in the new experiences we will have. Offer prayers for gatherings of people to start. Reach out to family and friends to share how you feel. Share that love, as today is a present and tomorrow is not a promise. Let us find exercise as a fuel to our body. Let us find comfort and positivity in our words as fuel for our spirit. Let us find conversations as fuel for our mind. 2021 will be our beginning. We will appreciate all those little things we took for granted. We will appreciate more, love more, and hope more. Happy New Years!! COVID-19 VACCINE Residents and employees at Good Neighbor Home will receive the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on Sunday, January 3rd, by CVS Pharmacy. The second dose will be given at least 21 days later and will take at least two weeks to build full immunity. In clinical studies, both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were >90% effective at preventing lab-confirmed COVID-19 illness. Side effects are usually mild. Common symptoms are pain/tenderness, swelling, and redness at the injection sites as well as headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, fever, and chills. Most side effects occur after second dose and symptoms usually resolve within a few days. Please note there will not be any immediate changes to our COVID restrictions after the vaccine is administered! The vaccine is the best defense we have against COVID and it will take time before life is back to “normal”. As always thank you for your support throughout these unprecedented times.

The Night Before Christmas The Night Before Christmas written by Clement C. Moore and illustrated by Charles Santore is a classic Christmas story loved by people of all ages. Check out the Good Neighbor Society Facebook page to see the video of residents reading the story!

7 Wellness Resolutions Worth Keeping in 2021 (from Mind Body Online) Wellness comes in 7 dimensions. Here are some ideas for staying well into the new year.

Physical: Take care of your body through nutrition, hydration, exercise, and rest. Shift your mindset to keep moving and eat a well-rounded diet to better your mental health, increase your overall energy, and live a longer, healthier life. You only get one body, it is essential that you treat it well!

Emotional: Recognize your feelings and manage them constructively. Find happiness in your daily life and routine. Acknowledge and manage your emotions. Find joy in the little things, live in the present, and seek help when you need it. Notice your breath, take time to enjoy your meals, find ways to practice gratitude, call or write a friend. This is your life, and you control your happiness.

Intellectual: Engage your mind and challenge your intellect. Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn more about? Read up on it. Exercise your creativity. Intelligence comes in many forms—find what inspires you and just go for it.

Spiritual: Connect to a greater purpose and find meaning in life. Sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves. Whether you find peace in organized religion or through solo meditation, there is no wrong answer. It is a personal journey you are entitled to. Find what brins you fulfillment. Try writing in a journal or take a five minutes a day to meditate and reflect.

Environmental: Acknowledge and better manage your surroundings. Keep your space tidy and eliminate excess items to find balance in the space you spend time in.

Social: Make supportive and beneficial connections with others. Whether you’re a social butterfly or you’re happy on your own, we all can use a little community. Find a way to fit others into your routine. Call your family, join a group program, grab coffee with a neighbor. We are social beings and connection with others makes up a crucial part of our overall well-being. So, write your friends, make plans, and connect this new year.

Occupational: Experience fulfillment in your role at this time in your life. We all want to be successful. Find contentment in your accomplishments and share your unique skills, gifts, and experiences with those around you.

Providing compassionate Christian care to those we serve since 1963.
