The University of Singapore The National University of Singapore, founded in 1905 by a group of representatives of

Chinese and other non-European communities, began with a medical school and expand-

ed into a multi-faceted university. The vision of NUS is to make a leading global university centered in Asia, influencing the future. The Mission is to transform the way people think and do things through education, research and service. One of the advantages of this school is that they pay for school tuition. Actually they lend money to students. They lend 60% of school tuition to students, and when they get to graduate school they ask students to get a job and work for Singapore for 2 years. If they work 2 years, the money they lent to students is becomes a subsidy.

Carleton College Carleton College is private liberal arts college in the historic town of Northfield, Minnesota. Founded on October 12, 1866, Carleton is a small, liberal arts college offering 39 different majors and 16 concentrations. The academic calendar is unusual in that it follows a tri-mester system not commonly seen in institutions of higher learning, where students usually take 3 classes per term. In order to graduate with a degree from Carleton, students must take classes in a first year Argument & Inquiry Seminar, a writing course, three quantitative reasoning encounters, language, international studies, intercultural domestic studies, humanistic inquiry, literary/artistic inquiry, arts practice, natural science, formal or statisti-cal reasoning, social inquiry, and physical education. The average size of class in Carleton is 17, and the ratio of students to faculty is 9:1. The most special thing about this college that I’ve found is that there is a program called “Off campus” in which the students go to other countries to experience many new things.

St. John’s college St. John’s College is a private liberal arts college known for its peculiar curriculum focused on reading and discussing the Greet Books of Western Civilization. Founded in 1699. The College curriculum has taken various forms throughout its history. It actually began with a general program of study in the liberal arts, but after many difficulties, such as losing its accreditation, it changed. Now they chose 100 classic books and get all through in 4 years. This makes the St. John’s College distinct from other colleges. Some might think it’s easy, but classic books are not easy. Each book is over 200 pages. So this College is focusing on student’s ability to think, and not just acquiring information. Many people are curious: ‘Is it possible to get a job after just reading 100 classic books?’ However, interesting the thing is that they do get jobs in many fields. So if you are the person who puts more value on think-ing analytically rather than just making good grades, then this school will be perfect for you.

UNIVERSITIES OF THE WORLD

Chili peppers actually originated in

the Americas. During the 16th century they spread across the world through the Spanish and Portuguese shipping trade. Today India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of chili peppers. Nevertheless, if you want to experience the most authentic, inspiring, astonishingly awesome and stupendously delicious chili dish, then you need to harken back to the America’s and learn how they cook it in Texas. Texans love to eat chili and call their most famous dish chili con carne, which is simply Spanish for “chili with meat.” The ingredients are simple, and the amounts of each can be taken loosely, depending on your personal taste: 1 kilogram of beef, cut in bite-sized pieces 4 kilograms of fresh tomatoes, cut into quar-ters 2 tablespoons oil 2 tablespoons cumin seeds 3-4 cloves garlic 2 onions

Salt chili peppers, diced (Various kinds will work though red peppers and jalapenos work best.) fresh or dried oregano fresh cilantro grated cheese ½ cup masa or corn flour Heat the oil and brown the minced garlic and cumin seeds in it. Then add the onions. (You can also add diced celery here if you like.) Two minutes later add the meat. When the meat is seared, drain most of the fat. Then add the tomatoes. Thirty minutes later add the peppers, oregano and salt. Continue to simmer for another 30-60 minutes, or until all the tomatoes have cooked down. Mix the masa or corn flour with a cup of warm water and then add to the chili. This will thicken it some. We also like to add beans to the chili. Serve it with grated cheese, chopped onions, cilant-ro, and corn bread or tortillas.

PHONE GAMES MAKE YOU A

BETTER PERSON

Many people say that we play phone games for no reason other

than fun. But they could not be more wrong. When we play games we think logically, which helps us. They also improve our thumb-eye coordi-nation, which could serve us well later in life. They also help us cultivate friendships in the midst of a desperate and maddening world. Why do they make the games? Is it just to make money? The answer is “NO!!” They want to help us. For example, the game League of Legends (LOL) requires a lot of strategizing and planning—skills which could make us more successful in the future. People have to communicate effectively with their teammates through chat.

They must cooperate with their team to take down turrets, to get to their nexus and win. This is REALLY hard and it’s not just about walking around and killing people. It actually does make you smarter and in many ways it can be better than playing sports. Phone games also build character. When you hear this do you want to tell me that its just a dream? Listen, there is nothing easy in this world. You should do everything step by step, so you can slowly improve from being an amateur to being a pro. If you get tired of playing and want to give up, it means you are a silly person because you thought it was going to be an easy job to win. But you can’t give up. You might have to lose some sleep. Later, when have a job but you regret that you chose that job, and when it gets hard, don’t give up. Try your best. It will be good for you to have success in your job. So eat your vegetables, do your home-work, get some exercise, and play phone games. In the words of Confu-cius, “Our greatest glory is not in nev-er falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

CHERRY BLOSSOMS Cherry Blossoms are a type of Japanese

flower, but they are also widely distributed across South Korea, China, and other Asian countries. This Flower blooms in April and May, giving us many benefits. The first advantage is their beauty. People go out to look at them and usually take pic-tures or have a date when the flowers bloom. In Nanjing everyone goes to ZhongShanling, the park near the Muxuyuan subway stop. The flower’s color is white and light pink. The height of the tree is 1.5 to 2 meters. This tree has no hair, and its color is reddish brown, changing to dark green at maturity. The second advantage is of course eating

the fruits the trees bare. Everyone loves cherries, cherry pie (Mrs. Melissa makes an awesome cherry pie), cherry ice cream, cherry slushes and smoothies, cherries on an ice cream sundae, cherry cake, cherries jubilee, roast lamb with cherry glaze (like in the movie How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days), and dried cherries. Must…have…cherries! The last benefit is the trees medicinal use—both of the bark and the fruit. The bark of a tree is used for medicinal use. We can use them to prevent tooth trouble. In China, people use the inside skin of the blossoms to produce a cough medicine. The cherry fruit, which grows during June and July, is a natural laxative. So if you eat too much meat and get clogged up, eat some cherries!

MOVIES & POPCORN

ABOUT TIME Kelly

Love and Life is all about timing, and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. In this

fair condition, people all around the world build up their own lives, find love, and

grow to be old. And what if your knowledgeable father suddenly reveals a life

changing news when you are a 21 years old man- that you can travel in time?

Yes, it is possible in this lovely movie, <About time>. This seemingly unrealistic fea-

ture is extremely elaborately managed in this movie, infatuating millions of audi-

ences. Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) in the blind restau-

rant and falls in love with her. Unfortunately, after the unexpected time travel for

his hopeless roommate, the incident of meeting Mary in the restaurant disappears.

The unfortunate time travel says that Tim and Mary has never met before. After all

the cunny time traveling, Tim finds Mary, his destined love, and wins her heart.

However, as time goes by, Tim realizes that the time travel is dangerous enough to

change the “present” in an abrupt, unexpected way. He also finds out that time

travel is not the way to comfort all the sorrow and misunderstandings in life.

This movie, without any antagonists or conflict, depicts the wonderfulness of life

and the prominence of it. Rachel McAdams, reproving her nickname “The queen of

Romance movies”, has added another successful movie in her record. This movie is

not only about “time” indeed. Rather, it is about one’s love, life, and the inquiry of

it.
