    Nellore

    Nellore the headquarters of Nellore district, the southern most coastal district in Andhra Pradesh. The area of the district is 13076 sq. kms.

    History Nellore district formed part of the composite Madras State t ill 1st October 1953. On 1st November 1956 when the states were reorganised on a linguistic basis t his districtcame under the Andhra Pradesh State.

    Nellore was also known as Vikramasimhapuri. Historically, the place is very important. Culturally, Nellore town stands unique among the other towns of Andhra Pradesh as it issupposed to be the place where the greatest of the Telugu poets, Tikkana Somayaji, who translated the Mahabharata into Telugu, lived.

    Nellore is most famous for its paddy cultivation. It is known as the rice bowl of India. It is also famous for the aqua culture.

    Nellore is also famous for its temples, most magnificent among them is Ranganayaka swami Temple.
