Definition.Nephrology nursing involvesboth preventing disease and assessing thehealth needs of patients and families.

Care spans the life cycle and involvespatients who are experiencing the realor threatened impact of acute or chronic

kidney failure. These patients need well-educated, highly skilled, motivatedregistered nurses.

Technological and educational advancesmake it a dynamic field, rich with a widevariety of career opportunities for a newgraduate or an experienced practitioner.

History.Nephrology has been recognizedas a specialty for over 35 years. In 1973,treatment for end stage kidney diseaseby hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ortransplantation was funded by the federalgovernment and became more readilyavailable.

Since then, the role of the nephrologynurse has greatly expanded and practiceboundaries broadened.

Knowledge Base.Nephrology nursingpractice requires a common knowledge baseto care for pediatric, adult, and geriatricpatients with kidney disease.

To provide optimum care tailored toeach patients needs, specialized areas of

nephrology nursing have evolved, alongwith nurses knowledge and skills.

These skills primarily relate to modalities oftherapy. These include: Hemodialysis Peritoneal dialysis Transplantation Continuous renal replacement therapy Conservative management Other extracorporeal therapies

Nephrology nursing practice overlapsthe boundaries of other specialty areas.For example, transplant nurses now carefor patients who receive multi-organtransplants. This diversity is one of the mostappealing aspects to practitioners.

Populations. The broad scope of

nephrology nursing practice reflects thediverse and challenging patient groupsnurses may encounter.

Patients include pediatric, adult, andgeriatric individuals from a variety of ethnicgroups. They have acute or chronic kidneyfailure, or are at risk for kidney disease.

Care may be extremely complex: patientsmay have cardiovascular disease, diabetes,

hypertension, infectious disease, bonedisease, or drug addiction. In addition,many face psychosocial issues. Patients learnto cope with these problems over time,especially with the help of an interested,knowledgeable, and compassionate healthcare team.

The nurses role is to help patients managetheir lives succeed at school or work,socialize, maintain relationships, or try a newhobby while effectively dealing with theirhealth issues.

Practice Areas. Nephrology nursingpractice occurs in primary, secondary, andtertiary care settings and in the home wherever individuals experiencing or at riskfor kidney disease receive health care.

Conservative Management. Not allpatients with kidney disease require dialysis.Some diseases that affect the kidneys aretreatable and potentially curable. In thesecases, one of the nephrology nurses primaryroles is to educate patients about theirdiseases, prognoses, and treatments.

Opportunities in Nephrology NursingEducation. There are many optionsavailable for nurses pursuing a careerin nephrology education. In the worksetting, the educator is a valuable resource

as a coach for new staff or for nursesin other disciplines. In the academicsetting, educators may choose to teachbasic nursing, masters, or doctoral levelprograms.

Management. Strong leaders and skilledcommunicators are ideal for the manymanagement and administrative positionsnow available. Superior patient care skills

are needed, and most settings prefera BSN or advanced degree. The role ischallenging, evolving, and exciting.

Research. A data-driven society and thegoal of evidence-based quality care hasbroadened this area for nephrology nurses.To help improve nephrology treatmentsand support advances in practice, ANNAhas joined other corporations to make fundsavailable for nephrology nursing research.

Case Management. The nephrologynurse case manager oversees the quality,outcome, and cost of patient care. Patientadvocacy and continuity of care are twovital components of this role.

Advanced Practice Nursing.Advancedpractice nurses (APN) in nephrology includeclinical nurse specialists (CNS) and nursepractitioners (NP). The APN provides care

for patients along the continuum of kidneydisease and in all treatment modalities. Boththe CNS and NP roles are utilized in theinpatient and outpatient settings with thenurses working as clinicians, consultants,educators, and researchers.

Corporate/Government.There aremany opportunities for the nephrologynurse seeking a change from traditional

nursing roles. Corporate employers includenational and international manufacturersand distributors of dialysis and relatedequipment, as well as pharmaceuticalcompanies. In government settings, nursesmay find work at the local, state, or federallevels.

Pediatric Nephrology.This is a growingsubspecialty, with pediatric nephrologynurses practicing in all treatment modalities.Nurses in this area find tremendousfulfillment from working with children andtheir families.

Since it was established as a nonprofitorganization in 1969, the AmericanNephrology Nurses Association (ANNA)has been serving members who span thenephrology nursing spectrum.

ANNA has a membership of over 11,000registered nurses and other health careprofessionals at all levels of practice.Members work in such areas as conservativemanagement, peritoneal dialysis,

hemodialysis, continuous renal replacementtherapies, transplantation, industry, andgovernment/regulatory agencies.

Because ANNA offers programs to mentornewcomers and develop leaders, theassociation has been extremely successful inhelping members attain their goals.

ANNA serves its members through anational structure separated into fourregions. Within these regions are over 100local chapters. The association also offerstop quality education services, products,conferences, and programs. State-of-the-art technology provides networkingopportunities and supports a vast array ofmember services and resources on the Website, www.annanurse.org.

Educational Opportunities

Nephrology Nursing Journal (NNJ).ANNA membership includesNNJ, the associations officialpublication. This bimonthlypeer-reviewed journal containsoriginal articles, research, specialfeatures, and editorials. NNJpresents the latest advancesin practice and is an essentialclinical and academic resource.Members also receive ANNA

Programs.Education at all practice levelsis offered annually through the NationalSymposium and the Fall Meeting forNephrology Nurse Managers, AdvancedPractice Nurses, and Clinicians.
