We’lllook forward seeing them all next summer.
If you didn’t make it down town on Decem-ber 4th, to the HOLIDAYS ON BROAD-WAY event, you missed a great time. Spon-sored by the Downtown Alliance (Salt LakeCity), and billed as a stroll down Broadway(300 So.), with “Treats, Music and Shop-ping”, It was a chance to visit some of ourfavorite antiques shops and dealers in acharming festive evening setting. We’relooking forward to this event next year. Ifyou like friends, fun & food, don’t forget tojoin us.

If you stopped by Les & Joan Schofield’s newshop during Dec., you were likely disap-pointed. You know what they say about thebest laid plans. Les tells me that they willbe open starting January 12th, Tue -Sat 11to 6. I’m sure it’s going to be worth the wait.Let’s all get out and support this fine shop.
UADA MeetingsThe next meeting of the Utah AntiquesDealers Association will be held January13th, at Capital City Antiques in Salt LakeCity (see calendar of events). Attendanceat these meetings has been dropping off asof late, and dealers need to remember thatwe are not yet out of the woods with thePawnshop/secondhand merchandise law. There are legislators who intend to amendthe law during the next session, to includeantiques shops & dealers. The associationwill need everyone to participate to be ef-fective in keeping our businesses free ofthese regulations. Hopefully everyone willturn out for this important pre-legislaturemeeting.
Quite a few shops have failed to renew theirmembership in the association. Rememberto renew your membership, and be a partof the solution to this problem.
How can you support your Antiques DealersAssociation? Call association President PennyMcLaughlin at 801.255 5666 and find out.
There’s new antiques & decor shop havingit’s grand opening in January! Now & Thenlocated in Lehi is a nice edition to the an-tiques shopping scene (see page 11 for de-tails).

Times were simple in the 1800-1900's and families worked hard and with what little they had. They were also creative in using available materials to create useful things. It was a time when nothing was wasted.
The charm of primitive antiques is that they convey a more simplistic lifestyle of a time gone by. With warm and muted colors and natural distressed wear, each piece has a story to tell. These
primitive pieces represent a well used item or toy from someone's life that lived many years ago. Some primi-tives are just hand carved wood objects that serve no purpose other than as a novelty. Some are beautifully crafted pieces of well loved furniture, handmade tools or farm implements. Often collectors of primitives are also fascinated by folk art of the same period, and find the two collections compliment each other.
Your interest in Primitives may have begun from simply stepping into a shop or antique mall and finding an old, time worn piece that caught your eye and started an in-terest in items from the past. Many people these days
decorate their entire homes to recapture that time-worn, comfortable look that reflects a simpler time.
The great thing about collecting Primitives is that perfection is not required, unlike Many other types of antiques. Simple is the word when it comes to describing Primitives, second to "worn or distressed". In fact, the less perfect the piece the better. You may find yourself drawn to pieces with more distress lines and char-acter, the appeal of chipped paint, and surfaces worn smooth by years of use.
The world of Primitives is so extensive it is im-possible to go into detail on all the wonderful Primitive pieces out there. Some collectors enjoy collect-ing and displaying crockery, quilts, toys, wool rugs, hand made tools, and dolls. Other people collect Americana primitives, old kitchenware items, pails, baskets, butter molds, washboards and hand painted boxes and chests. Collectors, especially those new to primitives need to be a bit careful, and know what they
are looking at. There are many reproductions of primitive pieces, which have been expertly dis-tressed, and can easily fool the novice collector.

Daniel Cooper at Star Mill Antiques in American fork, kept us all entertained with his Saturday Markets. On any weekend you could find a farmers market, along with fire trucks, parades, Santa Claus and even a psychic fair.
Fairview offers one of the finest small town historical museums we’ve encountered. Lo-cated in an historic school, this one has it all, including history, antiques, arts & even a Mastodon. (May issue)

Add an air of class to the joint.
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night shall keep her from her appointed rounds……. My wife Lyn ducks into a nice dry tent during the very rainy Ketchum Id. show. There’s antiques in there you know! Let’s remember that the antiques busi-ness is really just about the customers. Give em’ what they want, and they’ll keep coming back. If they’re all like Lyn, we’re all in for a good year.
Let’s not forget our customers
Cap & Sue Ferry. UADA legislative lobbyists.
Doesn't that Grinch remind you of someone? Ah, could it be our friendly Utah legislators. For the 3rd consecu-tive year, this motley group attempted to bring Utah antiques shops under the same onerous regulations as pawnshops. However, their insanity was beaten back by our Utah Antiques Dealers Association, along with lobbyists Sue & Cap Ferry. Don’t breathe easy yet. Word is that the Grinch will be back up to the same tricks in the 2010 session. Wish us luck!

I’m always excited about the prospects of anew shop opening. So, January brings us atreat, the grand opening of Nicole Millheimand her husband Dave’s new store, Now &Then. The name perfectly describes thisnew Lehi shop, which offers a unique blendof merchandise.
Long time collectors, the Millheim’s seemto be following the current trend of mixingantique’s along with new and used designerand decorative items. Hence the juxpositionsuggested in the shops name. By combin-ing the old with the new, Nicole & Davehave created a comfortable atmosphere thatis a feast for the eyes, and can be easy onthe pocket book.

Locks: The lock was probably an Egyptian inventionthat goes back more than 4,000 years. ‘Warded’ locks(i.e. a lock with a fixed obstruction to prevent thewrong key from entering) are very old. Next comethe ‘tumbler’ lock, which differs from the ward inthat the obstruction moves when the right key isinserted. Another basic form of lock is thecombination or ‘letter’ lock in which the letters ofthe alphabet are engraved on revolving rings (fourusually), the mechanism being set to permit the lockto open only if the correct combination is known.
Long-case Clock: The correct name for a grandfatherclock; first made c. 1660.
Loo Table: Folding card table; sometimes baize-topped; name derives from game of ‘Loo’.

Louis XIV, Style of: The period between 1660 and1715, known as the Grand Wcle and characterizedby State intervention in the production of works ofart. Decoration was sumptuous and massive; muchuse was made of modeled stucco, gilt metalornaments and marble for wall-linings.
Louis XV, Style of (1723-74): After a short period oftransition (see Regence) the style shows a greatersuppleness in the general design of decoration andfurniture, a reaction against the preceding reign. Therococo was established with its accent onasymmetry. Seat furniture became lighter and morecomfortable, and small bureau and tables weredesigned.
Louis XVI, Style of (1744-93): During this period thestraight line was recalled to structure in furnitureand decoration. Under the influence of the classicalrevival vertical and horizontal lines predominateand detail moves in the direction of refinement anddelicacy until about 1790.
Love-seat: A small settee for two and no more.
Loving Cup: Twin-handled drinking vessel.

Most of us never quite give up our teenage years. Those years which lay the very foundation of what we will eventually become. We carry vi-brant, indelible, full color memories of the great events of our youth, noting exactly where we were or what we were doing during each mile-stone. The minds of my generation were im-printed with pride as we watched John Glenn or-bit the Earth, gripped with fear as the Cuban mis-sile crisis unfolded, darkness & despair following the tragic assassination of John Kennedy, and, on Sunday February 9, 1964, at 8 p.m., wonder and awe as the Beatles made their first American de-but on The Ed Sullivan Show.
We were transfixed. Having been granted special dispensation to miss church, my older sister, brother and I sat before the black & white TV in our living room, and participated in what would become one of the most iconoclastic cultural events of our times. For 73 million American’s, the earth stood still. My sister gasp as the televi-sion station superimposed the words, "Sorry Girls, He's Married," over John Lennon. The Beatles would sing 5 songs, and we would never be the same.
The Beatles Feb. 9th appearance would be just the beginning. In all, from 1964 through 1966, the Beatles would appear 8 more times on the Ed Sul-livan Show, along with over 50 stadium/coliseum concerts. And, they would release (between the U.S. & Britain) 29 albums encompassing 213 origi-nal songs. From Meet the Beatles with it’s roots steeped in American rock & roll and English mercy beat, and the love themed songs of their early albums, to the more introspective offerings of Rubber Soul and Revolver to the psychedelic mas-terpieces Mystery Tour & Sgt. Peppers, the Beatles would take us on a musical and cultural journey which would integrate their music into our souls for the rest of our lives.
Although the Beatles would disband in 1969, they would leave behind millions of records, both 45 rpm and albums. These would become some of the most sought after and treasured possessions of many record collectors. It's not possible here to look at all the Beatles records, so we’ll take a look at the complexities of just one, Meet The Beatles, the bands second album released in America (Introducing the Beatles, a repackage version of the English Please Please Me album was released in the U.S. Jan. 10th 1964, 10 days before Meet The Beatles).

I haven't given values for these records because I believe the most important reason to collect Beatles
records, is for the enjoyment of the music. While I have bought & sold many scarce or rare Beatles
records, my personal collection consists of records that I listen to.
