This prospectus gives you all the information you will need about life at theCollege. I hope that you find it useful in making your decision about the nextstage in your education.

We have a range of further education coursesthat we are expanding all the time, and ourcampus provides outstanding facilities for all ourstudents. Our results are amongst some of thebest in the region and many of our studentsprogress onto university, employment or an HEcourse at New College Stamford to study for anHND, a foundation degree or full honours degree.We believe that you can choose a course at NewCollege Stamford secure in the knowledge thateveryone will be supporting you to achieve yourambition.

Traditional Values Modern ThinkingNew College Stamford sits in the heart of the community, on the edge ofthis stunning market town

Stamford is a great town in whichto study. It has everything youcould need, nestled amongstbeautiful surroundings with quietpretty places when you’re lookingfor peace and quiet, and vibrantpulsating entertainment whenyou’re not!

Stamford is at the southernmost tip ofLincolnshire bordering Cambridgeshire, Rutlandand Northamptonshire and only 100 miles northof London. Described as England’s finest stonetown, the buildings, many Georgian, are built fromlocally quarried stone. The town tumbles down tothe Meadows and the River Welland thatmeanders along under fine bridges towardsCambridgeshire in one direction and Rutland in theother.

Stamford’s economy was based on agricultureand trade. The town had a major boom followingthe development of the stagecoach. With theGreat North Road, a legacy of the Romans,passing through the town at the height of itsprosperity Stamford was visited by up to 2000travellers a day. The famous coaching inn, theGeorge Hotel, is still a popular destination fortourists and local people. There is a good trainservice to and from Stamford which sits on thecentral network from Birmingham toPeterborough.

Though quite a small town there is a thrivingnightlife with bars, restaurants, cafes and clubs tosuit every taste and pocket. Stamford Arts Centreboasts a wide range of theatre, cinema, music,dance and visual arts activities. The CornExchange Theatre has just undergone majorrefurbishment by volunteers.

The Riverside Music Festival is one of a number ofStamford events which also include the ThaiFestival, Classic Cars and Antiques shows all ofwhich are held on the Meadows throughout thesummer. The annual Mid Lent Fair also takes overthe whole town during the spring.

Shopping in Stamford is a delight, with many well known high street retailers sitting besideinteresting and diverse independent shops including fashion, art dealers, interior design andmore besides.

Qualifications The main qualifications offered by New College Stamford are:

AS/A Levels: You will follow a structured learning programmeand be taught by highly qualified tutors. In the firstyear of your studies you will complete 3 or 4 ASlevels followed by 3 A2 courses in year 2. To studyA Levels you will need at least 5 GCSEs at A*- Cgrades but we do assess your average GCSEpoints score when you arrive in order to give youthe best possible advice and guidance.

BTEC Diplomas and Certificates: These qualifications focus on a particularoccupational area. A BTEC Level 2 Diploma isbroadly equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Grade C. BTECLevel 3 Extended Diplomas are broadly equivalentto 3 A Levels. They are a popular choice forstudents seeking to gain specific skills andknowledge within their chosen career. BTECqualifications are recognised by all reputableemployers and provide progression routes tofurther and higher study.

NVQs/VRQs Diplomas: These are qualifications that recognise skills thatare needed in the workplace. You will becontinually assessed on the practical activities thatyou carry out in college and during workplacement settings. In addition you will study thetheory relative to the subject.

Entry Level Programmes: These routes will give you the first step on thequalifications ladder. These courses will give youthe chance to gain a greater sense ofindependence and self-confidence as well asprepare you for the work place or further study.

Foundation Level (1): Foundation Level (1) courses offer students whoneed more individual support to achieve a Level 1course. These courses allow students to build onessential skills and general education and getexperience in vocational areas.

Higher Education: We have a range of HNDs, foundation degreesand full honours degrees on offer at New CollegeStamford. Please see our website or our separateHE prospectus for information, or call 01780484311 to request a copy.

Opportunities: We have excellent links with regional universitieswhich will help you decide on your next step if you intend to continue into higher education. These links include seminars led by visitingsubject specialists and regular visits to universityopen days.

PSD (Personal and Social Development):Level 1 and 2 courses will also complete aqualification called 'Employability and PersonalDevelopment' to be run alongside their mainsubject qualification. It involves genericemployment and personal skills that are related toyour chosen vocational area. The aim is to developthe 'soft skills' required by employers.

Animal CareEnvironmental concerns are increasinglydominating the world in which we live and interestin these courses has never been higher.

Our Animal Care Clinic has a range of birds,insects, reptiles and other animals that you willlearn to look after.

Business & ITYou will train in our dedicated computer suites ontechnology installed with industry standardsoftware, specialist networking facilities and awide range of programming languages.Experienced IT lecturers will support and help you at every step of your journey. Businesslearners get the extra benefit of planned workexperience programmes.

Construction & Motor VehicleOur exciting Construction and Motor Vehicle Skillscourses includes industry standard workshopfacilities and experienced lecturers from industry.The facilities available include state-of-the-artelectronic diagnostic equipment for motor vehicleactivities and all you need to study a wide range ofconstruction skills including electrical installation,carpentry and joinery or brickwork.

Creative ArtsThe Visual Arts Centre has spacious base roomsand studios well equipped for life drawing,photography, 3D work, pattern cutting andceramics with Multimedia and Graphics learnersbenefiting from their own computing areas. All theArt & Design courses culminate in an end of yearexhibition and fashion show giving you the chanceto showcase your talents.

Early Years, Health & Social CareOur range of programmes are highly regarded byemployers and provide an insight into the EarlyYears, Health and Social Care industries. Thecorridors are always highly decorated with workprepared by the learners and this knowledge isput into good practical use during the valuablework placements which are a major part of yourcourse.

Hair Design & Beauty TherapyThe Hair Design Courses and Wellness Centre, forBeauty and Spa Therapy, have an enviablereputation for training highly talentedprofessionals. Each of our new salons are fullyequipped and operates as a commercialenterprise, taking appointments from membersof the public throughout the week and giving youthe opportunity to train in a wide variety oftreatments and aspects of salon work.

Hospitality & CateringYou need to be multi-skilled, highly trained andprofessional to work in the catering and hospitalityindustry. This is why you learn your skills in ourmodern training kitchen, pastry kitchen,demonstration room and the locally renownedGallery Restaurant. Your day-to-day work atcollege is enhanced by residential visits,prestigious work placements and exclusiveopportunities to work with visiting professionals.

Public ServicesThese programmes are specifically designed for learners interested in careers in the Army,Navy, Air Force, Royal Marines, Police, FireBrigade, Prison Service, Security Industry andAmbulance Service. You will be taught by staffwho have recent military and/or emergencyservices training.

Performing Arts and MediaThis exciting area of the college includes a StudioTheatre, rehearsal rooms, dance studio andaccess to the talents of our Media Makeuplearners who will work with you on wardrobedesign and special effects makeup.

We have also recently invested in an audio-mediasuite which includes a radio and recordingproduction studio.

SportNew College Stamford is supporting London 2012. We want you to be the sports performers,planners, leaders, and instructors of the future.We have upgraded our facilities to provide youwith a flood lit multi-functional outdoor area and atop quality fitness suite. We have broadened ourrange of courses to suit everyone; from thosewho want the practical skills to manage or coachsports to those who want to progress on to highereducation sports programmes.

Travel and TourismYou will gain first hand experience of this excitingindustry through work placements, visits toorganisations and trips to various tourist centres.To help you develop those essential work skills, wehave opened our own Travel Shop where learnerswill gain realistic work experience.

EnrichmentNew College Stamford offers arounded education to its students,and whether you are studying anacademic A level programme orundertaking a vocational course,you are encouraged to think beyondthe classroom or workshop.

An enrichment programme has been put togetherto ensure you make the most of your spare time.Activities include badminton, swimming, film club,and many more.

You will find plenty of resources at New College Stamford from thetraditional library to high specification computer areas. Everywhere is userfriendly and well stocked with the resources you need to assist you withresearch and gathering materials for assignments.

Learning Resource CentreThis is an area providing books, periodicals,newspapers, computer software and othercourse-related materials. It combines a spaciousgeneral study area with clusters of open accessand bookable computers and rooms set-aside forsilent study or group work.

Staff in the Learning Resource Centre will showyou how and where to find the information youneed and if they can’t find the information thenthey will direct you to someone who can!

Information Technology SuiteNew College Stamford has outstanding IT facilitiesavailable for all students to use. Situated above thelibrary, the new Open Access IT suite providesstate-of-the-art facilities. With access to theinternet and online databases you will be able tobroaden your research skills whilst working in acomfortable and welcoming environment.

Food & DrinkThe Refectory is centrally situated and is openfrom early morning until after lunchtime servingfresh meals, snacks and drinks at reasonableprices. New College Stamford also has a Bistro inthe Welcome Zone selling fresh sandwiches/rolls,salads, soup, jacket potatoes, pastries, cakes andmuch more.

Chill Out!Use the Common Room as a place to chill out andchat to friends, listen to music or play pool. Youcan also discuss ideas with the Student Unionteam who have their office in the Common Room.

The Equality ShopThe Equality Shop sells newspapers andmagazines as well as a broad range of Fair Tradeconfectionery and gifts. The shop is run by ourSkills for Work and Living Students.

We are here to help you at all stages of your journey. We will provideadvice before you start at New College Stamford and we will help you to make the most of your time whilst you are at college. We will also offer you advice and guidance as you leave us for university,further study or employment.

Student AdvisorsStudent Advisors will help you settle into collegelife. They will help you manage your time, developyour study skills and help build your confidence.You will meet with your Student Advisor for agroup tutorial once a week.

Personal CounsellingCollege Counsellors are available during the day onan appointment or drop in basis. They offer one-to-one private counselling about issues that maybe affecting you. It could be concerns aboutcollege work, family relationships, personalrelationships, self esteem or a host of otherproblems – everything is dealt with in a friendlybut confidential manner.

Careers Guidance and AdviceThis is a very important aspect of support for allour students. Our qualified and experiencedadvisers hold individual careers interviews as wellas assisting students with information on applying

for training schemes, jobs, CV writing, taking a year out and applying for higher education.You can access careers advice by visiting ourCareers and Higher Education Coordinator or the Advice and Guidance team.

The Careers Library is situated within theLearning Resource Centre (LRC) and managed ona day-to-day basis to ensure that all theinformation is up-to-date and accurate. There isaccess to the internet and a wide range of careerrelated computer software.

OpportunitiesWe have excellent links with regional universitieswhich will help you decide on your next step if youintend to continue into higher education. SafeguardingNew College Stamford is committed to carryingout all its activities with a view to safeguarding andpromoting the welfare of children and youngpeople. Our child protection policy and proceduresare rigid and thorough and are in keeping withlocally agreed inter-agency procedures. All students receive information, advice andguidance throughout their time with us to ensurethat a safe and suitable learning environment ismaintained. The College has also recentlyintroduced on-site security procedures and allstudents, staff and visitors must wear formal IDbadges whilst on all College premises to ensurethat we effectively monitor and recogniseeveryone who is at the College.

Money MattersWe can provide you with confidential advice on a range of funding andfinancial issues that may be of concern to you during your time at New College Stamford.

Tuition Fees You can study a full-time course free of chargeif you are a UK student and are under 19 yearsof age on 31 August 2011. Please rememberthat you may need to buy some specialistequipment and materials and/or a uniformdepending on the course that you choose.

If you are over 19 years of age you will beasked to pay towards the cost of your tuition.The 2010/11 fee was £750 per year. However, ifyou are studying towards a full level 2 or level3 qualification and you do not already have afull level 2 or level 3 qualification, you may nothave to pay any fees.

Staff in Learner Services can provide you withconfidential advice on a range of funding andfinancial issues that may be of concern to youduring your time at College.

Care to LearnIf you are under 20 years old when you startyour course and have a child you may be entitledto up to £160 per child per week for childcare andany additional travel costs, unless childcare ismore than 1 mile away from the College. The fund is paid directly to your childcare provider and to the course provider so that they can fundyour travel.

New College Stamford Learner Support FundThis fund can help with costs for books,equipment, exam fees, childcare and transport.There are, of course, some conditions you and/oryour parents must meet in order to be eligible forassistance (e.g. be on a low income or in receipt ofan income tested benefit).

16 - 19 BursaryIf you are aged 16-19 (18 as at 31 August 2012), youmay be able to apply for help through the newBursary fund. This fund can help with costsassociated with undertaking your course (eg.equipment and transport) and it is means tested.

How do I apply for financial help?Talk to staff in Learner Services to find out if youqualify for any of the these funds. They have theapplication forms and further information and willtalk you through the various details. Call 01780 484344.

Additional SupportDuring your first few weeks in College your course tutors will be gettingto know you and finding out about the skills you have and where youneed extra help in order to successfully complete your course.

Sometimes you may need extra help with literacy,numeracy, exam skills, writing an assignment orany other problem that may be worrying you. Wewill assess whether in class or one-to-onesupport in the Study Centre would be beneficial.

If you know you have a learning or physicaldisability or think you may have – don’t let thatstop you doing the course you want to do.

We have experienced staff who will work withyou and your course tutors, to ensure that youget the support you need. When you first come to New College Stamford you will be asked to takepart in an assessment of your reading, writingand maths as this will help us make sure we areoffering you the right support and help in the right areas.

You will have a chance to speak with one of theStudy Centre team at your interview.

We welcome applications from students whomay need some extra help because of a learningdifficulty or a disability.

We have staff who are qualified to teachstudents:• With severe to mild learning difficulties• Who are deaf and hearing impaired• With specific learning difficulties• With basic skills needs• Who are blind or visually impaired• Who have a physical disability.

Functional SkillsThese are those transferable skills necessaryfor everybody to succeed in learning,employment and life. They are the skills youneed to deal with new tasks and newchallenges. They will help you to succeed inyour studies, to progress in your career and tomanage your life.

All are nationally recognised qualifications thatprepare you for your future career andincrease your potential employability. You willuse these skills for CV writing and producingjob applications. They will also contribute toyour UCAS points if you are planning to go touniversity.

Please note that short courses only earn half the points. If you have taken a BTEC level 1 (Introductory Diploma)or level 2 (First Diploma) qualification, this also scores points.

The APS is a valuable indicator of your likelihood of success on the A levelcourse. We use it to determine whether a subject is a suitable option for youwhen you enrol and embark on the course. Each grade that you achieve isgiven a points score, as shown in the table below, and the average is then found.

Do this calculation once you have all your results thencompare the final average with the figures quoted for thesubjects that you would like to do.

Full details are available at interview.

Remember that the whole point of this system is toensure that you select subjects in which you have a very good chance of success.

We have a fantastic range of AS and A Level courses on offer at NewCollege Stamford and new for 2012/2013 we are offering an AS/A Levelin French. Our A Level results are amongst some of the best in thecountry with 99.7% pass rate on all A Levels.

ContentYear 1 - AS level (2 units)The AS is studied in the first year. It forms 50% ofthe assessment weighting of the full A level. AScan be taken as a stand-alone specification or aspart of the full A level course. The assessment ofthe AS is divided into two units.

Unit 1: Exploration of drama and theatreElement 1 - Students will practically explore twocontrasting play texts. Written coursework basedon research and practical exploration of the playswill provide the evidence for this unit.Element 2 - Students will evaluate a live theatreperformance.

Unit 2: Theatre text in performanceElement 1 - A group performance of a publishedplay.Element 2 - Perform a monologue or a duologuefrom a different play to previously chosen. Ineither element you may opt for design over acting.

FP2 – This unit introduces and expands on topicscovered at FP1 to include sum of series using themethod of differences, 1st and 2nd orderdifferential equations, further complex numbers,modulus of graphical functions andapproximations using Taylors and Maclaurin'sseries.

ContentYear 1Unit 1: Investigating Media. Students will investigate a wide

range of media texts to familiarise themselves withthe language of media. The qualification provides the basic backgroundskills, knowledge and understanding required towork effectively as a member of cabin crew.Students will study in our impressive mockaircraft cabin 'Stamford Airways', which willprovide them with the opportunity to completepractical assessments in a realistic workingenvironment. Students will also be required toparticipate in an assessment day at an airlinetraining centre which will cost approx £75.

Progression/career opportunities This qualification is equivalent to 2 A Levels and isrecognised as a progression to higher education tostudy for a foundation degree. Successfulcompletion of the course could enable students toapply for a range of jobs within the travel andtourism industry such as overseas resortrepresentative, sales advisor within a travelagency or call centre, various positions within ahotel/ hospitality or visitor attraction setting.
