The Evening Chronicle, 30 March 2006Tree-mendous

Seven talented fine art students from a Tynesidecollege are celebrating after their sculptures werechosen as features in a woodland walk.

The five sculptures, made by students at NewcastleCollege, are based on the theme of the ‘spirit’ of theAlnwick Garden’s Woodland Walk, the history, cultureand spirituality of Northumberland.

They will be officially unveiled in June when theDiocese and the Bishop of Newcastle will be holding aGarden Party to celebrate the 125th anniversary of thefounding of the Diocese of Newcastle.

Chosen by representatives from the Alnwick Gardensout of 20 proposals, the sculptures range from a life-size stag based on the legend of St Aidan to organicshapes, which will be wall mounted and covered withalgae and moss ready for installation into theWoodland Walk.

The Evening Chronicle, 30 March 2006Sweet treat was egg-static

Students and chefs from across the North East havejoined forces this week to boost their knowledge ofchocolate and confectionery.

Hosted by Ildo Nicolello from Artistry in Patisserie andConfectionery, the Newcastle College students, chefsfrom local industry including Café 21, NewcastleUnited football Club, Jordan’s and Louis Restaurantsand chef lecturers from other colleges, developed theirchocolate skills.

Being held at Newcastle College’s state-of-the-artChef’s Academy until tomorrow, the course coverseverything from tempering techniques, modellingchocolate into baskets, boxes and ribbons, as well ashow to make chocolate liquors and Easter eggs.Ken Thompson, section manager for hospitality atNewcastle College, said: This was an excellentopportunity for the students and industry to gain aninsight into the skills and patience involved in workingwith chocolate. It proved a huge success and some ofthe finished pieces were more like works of art than achocolate treat.”
