The RAT Pack has been successful at building a pipeline to diverse candidates. 10:15 STRIDE Presentation: Faculty Recruitment for Diversity and Excellence Room #320 Dr. Jackie Isaacs, Northeastern University Dr. George Adams, Northeastern University STRIDE stands for Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Improve Diversity and Excellence. NU STRIDE is a team of faculty who aim to increase faculty diversity through a better understanding of implicit biases in evaluation procedures and by expanding applicant pools. In this session, the discussion focuses on how to create a "grass roots" team; why a focus on faculty diversity is important; how STRIDE efforts break down a bottleneck in the pipeline; what resources might be necessary; and whether outcomes from STRIDE have been effective at Northeastern. 10:15 An Integrative Approach to Increasing Workforce Development Room #322 Mai Vang, Teresa Malonzo, Talia Fox, and Elizabeth Ancarana, Harvard University The Office of the Assistant to the President for Institutional Diversity and Equity at Harvard University oversees the Administrative Fellowship Program, which is designed to attract talented professionals, particularly members of historically underrepresented groups, to promote leadership opportunities and careers in higher education. The program offers a twelve-month talent management experience complemented by a professional development program, and provides participants with opportunities to enhance their professional experiences by both working within an academic environment as a mid-level administrator and working in an area that broadens and deepens previous opportunities. !!The Office of Faculty Development and Diversity serves as Harvard University's central faculty affairs office. The Office works closely with colleagues across the University to make Harvard a more welcoming and diverse institution by devising strategies for attracting exceptional scholars and nurturing their development. Recent initiatives of the Office include the production of a guide on Best Practices for Conducting Faculty Searches, pan-University activities for faculty development, and the Faculty Climate Survey.

10:15 Future Faculty Fellowship Programs Room #333 Rita Colucci, Esq., Framingham State University Jan Rinehart, Northeastern University The Northeastern Future Faculty Fellowship is designed to encourage and promote excellence and diversity in the pool of future faculty candidates in the STEM fields at Northeastern. The program prepares Future Faculty Fellows for possible tenure-track appointments at Northeastern and introduces the academic community to these qualified post-doctoral researchers. Framingham State University’s Diversity Fellows Program brings in faculty for one-year appointments with the goal of diversifying the curriculum. Successful candidates are eligible to remain for an additional year with consideration for a tenure track position thereafter. The program has resulted in the attraction and retention of diverse faculty who might have otherwise sought opportunities elsewhere. 10:15 Guiding Faculty and Staff Searches in Higher Education Room #340 Dana Hutchinson, Champlain College Institutions of higher learning are compelled to cultivate educational and work environments rich in diversity and opportunity. To that end, this presentation will cover best practices that can help drive higher education interests around diversity and inclusion strategies, and to assure compliance with federal regulations through affirmative recruiting practices and philosophies. This workshop will address concepts such as cultural fluency, diversity as an imperative, essential elements of a successful search, dynamic networking, objective selection, interview protocol and question guidance, and ideas on creating inclusive welcoming impressions. New to the presenter's toolbox, and ripe for sharing, are social recruiting strategies and how to recruit for niche positions. This is an important training opportunity for hiring managers and campus leaders chairing and participating in searches. 11:15 Break McLeod Suites Break and travel time to lunch 11:30 Lunch Curry Student Center Ballroom Lunch and New England HERC Update Ruth Molina, Director 12:30 Expanding the Pipeline, Improving the Process: A Discussion on Disability and the Recruitment Cycle Curry Student Center Ballroom Panel of regional leaders facilitated by Dr. Jennifer Ivers Brian Charlson, Director of Technology, Carroll Center for the Blind Marianne Gilmore, MS, CRC, CESP, Workforce Development Specialist at Carroll Center for the Blind Dr. Oce Harrison, Director, New England ADA Center, Institute for Human Centered Design Kathy Petkauskos, Director, Work Without Limits, Disability, Health and Employment Policy Unit, Center for Health Policy and Research, UMass Medical School Recent federal regulations require more directed initiatives to recruit and hire staff with all levels of abilities. Dr. Ansley Abraham is founding director of the Southern Regional Education Board State Doctoral Scholars Program in Atlanta, GA. Under Dr. Abraham’s direction, the board has developed one of the nation’s best-documented and nationally honored programs for producing minority Ph.D.s who seek faculty careers. The Doctoral Scholars Program is successfully producing minority graduates—more than 730—who are employed on college and university campuses. Currently, more than 360 scholars are progressing toward the Ph.D. The Doctoral Scholars Program annually sponsors the Compact for Faculty Diversity Institute on Teaching and Mentoring. The Institute is a nationwide effort of state, federal, and private agencies and organizations committed to faculty diversity. More than 1,200 minority

Ph.D. scholars and their mentors come together to learn the skills and knowledge necessary for the successful completion of the doctoral degree and transition into an academic career. The Institute is the largest gathering of minority Ph.D. students in the nation. Dr. Abraham has directed studies at SREB that covered several topics, including perception of the campus climate by minority and majority group students on historically black and predominantly white campuses. Dr. Abraham also completed two widely acclaimed studies on statewide assessment and placement standards and the need for developmental education for entering college students in the SREB region. As a result of his research, Dr. Abraham has published numerous articles and monographs. Dr. Abraham earned his B.S. in sociology and psychology, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in sociology (with an emphasis on sociology of education and race/ethnic relations) from Florida State University.
