Financial Peace University: Fall TermThis life-changing class, taught by Dave Ramsey and a teaching team via video and coordinated by New Hope's Michael Adu, will help you achieve your financial goals by

showing you how to eliminate debt, save for the future and give like never before. The fall session begins in September. Stay tuned for registration details!

What a great month it's been! Every Sabbath since July 13, an average of 80 kids have invaded the Colossal Coaster World Amusement Park to spend an hour and a half learning about how to believe that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind. The kids are learning this lesson through Paul's trials by having to leave a city in a basket, being put in prison, witnessing to a crowd and more.

There are crafts and songs and a short movie each week starring Daniel, a young man afraid to ride the largest roller coaster in the world, the Vaporizer 3000. Daniel is using 2 Timothy 1:7 to learn that God does not want us to be afraid of anything.

With a great, smiling staff of volunteers, these children will leave VBS with a way to face life without fear.

Next Sabbath will mark the final day of the program. Here are just a few scenes from Colossal Coaster World (otherwise known as the multipurpose room).

God’s Daily WordUse the following passages to explore biblical examples of friendship:

SUNDAY Ruth 1:16-17

MONDAY 1 Samuel 18:1-3

TUESDAY Job 2:11-13

WEDNESDAY 2 Kings 2:2

THURSDAY Romans 16:3-4

FRIDAY Philippians 2:19-26

Weekly ChallengeThink about the friendships you have right now. What is one way you can be more loyal to those friends? Do it this week.

Marlene sat at the table by the window. She wore a simple dress with a single strand of pearls around her neck. Her shoes and handbag matched, and her white hair was perfectly coifed. The table in front of her was set with fine china, with two place settings for English high tea. The second teacup across the table was full, and a little plate had cookies and strawberries on it. But Marlene sat alone eating scones and finger sandwiches and sipping her tea, a small but forlorn smile on her face as she looked around the crowded café at the other patrons enjoying their afternoon tea. The other place setting remained untouched.

For more than 40 years, Marlene and her best friend, Evelyn, would meet every Wednesday at a little café in Kensington, Md. They would sip tea and talk about the events in their lives. They did this faithfully through their early marriage years, children, grandchildren and, eventually, the loss of their spouses. It started in 1962 at the soda counter of Woolworth’s. Marlene and Evelyn were both homemakers, and their children had music lessons in the building next door. Marlene came in looking for a place to sit and saw a well-dressed, perfectly coifed Evelyn sitting on the counter stool. Their conversation flowed easily as they realized how similar their lives were. They always dressed up in pretty dresses, pearls and high

heels. They always had afternoon tea. They always left after one hour.

Evelyn died of cancer 15 years ago. Marlene was devastated. No one saw her for many years afterward. Then one Wednesday afternoon, five years ago, she walked into the café and ordered afternoon tea for two. She has been doing this ever since. She always sits alone, the other place setting remaining untouched. She is always perfectly coifed, finely dressed and wearing a single strand of pearls. She always leaves after an hour.

Author Ann Lamont once wrote that friendships help us survive life. “Friendship is a mild word for such an extraordinary and holy connection, for what can be the most sustaining, life-giving, death-defying relationships some of us will ever experience. Our closest friendships are hallowed ground.”

When was the last time you thanked God for a friend?
