You've been involved in a number of ways here at New Hope. Why did you get involved in this new ministry?Since we began to attend New Hope three years ago, we saw a need, and then it was expressed to us by the pastoral staff. Also, we had led out in Deacon Ministries in our previous church. So we accepted the challenge to develop this ministry.

What were you looking for in people to serve in this role?People willing to SERVE the congregation, HELP wherever they are needed and to show God's LOVE in everything they do, from the smallest thing to the mightiest….We are thrilled with everyone who has come on board and are especially happy to see some of our young men involved as well.

How are deacons different from the ushers we had before? We feel that ushers are what is needed at the theater or in sports arenas, and a deacon ministry is what is needed at New Hope. We want this to be a much broader ministry, which will take time, nurturing and plenty of prayer — by and for all of us.

What is the vision for our deacons and their role at New Hope?We would like our ministry team to be one well-working family group that understands where we all are coming from in different backgrounds/areas of life, but we meld like brothers and sisters under God's love for His people.

How many deacons are there? We have 21. We would love to have more, if someone — male or female — feels led to join us.

What are you hoping to see happen with the deacon ministry? We want people to see that deacons do more each week than just help you find a seat and collect the offering. We are there to secure the facility, the children, the congregation. We are setting up training sessions to certify deacons in first aid and CPR. We would love to have the deacons become an irresistible force in caring for our church community.

New Hope’s Deacon Ministry

The new deacon ministry officially launched with a special ordination ceremony last Sabbath. Each deacon received new work gloves, which “does not mean that they unclog toilets,” Pastor Ann Roda explained. “These individuals are called to model what true servant leadership is….This is a symbol of them accepting the call that God has given to them, that with their hands they will glorify God. They will build up the church. They will lead others to serve God.”

Head deacons David and Sheri Flower worked with Roda — and with much prayer — to build the ministry and identify the right individuals to serve in this new role. They share more about this emerging ministry here:

Q&A

We ask anyone who wants to become a member of our church to take Entrance to New Hope, a three-hour class after second service. We set aside this unique time so people can find out more about the mission and vision of the congregation straight from our pastors — and so they are fully aware of the value we place on membership.

Interested? Register at lookingforachurch.org/membership, the Ask-Me Desk or by texting MEMBER to 410-541-6394. Lunch and childcare will be provided.

Weekly ChallengeReflect on past conflicts and how you handled them. How did God help you work through those differences? Or are there still places where God needs to bring healing or restoration? Pray that God would help you discover whatever lessons you still need to learn from those

In the winter of 1964, Nelson Mandela arrived on Robben Island, where he would spend 18 of his 27 years in prison. He was known as #46664. Prisoners there were never referred to by their names, just their numbers. Confined to a small cell, the floor his bed, a bucket for a toilet, he was forced to do hard labor in a quarry. He was allowed one visitor per year for 30 minutes. He could write and receive one letter every six months.

But Robben Island became the crucible that transformed him. Through his intelligence, charm and dignified defiance, Mandela eventually won over even the most brutal prison officials. He emerged from prison the mature leader who, as president, would create a new democratic South Africa.

Mandela is widely known as a true statesman. Black people look upon him with pride, and white people regard him with respect. This is not simply because he spent almost three decades in apartheid jails but because he brought about conflict resolution and reconciliation on a person-to-person level. When he was president, he refused to allow blacks to exact vengeance against their white counterparts; instead,

he asked white people to remain in the country, keep their property and join in developing South Africa as a truly multiracial society. Mandela has often said, “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”

"Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone" (Romans 12:17-18, NLT).
