Dear Parents and Carers,
I’ve had the privilege this week of spending time in North Adelaide in a
mentoring role as part of the Leadership Development Program for
aspiring leaders in Lutheran schools across Australia. Some years ago I
was a participant, so being able to contribute to the journey of
emerging leaders is an absolute honour.
As well as being able to support and serve a colleague exploring
eadership in education, it was also extremely worthwhile for me as I
reflected on my own practice as I lead at Encounter.
Although there are countless theories of leadership, the one resonating
reality is that it’s ultimately a team effort. Aristotle’s much-quoted ‘the
whole is more than the sum of its parts’ is just so very true.
As I reflect on a Term 1 that has been full, fun and frantic, I’d like to
acknowledge the entire staff team and their efforts in leading and loving
throughout the learning journey thus far.
Have a blessed autumn break
God’s Blessings

VOLUNTEER MORNING TEA
Encounter will be hosting a Volunteers’ Morning
Tea on Monday 30th April - the first day of Term 2 -
after Opening Shine at 9.30am.
We invite all parents, grandparents & friends who
have given up their precious time over the past 12
months to serve our College, to come along to
our Opening Shine at 9am and stay for this
morning tea to show our appreciation.
Dear Parents,
There is always lots going on in the Junior School and
this fortnight has been no exception. Yesterday the
Year 6 cohort returned from their last ever camp as
Junior School students. This year's camp was held at
Wirraway Homestead just out of Strathalbyn in the
most glorious bush setting. Camps at Encounter make
up a very important part of the extra-curricular
program and give our students opportunities to
develop skills and dispositions in a context beyond
the classroom environment.
Activities such as archery, horse-riding, hiking and
sheep mustering, provided many rich opportunities to
develop confidence and self-esteem, independence
and leadership qualities as well as time out to grow
spiritually. The students have certainly bonded more
closely as a cohort due to their time together outside
of school. A big thanks to the willing parents that
assisted Mr Riggs and Ms Mariner. Such support from
our volunteers is so appreciated.
Years R-5 enjoyed their final swimming lessons for the
year, which centred around water safety, and we
received some wonderful feedback about the ways
in which our students conducted themselves both at
the pool and on the bus. This is always great to hear
and I certainly observed it for myself on visits to the
Aquatic Centre.
Finally, we received some exciting news that we will
be integrating some more iPads into the Year 5 and 6
classes as of next term. These devices are a fabulous
way to support the learning of our students and as
well as allowing us to differentiate the curriculum
effectively. They also enable us to capture
thinking and provide opportunities to further enrich
the learning experiences of our students. They will also
be instrumental in supporting a more seamless
transition to Middle School for our Year 6's, which is a
big advantage too.
Enjoy a well earned break in routine over the next 2
weeks and I look forward to seeing you all raring to
go in Term 2!
Blessings,
Tori Weiss
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
As Term 1 draws to a close, it is time to reflect back and
celebrate a wonderful start to the 2018 year.
From our Opening SHINE, through Night on the Green,
Sports Day, Year 12 formal and culminating in parent
teacher interviews, I give thanks for the wonderful
community that ‘is’ Encounter.
I would like to publicly thank the staff for their incredible
effort this term, as they continually go above and
beyond for our students.
To the students, thank you for upholding the wonderful
care and concern for others that has become a hallmark
of Middle and Senior School.
To the families, thank you for your trust, and I sincerely
hope you all have a wonderful break from the routines of
school days.
We have a new staff member starting in Term 2 , Mr Craig
Bottrill, who will be replacing Mrs Jo Scott in her ongoing
absence, teaching year 8 & 9 Maths and Year 10
Science. We thank Mr Ian Price for his service this term
stepping in so readily to support our students.
I wish you every blessing for the holiday break, and I look
forward to seeing you all back in Term 2.
Blessings,
Penny McKenzie
Inclusive Education Review – parent survey
At Encounter Lutheran College we are consistently
reviewing our practice to ensure our students are
receiving recognised best practice in the classroom and
beyond. This year we are undertaking a review of our
Inclusive (or Adaptive) Education programs. Part of this
review to is gather information, or data, from our families
who have had support. If your child has received any
‘extra’ support in their journey at Encounter, we ask that
you complete a short survey to assist us. We would be
very grateful for any information you provide.

SANTOS Athletics
On Friday the 6th of April Encounter sent a team of
outstanding athletes to SANTOS stadium for the
School Sport South Australia Interschool Athletics
competition.
Nerves hit hard when students were faced with the
daunting sight of the number of other schools.
Despite this, the team displayed a high level of
competitiveness all day.
Competition was tough, especially considering we
have moved up divisions over the previous few
years. Both boys and girls finished with a 5th overall.
An honourable mention needs to go to those
students who competed in up to 6 events due to our
relatively small pool of numbers to fill a team
compared to many other schools. Your effort is
highly appreciated.
Relax Refresh Recharge
Psalm 23:2-3
He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads
me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He
guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name's
sake.
After parent teacher interviews conclude Friday we
should all plan to take the time to refresh ourselves,
recharge our batteries, relax our minds and be closer to
God.
Term one always feels long and tiring, not only as staff
members but for parents and I’m sure for the students
too. I am certainly ready for no alarm, no routine, quiet
time in the garden, my new book and no nagging
about homework!
Whilst in the garden with the warm autumn sun on my
back and dirt on my hands my mind can be free from
stress and clutter and I can be at one with God. Time
spent with a cup of tea, biscuit and my head in a book
soothes the heart and mind. A family walk along the
beach with our puppy rejuvenates the soul.
With high ambitions, dreams, and goals, we tend to be
over-worked and under-rested. Proper rest, however,
plays a significant role in living the Abundant Life!
Without adequate relaxation
and rejuvenation, we lack the
strength and energy to fulfill all
of the plans God has for our
lives and we are unable to
achieve our God-given
potential!

AROUND THE COLLEGE
The year 9/10 Drama class (MERAKI) are proud to present their first ever production. 2 one act plays will be
performed in The Nest at 6pm Tuesday 8th May and 6pm Wednesday 9th May 2018.
“Trapped”, written by Ed Monk and performed with permission from Playscripts.com, is about an Army
Soldier caught in a no-win situation. Faced with the inevitable, his past replays before his eyes in a series of
flashbacks.
It will have you questioning ‘what is actually important in my life?’
Written by Allison Green and performed with permission from Theatrefolk Inc., “Anonymous” centres upon 16
year old ‘Me’ as she navigates a new school. She has a deep secret, which through the support of her close
friends, is able to face. We can all relate to this character, and the insecurities we faced as
teenagers.
Tickets are $5 and available through trybooking.com https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=366647
