Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you all had the chance to spend some time with your families in the beautiful winter sunshine and take a break from work or the busy routine of home life.

Once again our Staff Development Day was jam packed! It is lovely to welcome Mrs Lobb back and the staff were very relaxed after their break. On Monday we participated in Code of Conduct and Prevention of Corruption training (both mandatory). We started our journey in improving our formative assessment practices, and for the remainder of this year we will be working on Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. Both of these aspects of teaching and learning are fundamental in helping students know where they are going with their learning and how they know if they have been successful.

We also spent a session on whole school data, and looked at ways we can track student results so we can see achievement over time. We developed a schedule of whole school assessment, so that we have consistency across the school and improved communication about student achievement. This will help as students move from class to class and transition into Year 3.

One of the goals in the NSW Department of Education Strategic Plan 2018-2022 is:

Every student, every teacher, every leader and every school improves every year.

Our activities on SDD, certainly are helping us at NLHIS move towards this goal, but we know this is not possible without the support of parents. We would like to know what we can do to help you support your child’s learning at home. Last term I worked with the P&C to develop a quick survey to help us plan some ways we can support parents with learning at home.

Please complete the survey by clicking on this link:

This will be the first of two surveys that will be sent home this term. The second will be the TTFM Parents as Partners Survey, which will be open later in the term.

The information received from parent surveys is extremely valuable for feedback purposes as well as with our planning. We would be grateful if you could take the time to complete any that are sent home.

We have another busy term planned. Look forward to working with you all again.

MY COMMUNITY PROJECT GRANTS – VOTE NOW and TELL EVERYONE… Share it with your friends. Thanks to an application written by Barbara Rose-Townsend last term we are a finalist to receive a grant towards our playground. If successful the P&C will receive a grant to install drainage and a build a retaining wall near our fixed equipment. With our new sails and new imaginative play areas, this will be the final piece to make our ‘Harmony Playground’. See the P&C report from Kate Murphy for details. WE NEED LOTS OF VOTES … Most votes win!

ROAD TRIP ... Speaking of our imaginative play area, Kate Murphy and I will be taking a road trip tomorrow to look other schools that have imaginative play spaces. We will be taking some friends from Year 1 so they can bring some more ideas back to school.

A BIG THANK YOU We are so lucky to have such a variety of skills and knowledge within our parent community. What is even better is their willingness to share with our kids. Thank you to Claire Walshe for giving up her time to teach the students yoga on the last day of Term 2. It was so much fun!

HUNTER DANCE FESTIVAL The big night is almost here. On Monday our Year 2 students will travel to Wests Newcastle during the day for a dress rehearsal and then will return at night to perform. We are so proud of their efforts and they are going to be spectacular. Thank you to Mrs Dowman for her amazing organisation and to Mrs Penny Fleming for her talent with the choreography and music. We are very grateful and lucky to have Mrs Fleming volunteer each week to teach our students their routine. Also, thanks to the talented Melinda Holme for the fantastic costumes. Our little school is going to shine and sparkle (literally)!

BEANIE FOR BRAIN CANCER Get your beanies ready for Friday 2nd August. We will be holding a fundraising day for the Mark Hughes Foundation. Students can wear a beanie and make a donation. The P&C are also selling fruit cups and beanie cupcakes, as well as having a jellybean bar guessing competition. All money will go to the MHF, which is currently providing support to one of families in the school, so please support this and donate generously.

STEM STUDENT SURVEY Thank you for assisting your children with completing this survey. In total 20 students responded. The information will be used as part of School Plan evaluation and for planning in 2020. Here is a snapshot of the results.

SCHOOL GATES – Important Message Just a reminder that we all work together to ensure that the school gates are closed at all times.

Some ways we ask you to ensure that this gate is closed include:

* Turning to check that is has fully closed behind you.

* Always accompanying your children in and out of the gate. Children are not to enter and leave by themselves.

* Closing the back gate to Marshall Street (even if it is open when you walk in)

Please help with keeping our school a safe place for our kids and their siblings.

EARN and LEARN We have ordered some new equipment for our playground including large games, a teepee to read in and lovely new sand and water play toys. Thank you for collecting the stickers and supporting our school.

P&C SERVICES HEALTHY CANTEEN STRATEGY We are very close to submitting our menu check application for the NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy. We will be looking to change a few menu items to ensure that we meet the criteria of three quarters everyday food and drinks and swapping any occasional foods to a similar food with a Healthy Star Rating of 3.5 stars or more. ENGAGEMENT WITH THE STUDENTS – FRUIT SALAD CUPS ARE COMING! At the last P&C meeting Mrs Hughes presented a survey of healthy options that the students have undertaken for a special canteen once a month, with the clear winner being the ‘fruit salad cups’. The P&C are excited to deliver this at two snack canteens in Term 3, Friday 2 August & Friday 6 September. We look forward to some great feedback from the kids!

UNIFORM SHOP We are expecting our large number of uniforms to be delivered in the next few weeks which should make ordering uniforms much easier for families.

We are also in the process of setting our P&C up with Square which will allow families to order uniforms online and also pay either in person or remotely with a credit card. We will keep you updated of progress but expect this to be up and running this term.

There is an alternative pair of girl’s winter pants on order, as the existing pair are currently discontinued.

There is a wide range of second hand uniforms for the sale in the uniform shop – please feel free to drop in on a Monday morning to see what’s available. If you have any uniforms which no longer fit your children and are still in good condition, please drop them off to the uniform shop where we can give them a new home.
