Dave Livingston won the 2019 Vision Auto Angler of the Years

Series at Chaumont Bay with 20.20 lbs. Dave said, “They say everything happens for a reason, maybe this proves it. On Monday the week before the tournament I was in Chaumont Bay practicing, and about 8:00 am the engine lower unit just blew. No warning, didn’t hit anything, just a slight whining noise as I went on plane. Anyway it took 4 hours to get back to the launch using the trolling motor. So my partner Bob McEneaney and I decided to fish as we made our way. Some of the spots we found on the way actually paid off during the tournament, go figure. Thanks to Sutter Marine for the quick turnaround on the repair and getting me back on the water quickly. Practice was actually pretty good, just about everywhere we went, from out in the lake to inside the bay. I had one spot on the lake that was holding big fish, so I was determined to get there Saturday. I arrived there first thing despite a slightly bumpy ride, but most of the fish had lockjaw, and we wasted too much time there trying to find them. I bounced around to other spots, but I finally came

back into the bay around noon. I think at that time I only had 3 fish and Liane Livote had 2. Went to one of the spots I had found the week before when my engine blew, and low and behold we each filled out a limit with minutes to spare. Not great weights, but better than what we had several hours earlier. So Sunday I had to make the choice of going back out into the lake, or staying in the bay. I had one spot in the bay that I had not gone to yet, so I decided to give it a try before venturing out into the lake. Good choice! I probably caught my limit on my first 7 casts, then had a 20 pound limit by 7:00 am. Then I got bit off by a pike, and everything shut down. I tried several spots in the bay the rest of the day and probably caught 10 more fish, none of which helped me. I did lose 2 fish that would have probably given me a couple more pounds, and that was very frustrating, because I didn’t think I had enough to win. Especially when Kyle Sweers pulled out his first 3 fish to weigh for lunker. All my fish Sunday were caught on either a drop shot, a weighted Senko, or a Ned rig on 15 pound braid with 10 pound leader, G-Loomis 6’ 10” drop shot spinning rods. Potato chips and bacon jerky for lunch (doctor’s orders).

Jake Zaremski took 2nd Place with 19.63 lbs. Jake said, “After a tough Day 1, I decided to pick the area I had my biggest bites and slowly pick it apart all day. The area I was fishing was a large area with sand, scattered rock and random patches of grass mixed in. During practice, when it was calm and sunny, I was able to find more fish shallow but less willing to bite. The west wind during the tournament seemed to push the fish out of the shallow water and into deeper water. The day started out with a rough, half hour ride out into to Lake Ontario. Unfortunately this area was totally exposed to the wind so Doug Walker and I were bouncing

around in 4-5 foot waves for the first half of the day. At about 9:00 A.M. the bite seemed to shut off so we moved out to deeper water and went on to catch fish steadily the second half of the day. All but one of our fish came in 30 to 50 feet of water. The best way for me to fish that depth was with a heavy dropshot. Doug had a really great fish catch I had to share. We were drifting along and all I hear is “Jake, I think I got one.” By the time I turn around the fish had swam up from 35 feet and all I see about a 4.5 lbs smallmouth tail-walking on the top of a 4 foot wave pretty far from the boat. Midway through the battle, the boat dropped to the bottom of the wave and we saw the smallmouth next to us in the middle of the wave. Luckily, we were able to net the fish and get it in the livewell safely. Thanks Doug for putting up with battling those waves all day! Thanks everyone who helped with setting up, run and tear down the weigh in. Another great RBM tournament!”

Mark Harold finished in 3rd Place with a five fish limit. Mark said, I returned to the same area I fished on day one and continued

throwing the one ounce Lou Dog spinnerbait in bus color. There was a very noticeable difference in the fish that were biting compared to the first day. On day one I caught at least 10 largemouths and had a limit in the first hour that had four largemouths in it. Today I caught zero largemouth in the exact same area. The number of overall bites was substantially

less initially, that was mainly because the eager largemouth didn’t participate. The smallmouth bite rate was probably close to day one, it just seemed slower because they were the only ones contributing to the total. I had my limit at 8:10 AM. As the day went on the bite was steady, meaning one every so often. I did have two occasions where I culled, stood up and got another on the next cast. Every once in a while I would get one of those solid four pound class fish and gradually culled up to my total of 19.59 pounds to finish third. According to my scale, four of my smallmouth were just over four pounds and the fifth was three and a half. I didn’t have that one big smallmouth that was needed to move up to the top of the leader board. I caught in the neighborhood fifteen bass during the day and had better weight than I had anticipated getting in the bay.”

Kyle Sweers took 4th Pace and lunker on Day 2. Kyle brought 19.04 lbs. to the scales anchored by a 5.64 lb. smallie. Kyle said, “On Sunday at Chaumont Bay I ran to my first spot and was surprised to find that I had it to myself, given my late boat number. I had fished the area the entire day on Saturday with my non-boater Fred Ratcliffe. Between Fred and I, we caught probably 20 keepers, and there were other boats around taking fish as well, but I had enough confidence in the area to at least start there on day 2. The conditions were ideal for throwing top water and it did not take long before I boated my first fish that was over 5 pounds (I won’t forget the sight a 5+ pound smallie busting clear out of the water to take my BD popper anytime soon). Despite numerous blowups, I never ended up connecting with another top water bite. I put the popper down and fished a dropshot the remainder of the day. I was fishing in 2-7 feet of water with a hard bottom that had scattered grass and boulders. I worked the area thoroughly pitching my dropshot around ROD BROWN

the scattered structure. I heard a lot of guys talk about losing fish at the boat, and it was no different for me. I hooked up with a fish that was at least 3 pounds, but was not able to land it as it spit the hook right at the boat. Not long after that I got bit again, and was able to land this one, and drop my second 5+ pound fish in the box. I continued to work the area and put two 1 pounders in the box. The bite died and I decided that the area was completely tapped after a day and a half of heavy pressure. I went to check a few history spots that I had, just to find them occupied by other boats. I ended up in an area that I found in practice on Thursday. It was 15 – 18 feet of water with scattered boulders. With the wind I was able to drift perfectly over the area, and in short order I was hooked up, and boated my third 5+ pounder. At this point I realized that with 2, potentially even just 1 more good bite, I could win, I needed to get rid of at least one of the 1 pounders I had in the box. I set my drift up again and hooked right back up with a fish that was at least 2.5 pounds, but it would spit the hook again right at the boat. I repeated this drift many more times, hooking up almost every other drift,

but with nothing that would cull, they were all cookie cutter dinks. With about a half hour left to fish, I returned to my first area in hopes that maybe it had reloaded after a few hours, but I was not able to get another bite. It was disappointing to lose two fish that could have won me the tournament, but at the end of the day I was happy to drop my biggest bag to date on the scales, as well as break my personal best smallmouth 3 times!!”

After a Day 1 win, Jon Skirment took 5th on Day 2 with 18.41 lbs.

Jon said, “I felt I had to back up the day 1 win by continuing to fish out of my boat with trolling motor only. I went back to the same spot as day 1 and continued to fish the Alabama rig. I could tell after the first hour that the bite had changed. But I kept fishing it while mixing in a few other techniques. I still got about 4 bites on the A-rig throughout the day. Moving baits seemed to be the only thing they would react to, but they just weren’t committing to it good.

Finally at the end of the day with 20 minutes left, I decided to pick up the jig that had been sitting on my deck all day. I boated my 5th and 6th fish to fill my limit and cull once, but then ran out of time. They ended up being my 2 biggest fish as well, which help boost me to 18+LB. and secure 5th.

A special thanks to Tige Noni for the ride in to weigh-in, and tow back to launch after the tourney.”

In 6th Place Rod Brown caught 18.08 lbs.

Rod said, “After 15 hours of practice at Conesus, I only caught 4 keepers.

On tournament day I was determined to junk spot fish. I targeted specific structure & cover. I had specific rock and drain spots, specific docks and specific little stretches of vegetation. My spots ranged in depth from 1 to 10 feet. I used a drop shot followed by a wacky weighted Senko for all 8 of my keeper fish. I did not have a specific time, I caught my fish

through the day.”

Jim Bianchi caught 16.99 lbs. to round out the Top Seven.
