NOTES FROM THE EDITORby Mike Blessing [ [email protected] ]

Republicans for a Third Party?Jay Vandersloot has been forwarding me comments from Republicans that lead me to believe that they are becoming unsettled towards their own party's march towards socialism for the sake of “national greatness”:

From: <unknown>Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2006

“There is certainly no shortage of things to complain about when it comes to the Republican Party. There is very little, if any, resemblance of the congressional Republicans of 2006 as compared to the Republicans who took control of the House of Representatives in 1994. Gone is the revolutionary zeal to reduce the power, influence and size of government and to return power and responsibility to the people. The Republicans of 1994 have been largely replaced by a party of big government and big spending.

“Some are suggesting that the Republicans may lose their control of the House of Representatives in this year's mid-term elections. That would be absolutely fine with me. They have done little to deserve the majority position they hold.”

The funny thing is that while the writer above is dissatisfied with the Republican Party, this person is more afraid of the Democrats taking over from the GOP. As if Socialist Party B was any better than Socialist Party A.

It gets better – this from a second writer:

"I would really like to see a strong and influential third or even a fourth party. The more ideas that make it to the MSM [mainstream media (?) – MWB] the better for all of us."

This writer, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have much if any problem with the Republicans' socialist tendencies, so long as the Republican Party stays on top:

Of course the way the democrat party is going nuts maybe Libertarians can be the second party. I plan to see the Republicans 1) hold to conservative values 2) are open to liberal values when appropriate (we are the party of Lincoln) and 3) we remain the number one party as long as possible.

As for any semblance of “conservatism,” it would help if the GOP-NM gave the boot to big-spending regulators like Heather Wilson and “Saint Pete” Domenici.

As for “we are the party of Lincoln,” libertarians know that Lincoln was the American Lenin – www.lneilsmith.org/abelenin.html.

Despite whatever misgivings he had, Lincoln sanctioned the killing of 620,000 people via the War of Northen Aggression to prevent the southern states from seceding from the “Union.” Someone to look up to, right?

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."– Anne Frank, diarist

NM BoE Recertifies LPNM as Minor Party! On March 24th, 2006, the Director of the NM Bureau of Elections (BoE) told Richard Winger that enough petition signatures had been validated to qualify the LPNM as a minor party recognized by the State of New Mexico.

This was a major hurdle, on which a number of other things were dependent, the first of which being our ability to nominate candidates and have then be able to be on the ballot as Libertarians.

There are some more things that are contingent on our having re-gained minor party status. More on that subject next month.

LPNM 2006 Annual State Convention a SuccessThe LPNM 2006 Annual State Convention on March 10th through 12th was a success. I received numerous comments, both at the convention, and afterwards in emails, stating how pleased they were with, both with the speakers we had, and that “we got some things done that needed to be done.”

We had a good slate of speakers, and we nominated three candidates for state-wide races, approved changes to the LPNM Constitution and Bylaws that brought them into alignment and compliance with NM State law, and selected delegates to the LP National Convention coming up the first weekend in July (starts on June 30th).

If you are planning on attending the LP National Convention, you need to start making your reservations.

Candidates for Upcoming ElectionsAs I said, above, we nominated three candidates for state-wide races.

• US Senate – Siebert (Bert) Ickler• State Treasurer – Stan Raczynski• Commissioner of Public Lands – John Pfersich

If any of the County Affiliates have also nominated anyone, please get information to me, preferable by email, to [email protected]. If you don’t have email, you can call me at 505-362-1733, to pass on the information. The time is closing fast. If you have not yet held your County Convention, you need to take care of this, so you can get your candidates nominated. Let’s not wait until the last moment. Let’s take action NOW!

LPNM Treasurer ResignsStan Raczynski has tendered his resignation as LPNM Treasurer, effective not later than June 10th. We appreciate everything Stan has done for the LPNM, and I would like to personally thank him for his work the last couple of years. This does not, however, mean Stan is resigning from the LPNM. To the contrary, Stan is still an active member, and is our candidate for the office of NM State Treasurer.

It will take some doing to “fill Stan’s shoes,” but we thank Richard Obergfell for agreeing to step up to the challenge. This leaves his position on the LPNM CenCom (District 2 Representative, Seat A) vacant, and we are soliciting recommendations for someone to replace him on the CenCom. If you have any recommendations, please contact me, preferable by email, to [email protected]. If you don’t have email, you can call me at 505-362-1733, to pass on the information.

While we’re at it, we also have vacancies for two other seats on the CenCom, and we are looking for recommendations for people to represent these districts, also. These other two vacant seats are for following.

• District 1, Seat A• District 3, Seat B

Now, let’s educate ourselves on the next of the planks from our LP National Platform, so we will be better able to present the principles to others.

I. Individual Rights and Civil Order9. Government and Mental Health

The Issue – Individuals are forcibly medicated or denied medication, not based on medical need, but based rather on a social agenda as enforced by government.

The Principle – Medication must be voluntary.

Solutions – We oppose the involuntary commitment of any person to or involuntary treatment in a mental institution. We strongly condemn Involuntary Outpatient Commitment (IOC), where the patient is ordered to accept treatment, or else be committed to a mental institution and forcibly treated. We oppose government pressure requiring parents to obtain counseling or psychiatric drugs for their children. We also oppose forced treatment for the elderly, the head-injured, or those with diminished capacity. We are against the invasion of people's homes and privacy by health officials or law enforcement to either require or deny drug taking.

Transitional Action – We advocate an end to the spending of tax money for any program of psychiatric, psychological, or behavioral research or treatment. We favor an end to the acceptance of criminal defenses based on "insanity" or "diminished capacity" which absolve the guilty of their responsibility.

"In every man’s life there lies latent energy. There is, however, a spark that, if kindled, will set the whole being afire, and he will become a human dynamo, capable of accomplishing almost anything to which he aspires." – James Cash Penney, retailer

V FOR VENDETTAwww.vforvendetta.com

People should not be afraid of their governments.Governments should be afraid of their people.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (Hugo Weaving) known only as “V.” Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

What, you haven't seen this movie yet? What are you doing, watching the grass grow?!

I saw it for the first time at the Cottonwood Starport – it was worth the Ø6.50 that I paid to get in. It would have been worth it if I had paid the full prime-time price of about Ø10 – it's that good of a movie.

Alan Moore, the writer of the original graphic novel has disowned the movie. Still, I'll go on record that the movie is good enough to spend that Ø10 on. (Those of the LINO persuasion who are aghast at some of what the movie version of V does will go catatonic at what the book version does. Don't say you weren't warned.) For those interested in reading the book, turn your web browser to DC Comics' Vertigo line:

Or just go to the Wikipedia page for both book and movie:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_for_vendetta

The best divergence between the book and the movie was the talk show segment, which is a bit featuring a V-lookalike, derived in part from the Benny Hill Show.

The movie received three reviews in The Libertarian Enterprise:

V for Vendetta – 3 and a half out of 4 stars by Lady Liberty

www.tinyurl.com/md8af

Lady Liberty gave V For Vendetta high marks, though was a bit squeamish about some of the gorier parts. (I had no such problems – I saw Darth Vader cut Luke Skywalker's hand off when I was nine.) Still, the links to reviews by others were helpful.

V For Vendetta – A Review by Thomas Creasingwww.tinyurl.com/lde2z

Creasing seemed mostly disappointed that the movie didn't do the book justice. That's a standard complaint against book-to-movie translations – Frank Herbert was afraid of that when Dune was made into a movie in 1984 by Dino DeLaurentis. I think the Wachowski brothers could have done a little better with V for Vendetta, but still, the movie was pretty good in itself.

V For Vendetta Review A Pretty Decent Anti-State Film,

Though Not a Very Libertarian Oneby Mark Quon

www.tinyurl.com/sy8m9

Quon wrote a review that was largely positive, yet he says that the movie could have done more with the “terrorist vs. freedom-fighter” theme.

Another reviewer takes up the question that Quon wanted V For Vendetta to address:

A sampling of Shaffer's comments:

• Suffice it to say that, from a libertarian/anarchistic perspective, this film is for real!

• I have no doubt that this film will generate “terror” in the minds of those who regard the domination of others either as some inherent right or as an inevitable necessity for social order.

Sometimes it helps to see who's against something to get an idea if it's any good. Keeping that in mind, here are a couple of links to negative reviews of the movie:

Paul Gessing of the Rio Grande Foundation[ www.riograndefoundation.org ]

As there weren't many county chairs present, we moved on to Victor Milán's interactive speech, titled “Freedom – What's In It For Me?”

Local science-fiction writer Victor Milán[ www.victormilan.com ]

Victor said that first, he's concerned with achieving happiness, and that freedom from the State is part of what he considers necessary as being happy in life. Victor went on to say that sometimes we can get too argumentative when presenting Liberty to the masses, and that can be a big turn-off to lots of people. Victor took plenty of questions from the audience during his speech, as he told the audience to feel free to ask them.

(I note here that Bill Koehler and I were videotaping the speakers, and those speeches should be available for webcast or in DVD format shortly.)

STATE CONVENTION REPORTby Mike Blessing [ [email protected] ]

Friday – Sunday, 10-12 March 2006

We started off our annual state convention in Rio Rancho with the usual pre-opening mixer on Friday night. There were still people arriving as State Chair Jay Vandersloot was giving his welcoming address. After fixing some computer problems, Jay introduced Dorsey Glenn from Roswell, who gave the assembled members a synopsis of the recent reorganization effort. Simply put, things don't look good, as the numbers go. Both state and national memberships are down by about 60% since 1999, with a corresponding drop in revenues.

Dorsey then moved on to give us a summary of how the “McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002” affects the LPNM. Most of the Act's provisions come into play after the LPNM gives more than Ø1000 worth of support to a candidate for federal office. The really bad news here – it doesn't matter if that support is financial in nature, or in the “in-kind” form of support, such as publicity. Even a mention here in NML counts as “in-kind” support. The “upshot” of this is that the LPNM can escape the BS reporting requirements of BCRA-2002 by not running any federal candidates, such as for U.S. House or Senate or for President. (This was the intent of the Act, to kill off third parties and protect those already in office, hence its nickname here – the Incumbent Protection Act of 2002.)

The next morning, Jay Vandersloot opened the convention with a short address. He gave us a short synopsis of the LPNM's current status with the State of New Mexico, and of the State Convention.

Jay Vandersloot addressing the State Convention

Since our LNC Representative, George Squyres, was unable to make it, Jay introduced Paul Gessing of the Rio Grande Foundation. Paul gave us a short biography of himself, and told us what his mission with the RGF was – to promote small-”l” libertarianism in New Mexico. Paul focused on the recent veto by Gov. Richardson of the legislation that would have limited local government usage of eminent domain.

Page 6: New Mexico Liberty, April 2006

when deployed for crowd control purposes. Rubber bullets are no different in this respect than the wooden “baton” rounds, or the “bean bag” shotgun rounds that cops in the States have grown fond of lately. At close range (less than 5m (16 ft)), these “non-lethal” rounds can be very deadly, especially if they impact a person in the head, or if the person being hit wasn't in the greatest of health to begin with.

Chuck ended his presentation by quoting an Irish Nationalist: “We were Britain's first colony, and we will be her last.”

After Chuck finished his presentation and departed, we took a short break and then proceeded to the annual business session.

(The full minutes of the business session are available in PDF format in the Files section of [LPNM-biz] and [LPNM-Activists].)

Jay opened the business session with a State of the State Party address, explaining the difficulties in dealing with National and the State of New Mexico's Bureau of Elections. Then Jay moved on to recognize those who have been active in the LPNM, such as Dorsey Glenn, Ron Bjornstad, the San Juan Gang, etc.

After the recognitions were completed, we moved on to the reports. After my short report as Secretary, Stan Raczynski gave his report as Treasurer. It was at this point that he made his intent to resign publicly known, effective 10 June 2006. (The full letter is included in the business session minutes.) Stan noted that the LPNM really has nothing to fear from the BCRA-2002 if we play our cards right.

After reports from the county chairs (too few were present!), we moved to Constitutional and Bylaw amendments, where there was a bit of controversy over the dues proposal from the San Juan County LP. We nominated candidates for public office and to the national convention (30 June – 3 July 2006 in Portland, Oregon).

Following the business session, we had an abbreviated reception in the hospitality suite, with the BCLP convention occurring concurrently. After that, we returned to the banquet room for dinner and Bill Koehler's keynote speech – “Socialism – America's Official State Religion.”

Bill Koehler giving his keynote speech

John Dendahl of the Rio Grande Foundation[ www.riograndefoundation.org ]

John Dendahl of the Rio Grande Foundation spoke after Victor, and told us of how he came to small-”l” libertarianism in the mid-1990's, along with Governor Gary Johnson. He explained that government should focus on protecting the rights of people, as opposed to their morals. Dendahl elaborated about how he came to see the War on Some Drug Users as antithetical to the small-government stance that some Republicans like to talk about, and his public stance in favor of drug law reform, as well as the hard time his Republican “allies” gave him over that issue. In particular, he mentioned Frank and Ramsey Gorham, formerly in charge of the Bernalillo County Republican Party.

Dendahl had me puzzled for a bit, expressing support for G.W. Bush in that Bush is a “moral man” and that Bush is “fighting the terrorists.” We'll have to disagree slightly on that part.

We went our separate ways for lunch (I stayed in the banquet room and did some updating on the BCLP website). As usual, we stuck to LST and reconvened a little after 1:30 PM.

At that point, Chuck McLaughlin of the Irish Freedom Committee [ www.irishfreedomcommittee.net ] arrived for his presentation, “What Happens When They Take Your Guns Away?” Prior to starting, he told us that he would have to leave as soon as he was done speaking, due to another event that day – see www.tinyurl.com/jexkv for details there.

Chuck gave us an in-detail description of what life is like in “Northern Ireland,” or as the Nationalists there say, “the Occupied Six Counties.” Chuck told us of people of the Nationalist / Catholic persuasion being routinely abused by the British-sponsored authorities and paramilitaries, such as the “Ulster Defense Association.” (I will admit that, prior to meeting Chuck as he made a guest appearance on The Weekly Sedition, I had bought into the lamestream snoozemedia's line about the IRA and Sinn Fein being Marxist terrorists.)

Part of Chuck's speech dealt with the supposed “nonlethal” rubber bullets employed by British forces in the Six Counties, and how these bullets have led to quite a few fatalities when used at close range, for example,

Page 7: New Mexico Liberty, April 2006

Bill noted that any law, regulation that covers peaceful activity by its participants, i.e., anything that doesn't violate the Zero Aggression Principle, is not only socialism, but the institution of laws based upon one person's religion upon someone else. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is supposed to guarantee freedom from state-backed religion (see his article in New Mexico Liberty, March 2006, “America's Two-Party System,” for details.)

Bill went on to propose a legal defense system to counter such religion as enacted into law – more details will be available shortly for those interested. He then went on to do a one-man comedy sketch based on Abbott and Costello, where Lou Costello is testifying before the U.S. Senate:

Senator: Mr. Costello, what do you do for a living?

Costello: I cannot answer as I might incriminate myself.

Senator: Excuse me?

Costello: You tell me what's illegal and I'll tell you if I can tell you.

(Errors in paraphrasing are mine)

After giving the keynote address, Bill went on to run the annual fundraising auction, and raised a few FRNs for the LPNM.

Bill Koehler running the auction

We recessed for the evening, to return for a panel on the LPNM's future in the morning at the hospitality suite. Jay Vandersloot ran the interactive panel from his laptop, where we discussed strategy and tactics, as well as groups to target for advertising.

Following the planning panel, we had a short Central Committee meeting. At that point, Richard Obergfell volunteered to fill in the Treasurer's spot for Stan Raczynski. (Full minutes are available in the Files sections of [LPNM-Biz] and [LPNM-Activists].)

FREE STATE PROJECT – NEW MEXICOby Mike Blessing [ [email protected] ]

We've all seen how the Free State Project has given new life to the libertarian movement. Already, with only 400 people having moved to New Hampshire, they're starting to have an effect.

The original Free State Project was proposed by Dr. Jason Sorens, then a graduate student in political science at Yale University. Sorens wrote an article to The Libertarian Enterprise in January, 2006.

The plan was to get 20,000 libertarian-minded people to sign up, get them to move to one low-population state. After moving in, they would get active in politics and start rolling back the State.

www.freestateproject.org

The FSP has spawned a few copycat operations:

• FSP (original, 7000 participants, 400 on the ground in NH now)

• FSP Wyoming(Wyoming, unknown number of participants but a core of hard-core activists centered around Kenneth W. Royce AKA Boston T. Party)

• Free West Alliance (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, unknown number of participants

One aspect of all three efforts is that being based in northern states, they're cutting themselves off from people wanting a warmer climate. Since New Mexico is one of the less-populated states with a warmer climate, it's only natural that a Free State Project would be established concerning The Land of Entrapment.

groups.yahoo.com/group/Freedom-in-NM

The pros of New Mexico from a libertarian standpoint:

• The climate, as noted above.• The varied landscapes• The general live-and-let-live attitude of the

residents.• A strong pro-gun mentality

The cons of New Mexico for libertarians:

• A history of rapacious, greedy, and enthusiastic taxation,

• Grinding poverty, • A multigenerational welfare state mentality• Huge amounts of land owned by Washington DC• Fealty towards Washington DC through the

national labs and Air Force bases

NEW MEXICO LIBERTY – ADMIN NOTESMike Blessing, Editor [ [email protected] ]

If you have news, interesting stories, op-ed pieces, a letter to the editor, or timely information that you think belongs in the newsletter, please send it along. I can be contacted at 505-710-5197, or just send it to email address [email protected].

When sending your submission as an MS Word (or Open Office Text) file, send it single-spaced in 10-pt Arial – like this is. Margins should be half-inch (0.5”) around, with no headers or footers. If you send it in a text-only format, make it clear to me if you want anything in bold type, underlined, in italics, struck-through, different colors, etc. I’m not telepathic here, so help me out.

Graphics (pictures, cartoons, etc.) – send the highest quality graphics you can – email them to me at the address above, and I’ll do what I can to get them in the next issue. In particular, what I want are pictures of YOU the LPNM members, either at LPNM-sponsored events or at other peoples' events.

Submission deadline for the April issue – midnight, Tuesday, 21 March 2006

ArticlesAs for writing your article, It should be concise (no longer than a full page) and topical. A bit of humor helps, especially for op-ed pieces.

What I'm really looking for in the way of articles is what's going on in the LPNM – what YOU the membership are up to in spreading the message. For example, an article about the stupidity, insanity and evil of the UN might get put in, depending on available space and the quality of the article. A group of LPNM members counter-protesting the raising of a UN flag by the city council WILL get put in, and probably will get first priority.

Letters to the EditorThe editor will publish letters on a space-available basis. The same standards apply for letters that apply for articles – keep them concise and topical. The editor will NOT publish letters in response to other letters – New Mexico Liberty is NOT a message board – use [LPNM-discuss] or [LPNM-forum] for that purpose.

Editorial ViewpointThe basis for libertarian thought is the Zero Aggression Principle –

A libertarian is someone who believes that no human being has the right - under any circumstances - to initiate force against another human being, nor to threaten, incite or delegate its initiation.

New Mexico Liberty holds that Libertarian candidates and officeholders at all levels of government should refrain from advocating new or more restrictive laws, new or more expensive spending programs, or new or higher taxes. To paraphrase from the medical profession, “First, do no harm.”

LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF NEW MEXICOSPRING FUNDRAISER

We’re in the middle of 2006, and it’s up to us to make it a good year. We’ll have quite a few State Representative seats whose incumbents will run unopposed this year, if the LPNM doesn’t step up to the plate and offer candidates against them. It doesn’t matter if they are Democrats or Republicans, or BOYN-A and BOYN-B as I call them. Some principled opposition is in order, if no other reason than to keep them a little honest. Just running against the unopposed has value, as we’ll be seen as The Opposition Party.

The time to get started on these candidacies is NOW. We all know that SOS Becky and AG Patsy Madrid like to play around with filing dates, so the earlier you get started collecting signatures, the better. At the same time, start on the other stuff – research, brainstorming, and a little under-the-table fundraising.

Which brings me to my point – as someone (I forget exactly who) once said, “Money is the mother’s milk of politics.” All of the activities involved with campaigning – advertising the candidate, printing up literature – cost money. And the LPNM itself needs cash on hand, to cover operating expenses – otherwise, try running as an “independent,” where the signature requirements are THREE TIMES as high as those for a “minor party” candidate. That’s right – more piles of Federal Reserve Notes is what I’m asking for here. Don’t send it to me, send it to the LPNM.

We all know that it has been a tough few years, and that you have been hit up hard to contribute to the LP's national operations. But if you can spare a dime or spare some time, would you please consider one or more of the following:

• Make your best contribution to LPNM. We pledge to use your contribution to promote the cause of Liberty to the best of our ability. You can use the one time contribution, or use the convenient monthly pledge form on the back page.

• Contact your county chair and make a donation to your county campaign kitty, or find out what else you can do to help. If you have no county chair, contact Jay Vandersloot. Maybe he’ll appoint you!

• Sign up one new caucus member each month. You must ask them point blank!

• When your county chair calls for people to run for elected office, don’t be afraid to throw your hat in the ring, especially for State Representative. The signature-gathering requirements aren’t that high, and are rather easy to complete just by walking around your neighborhood.

Thanks,

Mike Blessing,New Mexico Liberty Editor [ [email protected] ]
