ALL ABOUT NNLC
NNLC Charter
CLUB PURPOSE
The purpose of the New Neighbors League
Club (NNLC) is to bring together the new
neighbors of the area so they may meet and
become friends while adjusting to new
surroundings. The Club is a not-for-profit
social organization with a variety of interest
groups and special activities, including monthly
luncheons and speakers.
HISTORY
NNLC is the official social club of New
Neighbors League, Inc. (NNLI), which was
founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1939 by Theodore
R. Briggs. Out of the business of greeting new
residents grew a recognized need for a social
organization allowing newcomers to meet
others who were also new to the area.
Theodore’s wife, Bunny, lived in many cities
throughout the United States and knew the
loneliness associated with moving into
unfamiliar areas. With the aid of the Ohio
Federated Women’s Club, the Constitution and
By-Laws for NNLC were drafted. The first
chapter was chartered in Cincinnati, Ohio in
1943. As the greeting service operations were
established, new club chapters were founded.
Dayton was home for New Neighbors League
until 1986 when Corporate and Club
Headquarters were moved to Atlanta, Georgia
and Cheryl Beaudreault assumed the position
of National President. Currently, there are
fourteen operations nationwide. Each chapter
operates independently within established
guidelines and under the direction of a local
Board of Directors and a Club Director.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in NNLC is open to anyone who
is new to the area (less than 1 year) , has been
visited by an area representative and invited to
a prospective membership function. There is a
one-time membership fee of $25.00 to join
NNLC with transfer privileges to any sister
chapter. You must also subscribe to The Happy
Wanderer ($20.00 fee), our club newsletter, to
be an active member. The annual renewal fee is
$25.00.

Coffee
Moving into a new community can be exciting, overwhelming, and often times, lonely. NNLC can help make the transition easier by helping women find new friends and
activities. If you know of someone new to the area, invite her to join us at the monthly coffee where she can learn more about
everything NNLC has to
offer.
The next coffee is:
Tuesday, September 3,
9:30am at St. Louis County Library, Daniel Boone Branch, 300 Clarkson
Road, Ellisville, MO 63011. Meet in the Red Room. (Parking on the north side (lower end) makes for easier access to meeting
rooms.)

You have to be a special kind of person
to forget to eat!
I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are: eating too much, impulse buying and driving too
fast.
ARE THEY KIDDING? That's my
idea of a perfect day!
I hope all of you wonderful ladies have enjoyed this & had a chuckle or
two!
REMEMBER: LIVE SIMPLY-------

GREETINGS
LADIES:
Well the summer of 2013 is gone. I hope you all had a happy, fun & healthy
summer.
I remember when my 4 children were growing up I was always so ready to see school start again. That meant I had some time to myself & a little peace for a few hours 5 days of the week. I know some of you are still
raising children.
I thought this is a good time for some
funny. GIRLIE WISDOM!!
A friend of mine confused her Valium with her birth control pills....she has 14
kids, but she doesn't really care.
One of life's mysteries is how a 2 pound box of chocolates can make a woman gain
5 pounds.
My mind not only wanders, it sometimes
leaves completely.
The best way to forget your troubles is to
wear tight shoes.
The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don't know what
you are doing, someone else does.
The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body
and your fat are really good friends.
Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today. Where does
the time go?
Sometimes I think I understand everything, and then I second guess
myself.
I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and set
fire to my panties. OUCH!!
Amazing! You hang something in your
closet for a while, and it shrinks 2 sizes!
Skinny people irritate me! Especially when they say things like..."You know
sometimes I forget to eat!" REALLY?
Now, I've forgotten my address, my mother's maiden name and my keys, but
I have never forgotten to eat....
The month of September brings us a wonderful event…. the Member Social. We will be meeting for drinks, delicious appetizers, and socializing on Wednesday, September 25th. We’ve reserved Imogene’s Tea Room in Wildwood for our event. It’s a lovely place and we will have it to ourselves for the evening. Please save the date on your calendar and plan on attending and spending quality time with friends both
old and new.
Also in this issue of the HW is
our call for volunteers for the Tinsel
Trail event in December. We are in
need of three houses to decorate, two
ladies to act as co-chairs for the event,
and lots of volunteers to help ready those
houses for viewing. Last year many of
us enjoyed the camaraderie of working
on decorating. We learned how to make
bows, candy cane name plates, wreaths,
etc. We also met new friends and were
able to enjoy four beautifully decorated
homes. Check the article in this issue
for pictures and comments from past
Tinsel Trail events. In the meantime,
enjoy the first days of autumn and I hope
to see you at an NNLC event soon.
In Fun and Friendship, Gay Hampton President NNLC

September has arrived and the season for our golfing ladies is slowly coming to a close while the season for the bowlers is on the
horizon. Fall may change our weather, and some of our activities, but it doesn’t change our interest in planning
events with our friends.

TINSEL TRAIL
RENEE’S HOUSE WAS ON 2012 TOUR
“It was truly an exciting experience to
volunteer my house last year for the Tinsel Trail
Tour. It helped me get out of my Christmas decorating rut to see how other members could
envision my house with my decorations, some
borrowed ones, and some new items. Having my house on the tour also gave me the
opportunity to meet other members of the club that were in different groups than I was in just
because they had volunteered to decorate my
house. I provided a salad or sandwich for lunch on the days that they came to decorate (which
isn’t a requirement) and that was a small price
to pay to have my house decorated, the mess cleaned up, and then to enjoy my decorations
throughout the holidays.” Renee Hatlelid
NNLC HOLIDAY HOME TOUR
TINSEL TRAIL
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2013
We are in the planning stages of the Tinsel Trail house tour and are in need of
co-chairpersons to oversee this event. Three homes are still needed for this fun
seasonal club fundraiser. If you love having your home decorated for the holidays,
please consider offering YOUR HOME to be on the tour this year. We have many enthusiastic members who are willing to volunteer their time, talents, and decorations to
help make your home a holiday vision. The money raised from Tinsel Trail goes to our
Care and Share Committee for use in charitable causes.

incredible and changed these ideas. I saw my home

QUILT OF VALOR
As many of you remember from last year, Joy Ellen Kauffman decided to make a quilt to donate to an organization dedicated to offering support to our veterans. Many of our NNLC members participated in that project and the completed quilt was sent to The Wounded Warrior Project, a nationally recognized organization serving service men and women “who have incurred service-connected injuries or illness on or after September 11, 2001”. In June Joy Ellen received the following letter from the Department of Veterans
Affairs:
Dear Ms. Kauffman:
On behalf of the VA St. Louis HCS-JC Division patients and staff, we would like to extend our appreciation to you for your donation of a Quilt of Valor. Your thoughtfulness reflects the concern that you feel for our Veterans and for the service they provided to all of us while in service to our country. Without your support, we could not provide for the smaller niceties that make hospitalization more bearable. Your thoughtfulness also reflects the concern and compassion that our community feels for our Veterans.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely, Kevin J. Riley
Voluntary Service Assistant
CARE AND SHARE
Our Care and Share project for this fall is to collect toys and wrapping paper for Santa's Helpers, a 100% volunteer organization that has been delivering presents to families for over 40 years. Each child receives at least five gifts, one of which is a stocking filled with smaller gifts and one of which is an age appropriate book, the rest toys, or clothes if requested. Everyone in the family receives presents. Last year, Santa's Helpers delivered 26,000 gifts to over 2,000 children and their families. All families served live below the poverty level and for most, the gifts that Santa brings are all they will receive. Members can also help wrap these presents at Santa's Helpers warehouse on Friday, October
18th from 11 to 4. More details to come.

BRA DRIVE
We are SO excited to announce the incredible success of our bra drive for Free The Girls: Fight Human Trafficking! With the help of our rock-star donors we collected over 2,500 bras to help fight human trafficking! HUGE thanks for everyone’s support. You can still contribute. They would welcome as many bras as are sent since this will be an ongoing need for these women. You can mail bras directly to the following
address:
Free The Girls
1552 Pioneer Trail
Chesterton, IN 46304
Their website is www.freethegirls.org
Our New Neighbors members contributed 4 dozen of those bras. Considering we only had 18 members present at the June
luncheon, I was very pleased. Thanks to all for supporting this
worthy cause.

A nyone New By You?
Here’s a quick cut out to keep in your purse/car/brief case for those times you
come across a new person who you would like to introduce to NNLC.
WELCOME TO ST. LOUIS! I understand you are new to the area and want to say “hello”. When I moved here, I joined a great women’s social organization called
New Neighbors League Club of St.
Louis.
I met other people who had recently moved here, who could answer my many questions and provide me with fun and friendship. There are over 25 activity groups, including:
Bunco • Golf • Tennis • Book Clubs • Wine and Dine • Couples Dining • Ladies’ Evening Out ...The list goes
on and on.
There is a Welcome Coffee on the 1st Tuesday of each month at
St. Louis County Library
Daniel Boone Library Branch
300 Clarkson Rd., Ellisville, MO 63011
(Lower level in the Red Room)
where you can meet other new arrivals . If you are interested, just call our Club Director, Donna Bersett, 314-205-3010 or email her at [email protected]. You can also check out our website www.newneighborsleague.com to learn more.

STL TRIVIA
CROWN CANDY KITCHEN
(1913)
This old-time soda fountain with its booths and juke box that you see in old movies actually exists in St. Louis (for 100 years!). Anyone who has ever had one of their shakes or malts is hooked! “Man vs. Food” on the Food Network filmed a show from here. The host, Adam Richman, tried the challenge of drinking 10 malts in
one sitting. He failed!
They serve their famous BLT as well as chili, sandwiches, hamburgers hot dogs, ice cream and, of course,
candy.
This gem, frozen in time, was started by Greek immigrants Harry Karandzieff and Pete Jugaloff in 1913 and is operated by descendants of Harry’s family. Sheri Iamele and I went to lunch there in July and my chocolate malt was the best I’d ever had! However, if you go, expect a wait. And don’t go after dark...not
such a good neighborhood at night.

SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE
Activities within the club do not have to be on-going ventures. We know a lot of you have expertise in a wide variety of fields. In addition to our activity groups, we’re also looking for people who can
share that expertise in a workshop.
Would you be willing to run a couple hour training session on something you are good at like web page development, or closet organization, or furniture refin-ishing? We would really love to see your skills. The process is the same as that for starting a group. Just send a description of what you plan to cover, a date and loca-tion to meet and some contact information to the Happy Wanderer Editor. Be sure to give people enough advance notice so
they can RSVP to you.
We all have hidden talents. Care to
share yours with us?

EDITOR’S PICK
Dave and I had lunch here in late July—a perfect day to eat outside. The sky was blue and the clouds were fluffy. It’s in Defiance, a beautiful drive (20 minutes from Wildwood). It is in the
rolling hills overlooking the Missouri Valley and the 8 mile drive on Rt. 94 from I-64 is lovely. As we drove up the drive, I was impressed. The grounds were beautiful and we loved the patio seating. Unlike other wineries (I don’t even drink wine!) it’s unusual because of the food it offers. Most wineries mainly offer wine, some cheese, maybe some desserts. Here they offer a lovely place to eat, a nice lunch, and wines from all over the world to enjoy. Lunches ranged from around $7.50-$9.00. I ordered a Santa Fe Salad with pulled pork on it. It came with a sweet, moist, cornbread muffin. It also had some sort of ranch dressing with it and was great. We didn’t have dessert but they looked good. They have indoor seating if it rains. It’s a 15 minute drive from Boone’s Crossing (Take I-64/40 west to Rt. 94 south. Go 8 miles, it’s on the right.. 2711 S. Hwy 94, Defiance, MO (636) 798-2288.
