Padre’s Pen ~Corpus Christi

As we continue our liturgical journey out of the Easter Season and into Ordinary Time, we get to celebrate the extraordinary grace

of God almighty in the Solemn Feast of Corpus Christi; the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.

This feast gives special honor, praise, and worship to Our Lord in the Eucharistic species. As early as 448 AD we can see in Church calendars a feast known as Natalis Calicis (Birth of the Chalice). This institution of the Holy Eucharist by our Lord is celebrated during Holy Week on Maundy Thursday. It is a time in the liturgical year where the faithful direct their thoughts more to our Lord’s Passion than to the worship due to Him in the Eucharist.

By the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century there was still no special feast in the Church calendar to honor our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. During this time, it was an Augustinian nun who, after a vision indicating our Lord’s desire for such a feast, engaged with her bishop. The Solemn Feast Days’ time had come and after some ups and downs in the process, Pope Urban IV published the Papal Bull (encyclical letter) Transitus in 1264 establishing the Solemn Feast to the Universal Church.

I do have to note that the Corpus Christi processions came at some later dates and were promoted by Popes Martin V and Eugene IV

Sadly, due to the COVID-19 issues and because we have Confirmations on Sunday afternoon of Corpus Christi, we will not be able to have our Corpus Christi procession at St. John this year. Normally, we would process around St. John under the canopy used for procession of the Blessed Sacrament. There would be singing and Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament would be offered on each side of the Church. I hope that we will be back to a more normal life next year for this feast and that we can extend this procession to not only St. John, but also between and around all three of our Churches.

We are a Eucharistic people! Jesus gave us (and continues to give us) His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity to sustain us in the life of grace. We believe and trust in His Real Presence; Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Ad Christum per Mariam,

Fr. Theisen

Catholic United Financial, St. John Council:Officers of St. John Catholic United Financial council have agreed that the June meeting will not be held. A decision has been made to go ahead and order the Catholic Calendar for 2021. Officers are asking members for ideas that we could use towards our Grant4Good Project this year. In the past, we have requested the $500 grant to help us with grounds and building clean up. The activity needs to be a service project to our local area/parish. Anyone wishing to submit a project idea, please call or email Renee Brod at [email protected] or (952) 449-1863. “I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Social Justice ProjectAre you accumulating a whole lot of plastic groceries bags at your house? Due to the Coronavirus we have not been able to use our cloth bags. Let’s keep them out of our landfills and put them to good use to make sturdy crocheted mats for the homeless. We will begin by gathering your plastic grocery bags and laying them out flat on a pile. We will then show you how to cut them into strips and loop the strips together to make a ball of plarn. Even kids can do this. Later, early fall, we will get our crocheters busy with a pattern to make the mats.
