25th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2020

All Cleveland Diocesan Parishes and beyond have received a request from the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Most Reverend Jose H. Gomez, Arch-

bishop of Los Angeles for our financial assistance to those who have been impacted by Hurricane Laura and the California wild-fires. Any assistance that is collected will become part of the Bishops Emergency Disaster Fund and be used to support the ef-forts of Catholic Charities USA and/or Catholic Relief Services, the official relief agencies of the U.S. Catholic Church. Archbishop Gomez recognizes that all parish and diocesan activi-ties have been impacted severely by COVID-19 and that asking for money at this time may be more challenging than ever. But Archbishop Gomez relies on the generosity of others and trusts that we will respond as best as we are able. IF you are able to make a donation to the Bishops Emergency

Disaster Fund, please make a check out St. Mary Church and on the MEMO LINE mark Bish-ops Emergency Disaster Fund and drop it in the Church Baskets or in the Parish Office. THANKS!

Faith Formation BEGAN this past Monday and the students

were greeted by a very dedicated staff of Teachers! Mrs. Garr, Fr. Stock and I were on hand to welcome our students BACK and encour-age them to be good and do good this year. Many of our Faith For-mation families have chosen the Homeschool OPTION for their chil-dren and these families stopped in and picked up their materials. All our Faith Formation families are remarkable and so willing to take on the “job” of passing along their faith! Yeah to ALL OF THEM and here’s to a great new school year!

The parents of our 2nd Graders and 8th Graders met last Sunday to learn the process for Sacramental Preparation this year. Yes, it is going to look different, but Mr. & Mrs. Garr are so excited to share their faith in both challenging and exciting ways to our candidates making their First Reconciliation (December 19th), First Communion (May 2nd) and Con-firmation (May 22nd). Everyone is encouraged to attend Mass on the 2nd Sunday of each month at 9:30am and then the 2nd Graders will

have their morning session at 10:30am and the 8th Graders will have their evening session at 6:00pm. As they continue in their faith journey, please PRAY FOR THEM! It’s gonna be a great year!

Fr. Bob Cole will be offering an evening of Faith – the topic of which is The Problem of Suffering. He will reflect on why do bad things happen to good people and how should we handle it when it happens to us! The evening talk sounds like ALL of us could benefit from this reflection. MARK YOUR CALEN-DAR for Thursday October 1st at 7pm in Church OR if you choose to join the reflection from the comfort of your home, it will be Livestreamed on the parish website! The Problem of Suffering and HOW should we handle it! Journey of Faith has had a good response this past week – three students, three teenag-ers and three adults have called and said, “Yes” to the invitation to grow and learn more

about the Faith and/or to become one with us as Roman Catholics. That’s great news! The PLAN, at least as of this writing, is to meet with each of these three “groups” on Monday evenings in the Fr. Garrity Center Meeting Rooms. Deacon Tom will be leading the elementary age children and parents for Baptism, I will be leading the teens, and Fr. Stock will be leading the adults, and of course WITH our catechists and team. AND it’s not limited SO if you’re still interest-ed, “c’mon along and join Journey of Faith.” Call the

Office or one of us, or email or stop us after Mass – we’re here to help! And it looks as if Journey of Faith will begin sometime in October. Again, call if you are interested so we can order materials and schedule rooms and dates! So the Gospel this weekend is all about the generosity of the landowner. He hired la-borers for his vineyard at various times of the day and at the end of the day paid them all, “the usual daily wage.” He paid them according to how much they needed for existence and

NOT according to how much they worked. Those who labored the entire day for, “the usual daily wage” felt CHEATED when it came time to re-ceive their “usual daily wage” BASED on the amount of work they did as COMPARED to the amount of work the last group did. Again, the landowner’s generosity is all about paying ALL of them “the usual daily wage” based on what these laborers needed and not on how much they worked. Being a day laborer was a unstable exist-

ence, because the laborer never knew from day to day if they would work and if they would get paid to feed their families. Being called up to

work the vineyard was a great opportunity for them to get paid and to feed their family. The land-owner knew how much everyone needed and so hired probably MORE laborers than he needed SO THAT he could give them what they needed to live another day. But the all-day laborers felt cheat-ed because they wanted more based on how much they worked. Today’s parable emphasizes the generosity of God’s kingdom in which everyone’s needs are met, regardless of their ability or good fortune. THANKS for everything you DO to help make St. Mary strong and vibrant! Your donations are a REAL BLESSING and I am grateful for all you offer generously to support the church! THANK YOU!

Fr. John

The Knights of Columbus Council #14416 offers our gratitude to the many parishioners of St. Mary of the Falls and St. Mary Par-ish of Berea that partic-ipated in the basket raffle to support the seminarians. A truly successful event that raised over $4,200.00.

We are excited to announce that Father John was the happy recipient of the $100 grand prize, though he didn’t have use of the accompanying stuffed “Dino”. Another ticket was drawn to find “Dino” a happy home.

THANK YOU !

Mother Teresa You can pray while you work. Work doesn’t stop prayer and prayer doesn’t stop work. It requires only that small raising of the mind to Him: I love you God, I trust you, I be-lieve in you, I need you now. Small things like that. These are wonderful ways to pray and wonderful prayers.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovic, Director of Music and Liturgy

MUSIC GUIDELINES FROM THE DIOCESE In August the Cleveland Diocese Office of Worship gave a presentation concerning up to date information concerning public worship and singing during the pandemic. We were also given new guidelines to follow, and I’ll summarize them for you. First, everyone should wear masks, including singers! You will see me in the coming weeks wearing a strange duck like mask- it’s a special type of covering so that I can sing masked without being muffled! Next, the guide-lines recommend no congregational or choral singing, which we have already following. (If there were to be any sing-ing, everyone would have to be at least 6 feet apart and the singing would be severely limited, and less than 30 minutes total. To keep things manageable, I have decided against group singing for now.) A physically distanced can-tor is allowed to sing music, which I have been doing so far, but will hopefully be gradually bringing back some of our cantors from music ministry in the near future! The diocese suggests using music that is unfamiliar to the assembly, so as to not encourage group singing. As for other musicians, instruments should be limited to strings and percussions, but if there is brass or woodwinds, the instrument must have its bell and/or key holes covered up. We currently have viola and guitar, and so we are good! And the final guideline is to have only one person to a microphone per mass, as to allow time for air to flow through the windscreen. I know that all of these rules may seem overwhelming and difficult to digest, but as always, I want to thank you for being flexible, and I can’t wait until things are better and we can sing again! Contact me via phone (440.243.3877 ext. 27) or email ([email protected]) for anything involving our Music!
