THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN

2

Declare in all the earth his grace, to every heart his call, the living Lord of time and place whose love embraces all. So shall his endless praise be sung, his teaching truly heard, and every culture, every tongue, receive his timeless word.

3

Confirm our faith in this our day amid earth’s shifting sand, with Christ as life and truth and way, a rock on which to stand; the one eternal Son and Lord by God the Father given, the true and life-imparting Word, the way that leads to heaven.

4

Renew once more the ancient fire let love our hearts inflame; renew, restore, unite, inspire the church that bears your name; one name exalted over all, one Father, Spirit, Son, O grant us grace to heed your call and in that name be one.

THE RESPONSES Ferial

O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

Please be seated.

PSALM 116.11-16 Sung by the Choir June Nixon AM

11 What reward shall I give unto the Lord: for all the benefits that he hath done unto me?

12 I will receive the cup of salvation: and call upon the Name of the Lord.

13 I will pay my vows now in the presence of all his people: right dear in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

14 Behold, O Lord, how that I am thy servant: I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid; thou hast broken my bonds in sunder.

15 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving: and will call upon the Name of the Lord.

16 I will pay my vows unto the Lord, in the sight of all his people: in the courts of the Lord’s house, even in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

THE FIRST READING 2 Samuel 2.1-7; 3.1 Mr David Forbes

2After this David inquired of the LORD, ‘Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?’ The LORD said to him, ‘Go up.’ David said, ‘To which shall I go up?’ He said, ‘To Hebron.’ 2So David went up there, along with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 3David brought up the men who were with him, every one with his household; and they settled in the towns

of Hebron. 4Then the people of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.

When they told David, ‘It was the people of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul’, 5David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, ‘May you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord, and buried him! 6Now may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you! And I too will reward you because you have done this thing. 7Therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.’

3There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David; David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul became weaker and weaker.

Here ends the first lesson.

THE MAGNIFICAT Evening Service in F – John Ireland (1879-1962) The Song of Mary, St Luke 1.46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Please be seated.

THE SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 7.2-16 Canon Michael Shand QC

2 Make room in your hearts for us; we have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. 3I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. 4I often boast about you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with consolation; I am overjoyed in all our affliction.

5 For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted in every way—disputes without and fears within. 6But God, who consoles the downcast, consoled us by the arrival of Titus, 7and not only by his coming, but also by the consolation with which he was consoled about you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. 8For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it (though I did regret it, for I see that I grieved you with that letter, though only briefly). 9Now I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance; for you felt a godly grief, so that you were not harmed in any way by us.10For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief produces death. 11For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves guiltless in the matter. 12So although I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong, nor on account of the one who was wronged, but in order that your zeal for us might be made known to you before God. 13In this we find comfort.

In addition to our own consolation, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his mind has been set at rest by all of you. 14For if I have been somewhat boastful about you to him, I was not disgraced; but just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting to Titus has proved true as well. 15And his heart goes out all the more to you, as he remembers the obedience of all of you, and how you welcomed him with fear and trembling. 16I rejoice, because I have complete confidence in you.

Here ends the second lesson. All stand. The choir sings

NUNC DIMITTIS Evening Service in F – Ireland The Song of Simeon, St Luke 2.29-32

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. The Officiant and Choir sing

THE LESSER LITANY

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

RESPONSES

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation.

O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful.

O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.

O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECTS

Almighty God, whose apostles Peter and Paul glorified thee in their deaths as in their lives: grant that thy Church, inspired by their teaching and example, and knit together in unity by thy Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. All sit. The Choir sings

THE HYMN BEFORE THE SERMON

During the hymn a collection will be received to support the work of this Cathedral. Thank you for your gift.

2

Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray God’s trust; though with care and toil we build them, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God’s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower.

3

God’s great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought; splendour, light and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore.

Daily doth th’Almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; his desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at his hand; joy doth wait on his command.

5

Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call, one and all: ye who follow shall not fall.

THE HYMN AFTER THE SERMON

2

Freedom give to those in bondage, lift the burdens caused by sin. Give new hope, new strength and courage, grant release from fears within. Light for darkness; joy for sorrow; love for hatred; peace for strife; these and countless blessings follow as the Spirit gives new life.

3

In the streets of every city where the bruised and lonely dwell, let us show the Saviour’s pity, let us of his mercy tell; to all lands and peoples bringing all the richness of thy word, till the world, thy praises singing, hails thee Christ, Redeemer, Lord.

HOW TO PREPARE AND LEAD A BIBLE STUDY You are welcome to join us on Sundays 8, 15 & 22 July at 12.15pm for these sessions. All are welcome to join this interactive and fun course as we learn how to prepare and lead a Bible study. No previous experience required, nor is there an expectation of a high level of Bible knowledge – just an interest and willingness to learn. For further details speak to the Precentor or email [email protected] VOLUNTEER CAMBODIAN PROJECT JANUARY 2019 Would you like to be part of a team of volunteers working in Cambodia from 1 January to 14 January 2019? Once again the Canon Pastor will lead a team of people to engage in practical work in Siem Reap and Kandal (near Phnom Penh) Provinces amongst very poor communities. People over the age 18 may apply. All participants fund their own airfares, accommodation and food. There is great joy in this service for God! If you would like more information please contact Canon Christopher on 9653 4320 (Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays), or by email: [email protected]. USING OUR TAP & GO TECHNOLOGY Our new collection plates are fitted with a ‘tap and go’ device, allowing you to make your offering via credit card if you wish – just hold your card (don’t swipe it) against the paywave symbol until you hear a beep, and the message ‘thank you for your donation’ flashes up on the screen. The devices are set at $20, which is the average weekly contribution made by regular worshippers. Tap and go facilities are also integrated into our Chapel of Unity, and at several other donation points around the Cathedral. Please note that none of these devices accept American Express Cards.

HELP US APPOINT A NEW FULLTIME CLERGY COLLEAGUE The Cathedral is hoping to appoint a third senior fulltime cleric to coordinate teaching programs and Christian education programs for members of our Cathedral community, as well as develop, train and encourage congregational lay leadership to extend and grow our ministry at the heart of Melbourne. Chapter’s Finance Committee has identified that we would need to raise an additional $50,000 each year for the next five years to make this appointment. We would be delighted if members were willing to pledge support for this important new role through increased giving. We will collect pledges until All Saints’ Sunday (4 Nov), and will keep a monthly tally on pledges received to keep you updated. Thank you for your generous support.
