2016 Waddell Language Academy Fun Run
The Waddell Language Academy Fun Run has not only been an extremely successful fundraiser for the past few years, it has become a beloved Fall event at our school! It is a very exciting and interactive fund raising experience designed to enrich our children in fitness, educate them on character, and involve them in making a difference for their school. This year’s Fun Run kick-off assem-bly will be held on Tuesday, October 25th. The Fun Run will be held on Friday, November 4th.
THE PTSO is excited to be partnering with Boosterthon again for the event this year. The theme of the Fun Run is “Backyard Box Office” which is a movie theme all about making a difference by getting in to character. Students will learn how kids can make a difference in their commu-nity. All students will participate on the day of the Runs.
All Elementary students will bring home their Fun Run pledge packets after the kick off assembly on October 25th. Children will aim to run/walk/dance 30-35 laps on a child-sized track. A pledge can be per lap, or donations can be a flat dollar amount. For the Fall fundraiser, we encourage students to reach outside the nuclear family to other family members and friends and neighbors.
The Middle School students will also be receiving information about their Color Fun Run on October 25th. The event is a 30-45 Fun Run where students run on a track with their friends and get doused in colorful powder in the process. The Middle School will have the opportunity to receive flat donations that add up to earn prizes while earning money for the school.
Please plan to attend the Fun Run and cheer the kids on the day of the Runs!
8:30 to 9:45 am – 2nd & 3rd Grade Run
9:45 to 11:00 am – 4th & 5th Grade Run
12:15 to 1:30 pm – Kindergarten and 1st Grade Run
1:45 to 2:45 pm – Middle School Run
Last year our Fun Run raised approximately $60,000. Let’s top that this year! We encourage students to aim to raise $90 each for this event, but every dollar is appreciated and put to good use. Continued inform ation on the Fun Run will be forthcoming as the event approaches. In the meantime (or anytime), please direct any questions you have to:
Shelly Thurman at [email protected].
Please consider contacting your employer about matching opportunities!!

Mark your calendars! Scholastic Book Fair
Our Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be held Nov. 9th-18th in the Media Center. Each elementary level class will attend the book fair during their regular Media Center special class, and middle school students will be allowed to shop the fair with passes from their teachers.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that provides the books kids want to read. It's a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Reading for pleasure inside and out-side of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Please make plans to come to our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child's reading habits.
Remember, all purchases benefit our school. See you at the Book Fair!

New and returning parents - we are happy to announce that Waddell is contin-
uing to participate in the Crayola ColorCycle program. This is a wonderful pro-
gram where schools can send in their old markers to be recycled into new
products. Teachers will have collection boxes in the workrooms where they
can drop off old markers, dry erase markers, and highlighters. Parents can
send in their old markers as well by placing them in a bag or envelope labeled
"ColorCycle Donation". Get your kids involved in this eco-friendly pro-
gram! Have them “test” their markers and send in the old ones to keep them
out of the landfill.
If anyone has any questions, please contact Amelia Beonde at [email protected] or Heather Hensley at [email protected]. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info.

A Note from the School Office..
Beginning November 1, we will implement a new policy regarding replacing student ID badges. The first replacement during the school year will be free. All following re-placements will cost $1 each. Payment will be via OSP. Please remind your children not to chew, pull on, or break the badges. Students should leave the badges with their classroom or homeroom teachers at the end of the school day. Thank you for your support.
Other Reminders.. Do remember to label your child’s sweaters, hats, gloves, as well as lunch boxes, water bottles, and musical in-struments so that our lost and found does not get filled with perfectly good items that have a loving home.
Transportation Changes should be emailed to [email protected] prior to 1:00 pm the day of the change?
Here is an example of confusing communication and good communication: Confusing example: Jane Doe Car pool # 123 Bus #321 Will be a car rider today #123, please do not put her on bus #321. She normally rides bus #321, but she should be a car rider today. Correct example: Jane Doe will be a car rider today #123 Or Jane Doe will ride the bus home today #321.

Counselor’s Corner
Parents, please take a few moments to contribute to the Waddell School Counseling Needs Assess-
ment. This brief survey has been designed to assist your child's School Counselors in improving and
making our program more effective. Any confidential information you provide on this form will only be
read by Mrs. Reece, Mrs. Vega, and Mrs. Bryant. If you would like to serve on our School Counseling
Advisory Council this year, please contact Mrs. Bryant or mark your interest on the survey. Thank you
for your time and ideas.
On October 26th, students in 4th – 8th grades will participate in National Mix It Up at Lunch Day. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is a national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance in 2002. Mix It Up at Lunch Day encourages students to cross group lines and meet new people. Mix It Up also fosters school spirit and unity, raises awareness about social boundaries, and helps students meet different kinds of peo-ple. Students are encouraged to sit at a table with someone who they’ve never con-sidered sitting with and engage in positive conversations. Members of the National Junior Honor Society along with the Middle School Counselors will help to facilitate this day of unity and fun! You can find out more at mixitup.org.

Parents/ Room Moms and Dads—we need your pictures!
We need your help in order to include as many pictures of your child(ren) as possible in the yearbook this year! Share your awesome photos through a free APP for smartphones called Replayit by Jostens. By simply downloading the free APP to your smartphones or tablet, you can begin sharing saved photos in your gallery or up-load new pictures as soon as you take them! It is so easy.
Download the app, search for Waddell Language Academy, connect with your Face-book log-in or set up an account and the photos uploaded will then flow directly to year-book staff for consideration. If you would prefer to upload a large number of photos all at once, you can also go to www.replayit.com from a computer. Be sure to tag the photos by room, grade and as much information as possible. Please help us make the most inclusive yearbook yet! All pictures uploaded will become part of a digital time capsule of this school year, archived for the next 10 years. Thanks so much for your help in capturing your students year!
Thanks! - Ms. Reese

Enroll your child in the ONE Access Program today! Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are partnering to support
students' ongoing education. We are working together to ensure that every CMS student will
have access to books and resources found at their public library. CMS students are now able to
use the CMS student ID number to access and check out public library resources. This exciting
initiative is called ONE Access because the CMS student ID number is all that a student needs.
Important things to know:
Students can borrow e-resources and access library databases
Students can borrow up to 10 print or audio books
There are NO overdue fines for ONE Access accounts (users are responsible for lost book fees) Superintendent Ann Clark is asking that 100% of our students log in to the Charlotte Public Li-
brary using ONE Access and their student ID number. Could you please help your child log into
his/her account at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as soon as possible? This will give you and
your child the chance to see all the wonderful educational resources that can be accessed using
just your child's student ID number. The steps are outlined below.

The Taiko club was introduced by our very own student representative who did an amaz-ing job sharing (in English and Japanese) about the immersion program at Waddell and the Taiko club – thank you Summer! The Club took the stage and wowed the large crowd gathered at the Wells Fargo Atri-um to celebrate the diversity in our shared community. Great job Taiko students on yet another terrific per-formance!
