BECOME A HOST FAMILY FOR OUR ACADEMIC VOLUNTEERS IN THE FALL!
Each year Waddell teachers are supported not only by our staff, parents, and students – but also by an amazing group of inter-
national academic volunteers (AVs). These student teacher volunteers from Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan, and now
China (new for the 2017-17 school year) play a vital role in our school by providing our teachers with much needed classroom
assistance at no cost to the school. In addition, they provide our children with a second native speaker in the classroom. This
is especially important in the 2nd – 5th grades, where we no longer have a CMS provided assistant. In turn, Waddell families
play a vital role in this process by hosting these volunteers while they spend time at our school.
During this school year Waddell hosted an astounding 29 Academic Volunteers who stayed, on average, from 2-6 weeks. This
is an amazing endeavor that would not have been possible without Waddell families generously opening their homes to host
these AVs.
Building upon this year's success, we expect the 2016-17 school year to expand our AV program even more. We already have
information on 9 German AVs who want to come in the Fall of 2016, with additional German, French, Japanese, and Chinese
AVs to come in early 2017. To sustain this growth we need to have Waddell families willing to open their homes for hosting.
If your family is interested in learning more about hosting please contact Cat McClain at [email protected]. Indicating an interest does not commit you to hosting at any point but will allow us to provide you with information when we have details on incoming AVs. This is a great opportunity that has enriched the lives of many fellow Waddell families!
SUPPORT THE WADDELL BAND GET A GREAT DEAL ON RESTAURANTS AND ATTRACTIONS ACROSS THE CITY!
The Waddell Band will be doing a new fundraiser this fall selling GoPlaySave books (formerly called Citipass books). We have
been given a number of 2016 books and with every 2017 pre-purchased book you will receive a FREE 2016 book with tons of great
coupons valid all the way until November 30th! Also, if you purchase 5 books you will get one free, thus receiving 6 current books
and 6 in August when they come off the printer. www.goplaysavecharlotte.com/store/waddell2017

WADDELL’S JAPANESE PROGRAM REPRESENTS THE SCHOOL AT ANIMAZEMENT AND CHARLOTTE ASIAN FESTIVAL
Information provided by Mr. Furuya "Animazement" @Raleigh Convention Center, 5/27-29 __http://www.animazement.com/about/__
Animazement, the biggest Anime convention in Carolinas was held on Memorial Day weekend in Raleigh, NC. Ms. Aoyagi, one of the founders and the directors of the event started it in 1997 to celebrate Japanese culture in many as-pects, not just for anime & manga. She is also a Japanese high school teacher in Raleigh & Chapel Hill, and that is why the CMS Japanese Teachers team was invited to intro-duce programs at Waddell Academy, South Meck & West Meck (moving to North Meck next year). Mr. Furuya, who teaches at both Waddell & South and also is an anime fan himself, represented our programs at the event. Along with all the anime attractions (such as movies, costume & singing competition, goods sales, etc.), one of the highlights was the presentation by Japanese astro-naut, Mr. Noguchi. He shared his experience in Space and ac-tually Anime story was written based on his experience in Inter-national Space Station. He did the voice for himself. Dressed up as Gintama character, Mr. Furuya had chance to talk to many families. Most participants were in their 20’s (of their age) and they wished they had have school like Waddell when they were younger (in their cities). Some school children enjoyed Origami and they wished to visit Waddell sometime. Mr. Furuya will continue to participate in the event to promote
ASIAN FESTIVAL, 5/14, @ RAMSEY CREEK PARK (LAKE NORMAN) Annual Asian Festival was held on Saturday, May 14th. It is best known for its Dragon Boat Race, but more than 10 Asian countries brought their cultural presentations under one tent. Japanese Cultural Club at South Meck has been participating since 2010. Mr. Furuya has been teaching Origami to the children and some parents in the Char-lotte Community at the festival since 1995 and the Asian Chamber of Commerce recognized him for this commitment. This year South Meck had their prom on that day, so Lua McGimsey, a Myers Park senior & Waddell graduate of Japanese im-mersion, came to help with the Origami. ---

We are now happy to announce that Waddell will be participating in the Cray-ola ColorCycle program. This is a wonderful program where schools can send in their old markers to be recycled into new products. Teachers will have col-lection boxes in the workrooms where they can drop off old markers, dry erase markers and highlighters. Parents can send in their old markers as well. There will be a collection box in the front office. Get your kids involved in this eco-friendly program! Have them “test” their markers and send in the old ones to keep them out of the landfill.
If anyone has any questions, please contact Heather Hensley at [email protected]. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info.

ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN THE ONE ACCESS PRO-GRAM TODAY!
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are partnering to support students'
ongoing education. We are working together to ensure that every CMS student will have access to books
and resources found at their public library. CMS students are now able to use the CMS student ID number
to access and check out public library resources. This exciting initiative is called ONE Access because the
CMS student ID number is all that a student needs.
Important things to know:
Students can borrow e-resources and access library databases
Students can borrow up to 10 print or audio books
There are NO overdue fines for ONE Access accounts (users are responsible for lost book fees) Superintendent Ann Clark is asking that 100% of our students log in to the Charlotte Public Library using ONE
Access and their student ID number. Could you please help your child log into his/her account at the Char-
lotte Mecklenburg Library as soon as possible? This will give you and your child the chance to see all the
wonderful educational resources that can be accessed using just your child's student ID number. The steps
are outlined below.
Thank you so much and please enjoy the wealth of resources available to families and students free at the
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library! Steps to initiate ONE Access account at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library:
Go to https://www.cmlibrary.org/
Click on Account in upper right hand corner
Username is student's CMS Student ID #
Password is last 4 digits of CMS Student ID#
