Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading Jb 7:1-4, 6-7

Job spoke, saying: Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery? Are not his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me. If in bed I say, “When shall I arise?” then the night drags on; I am filled with restlessness until the dawn. My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end with-out hope. Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see happiness again.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 147:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

Praise the LORD, for he is good; sing praise to our God, for he is gracious; it is fitting to praise him.

The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem; the dispersed of Israel he gathers. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He tells the number of the stars he calls each by name.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; to his wisdom there is no limit. The LORD sustains the lowly; the wicked he casts to the ground.

Second Reading 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23

Brothers and sisters: If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been im-posed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it! If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. What then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some. All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

Gospel Mk 1:29-39

On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon ’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak be-cause they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose, have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

Pensamientos/Reflexiones sobre el evangelio de esta semana

Hoy continuamos leyendo el Evangelio de Marcos, aprendiendo más sobre el ministerio de Jesús. Jesús curó a la

suegra de Simón y ella inmediatamente comenzó a servir a Jesús y a sus discípulos. Jesús también curó a muchos

otros que le fueron traídos, sanando sus enfermedades y expulsando demonios. Como veremos a lo largo del Evan-

gelio de Marcos, Jesús no permitió que los demonios hablaran porque conocían su identidad y se la habrían revela-

do a los presentes.

A la mañana siguiente de este ajetreado día, Jesús se retiró en oración, pero Simón y otros lo persiguieron y le tra-

jeron la noticia de que mucha gente lo estaba buscando. En este punto del Evangelio de Marcos, comenzamos a

ver un papel distintivo para el círculo interno de los discípulos de Jesús: actúan como intermediarios entre Jesús y

la gente. Jesús informa a sus discípulos que necesitan salir de Cafarnaúm para predicar en otros lugares.

El evangelio de hoy completa una imagen del ministerio de Jesús: predicar, curar enfermos, expulsar demonios y

luego continuar para continuar esta obra en otro lugar. El evangelio de Marcos nos dice que Jesús hizo esto en toda

Galilea.

La compasión de Jesús y la curación de los enfermos es un signo del Reino de Dios. La Iglesia continúa extendien-

dijo que era hora de seguir adelante. Creemos que en sus oraciones Jesús encon-

tró guía y dirección de Dios. También llevamos nuestra toma de decisiones a

Dios en oración, pidiendo su guía y dirección en nuestras vidas.

Thoughts/Reflections about this week’s gospel reading

Today we continue to read from Mark’s Gospel, learning more about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. As we will see throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would have revealed it to those who

were present.

On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was pursued by Simon and others who brought news that many people were looking for him. At this point in Mark’s Gospel, we begin to see a distinct role for the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples—they act as intermediaries between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to his disciples that

they need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places.

Today’s Gospel completes a picture of Jesus’ min-istry: preaching, curing the sick, driving out de-mons, and then moving on to continue this work in another place. Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus

did this throughout Galilee.

Jesus’ compassion and healing of the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of God. The Church continues to extend Christ’s healing presence to others in its ministry to the sick. In the Sacrament of the Anoint-ing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort

for those who are suffering from illness.

In today’s Gospel we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’ daily life. Jesus rose early in the morning, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus found guidance and di-rection from God. We also bring our decision-making to God in prayer, asking for his guid-

ance and direction in our lives.

En aquel día, Job tomó la palabra y dijo: “La vida del hombre en la tierra

es visa de soldado y sus días, como días de un jornalero. Como el esclavo

suspira en vano por la sombra y el jornalero se queda aguardando su sala-

rio, así me han tocado en suerte meses de infortunio y se me han asignado

noches de dolor. Al acostarme, pienso: ‘¿Cuándo será de día?’ La noche se

alarga y me canso de dar vueltas hasta que amanece. Mis días corren más

aprisa que una lanzadera y se consumen sin esperanza. Recuerda, Señor,

que mi vida es un soplo. Mis ojos no volverán a ver la dicha”.

Salmo 146,1-2. 3-4. 5-6 R. (8) Alabemos al Señor, nuestro Dios.

Alabemos al Señor, nuestro Dios, porque es hermoso y justo el albarlo. El

Hermanos: No tengo por qué presumir de predicar el Evangelio, puesto

que ésa es mi obligación. ¡Ay de mí, si no anuncio el Evangelio! Si yo lo

hiciera por propia iniciativa, merecería recompensa; pero si no, es que se

me ha confiado una misión. Entonces, ¿en qué consiste mi recompensa?

Consiste en predicar el Evangelio gratis, renunciando al derecho que tengo

a vivir de la predicación. Aunque no estoy sujeto a nadie, me he converti-

do en esclavo de todos, para ganarlos a todos. Con los débiles me hice dé-

bil, para ganar a los débiles. Me he hecho todo a todos, a fin de ganarlos a

todos. Todo lo hago por el Evangelio, para participar yo también de sus

bienes

Evangelio Mk 1, 29-39

En aquel tiempo, al salir Jesús de la sinagoga, fue con Santiago y Juan a

casa de Simón y Andrés. La suegra de Simón estaba en cama, con fiebre, y

enseguida le avisaron a Jesús. Él se le acercó, y tomándola de la mano, la

levantó. En ese momento se le quitó la fiebre y se puso a servirles. Al atar-

decer, cuando el sol se ponía, le llevaron a todos los enfermos y poseídos

del demonio, y todo el pueblo se apiñó junto a la puerta. Curó a muchos

enfermos de diversos males y expulsó a muchos demonios, pero no dejó

que los demonios hablaran, porque sabían quién era él. De madrugada,

cuando todavía estaba muy oscuro, Jesús se levantó, salió y se fue a un

lugar solitario, donde se puso a orar. Si-

món y sus compañeros lo fueron a buscar,

y al encontrarlo, le dijeron: “Todos te an-

dan buscando”. Él les dijo: “Vamos a los

pueblos cercanos para predicar también

allá el Evangelio, pues para eso he veni-

do”. Y recorrió toda Galilea, predicando

en las sinagogas y expulsando a los de-

monios.
