October 25, 2020 Jesus and the Law

It is said that the ancient Spanish conquistadors who colonized America and other places, when they found themselves far from the Spanish kings, they would often affirm that “they accepted the law but did not abide by it;” that is, they recognized the law as valid, but in its place, they would do what they considered to be more convenient. Some of this has remained as an inheritance in Spain as well as other lands that at some point were part of the empire. Perhaps it is a tactic of survival and self autonomy. In other words, one would do whatever was more beneficial considering the situa-tion. There are many attitudes before the law, yet the message of today’s readings reminds us of the true law and of the word that is real and authen-tic, which is not just on our lips and understanding, but in our actions. In the first reading we are told how God’s first concern is the attention to those that are perceived to be the weakest by society: the orphans and the widows, those who do not have the benefit of having a male in the house who could provide material necessities and safety. During the times of Je-sus, these two groups were at the bottom of the social scale and, although they were protected by the laws, it was easy to ignore the law and abandon them. The other group addressed was the foreigners, remembering as the book of Leviticus says that we were all, at some point, foreigners. In the second reading, Paul is rejoiced seeing how the community of Thessaloni-ca accepted the word not just as a word, but as a force of life and action. Jesus is presented in the Gospel as making the perfect summary of all the existing laws that were memorized, and often complied with mechanically, but without the heart. These laws were known, yet they were not fully obeyed. Jesus reminds us that, in fact, there are only two true laws because in complying with them with all your strength: soul, heart, and mind, not only are the 613 laws fulfilled, but so are the millions of practices that are directed toward the expression of love and the common wellbeing. To love with all your heart, soul, and mind implies being completely occupied with what God wants; it means to seek life for everyone. Every one of our daily actions, no matter how small, if carried out with love and for love, will pro-duce love and the fruits of love. According to Jesus, things done without love may appear to abide by the law externally; but, in reality, are illegiti-mate because they do not respond to the two great precepts of God’s laws.

How do I care for the weakest in my community and society? Do my daily actions express love, that is, the search for the common wellbeing, which is God’s law?

Se cuenta que los antiguos conquistadores españoles en América y otros lugares que colonizaban, al verse lejos del poder de los reyes españoles, a menudo afirmaban que “acataban la ley, pero no la cumplían;” es decir, la reconocían como la ley vigente, pero en su lugar iban a hacer lo que les pareciera más conveniente. Algo de eso ha quedado como herencia tanto en la propia España como en todas las tierras que en algún momento estuvieron en el imperio. Quizá es una táctica de supervivencia y afirmación de la propia autonomía. En otras palabras, se haría lo que fuera más beneficioso en la situación. Hay muchas actitudes frente a la ley, pero el mensaje de las lecturas de hoy nos recuerda que la verdadera ley y la palabra que es real y auténtica es la que está no sólo en los labios y en el entendimiento, sino en la

acción. En la primera lectura se nos habla de cómo la primera preocupación de Dios es la atención a los que, en la sociedad, parecen ser más débiles: los huérfanos y las viudas, que no tienen el beneficio de un varón en la casa que pueda proveer a las necesidades materiales y de seguridad. Estos dos grupos eran, en tiempos de Jesús, los últimos en la escala social y, aunque las leyes los protegieran, era fácil ignorar la ley y abandonarlos. El otro grupo al que se refiere es el de los extranjeros recordando, como dice el libro del Levítico, que todos fuimos, en algún momento, extranjeros. En la segunda lectura Pablo se alegra viendo cómo la comunidad de Tesalónica aceptó la palabra no solo como una palabra, sino como una fuerza de vida y de acción. En el Evangelio se nos presenta a Jesús haciendo el resumen perfecto de todas esas leyes que existían y que se memorizaban, y que a menudo se cumplían mecánicamente, pero no con el corazón. Se reconocían, pero no se cumplían plenamente. Jesús nos recuerda que, en realidad, solo hay dos leyes verdaderas, porque, cumpliendo esas con toda la fuerza de la persona: alma, corazón y mente, se cumplen, no ya las 613, sino millones de prácticas que van dirigidas a la expresión del amor y del bien común. Amar con todo el corazón, el alma y la mente implica estar totalmente ocupado en lo que quiere Dios; significa buscar la vida para todos. Todos y cada uno de los actos del día, por muy pequeños que sean, si se hacen con amor y por amor, producirán amor y frutos de vida. Las cosas que se hacen sin amor, según Jesús, podrían parecer estar ajustadas a la ley, externamente; pero en realidad, son ilegítimas, porque no responden a esos dos grandes preceptos de la ley de Dios.

¿Cómo me ocupo de los más débiles de la comunidad y la sociedad? ¿Expresan mis acciones diarias el amor, es decir, la búsqueda del bien para todos, que es la ley de Dios?
