  • TAKE A VIRTUAL COLLEGE TOUR!

    ● While many colleges are cancelling their campus tours, open houses and preview days, you can take a virtual tour on their site.

    ● Look at their majors...do they have what you are interested in? What are the costs? Any scholarship opportunities?

    ● Online (direct to institution or Common App)● Transcript/Self-reported academic record● Send test score directly● Application fee – Waiver?● May also need:

  • APPLY DIRECT TO THE INSTITUTION

    ● On the College’s website click on the admissions tab ● In Naviance, click “Colleges I’m applying to” in Naviance

    ○ Select “direct to institution” in the dropdown.● Request transcript and any required/recommended letters of recommendation through Naviance● Naviance may not let you request items until you’ve indicated that the application has been submitted

  • COMMON APPLICATION● You will only fill out a common Application if you are applying to more than one

    school within the 800 schools associated with common app. ● Select the colleges you want to apply to

    ○ Generally, only worth doing for 3 or more, or exclusive● Sign into your Naviance account and match it to CA

    ○ It won’t let you until you complete FERPA in CA● Request transcript and any required/recommended letters of recommendation

    through Naviance● Be aware of the many parts of the Common App

    ○ Teacher Evaluation○ Secondary School Report

    ■ May include counselor evaluation (letter of rec) – you need to determine if your school requires it, and if so, ask for it!

  • TOP COLLEGE APP MISTAKES

    ● Missing a deadline● Misspelling and gramma● Not reading carefully● Letting Mom or Dad fill out the app● Not submitting● Forgetting signatures● Inappropriate email/not checking regularly● Not following up to make sure your app is complete

  • SAT SCORES

    ● Very important: We do not list your SAT score on your transcript.● This means that you MUST request for your official SAT score to be sent from

    SAT to the college you are applying to● You can do this through your student account on www.collegeboard.org

    ○ If you are taking the SAT a second (or third or fourth) time, you can always let a college know that you have taken the SAT again and that your score will be sent to them as soon as it is available.

  • PERSONAL STATEMENT

    ● Don’t spend time talking about your GPA or class rank. They can see that on your transcript.

    ● Talk about why you want to be there, what you will bring to that campus and other significant/unique qualities about you.

    ● It is also an opportunity to explain any poor grades that may have occurred (TIP: NEVER say “I’m a bad test taker.”).

    ● You may use the same personal statement for multiple colleges but EDIT CAREFULLY!!

  • LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

    ● Read the application directions○ If the school doesn’t ask for one, don’t send one!

    ● Complete the Letter of Recommendation survey in Naviance● Ask face-to-face● Complete request in Naviance (all electronic)● Allow 2-3 weeks● Check in Naviance & with writer● Thank the writer

  • REQUESTING YOUR TRANSCRIPT

    ● YOU MUST FILL OUT THE THE TRANSCRIPT RELEASE WAIVER

    BEFORE YOU REQUEST YOUR TRANSCRIPT.

    ● Most schools (except schools that do self-reporting) will require that you send

    an official transcript to them following your application

    ● YOU MUST REQUEST ALL TRANSCRIPTS THROUGH NAVIANCE!

    ● If you do not have your Naviance login, please see your counselor.

    ● You need to enter Naviance through the School Website.
