Principal’s ReportAs we approach the end of the school year, it is nice to take a moment and reflect on all we have achieved at Corowa High School in 2017. We have implemented a number of new initiatives this year aimed at improving student engagement and learning outcomes and have seen our students excel in a broad range of extra-curricular activities from debating and public speaking competitions, to artistic productions and a vast range of sporting endeavours. Amidst all of this, our students have continued to work diligently in the classroom developing skills to become active, effective and engaged global citizens in the 21st Century.

All of these achievements speak to the outstanding capabilities of our students at Corowa High School, but what is often overlooked is the impact that excellent teaching can have. Occasionally I receive calls from parents, grandparents and community members asking that I pass on my thanks to the staff at Corowa High School for the fantastic work they are doing with our students and community. These messages help remind our staff about the positive influence they can have on the lives of students and I am pleased to be the bearer of good tidings. However, there is no greater recognition, nor reward, for a teacher than a simple thanks from one of their students. A student saying ‘thanks Miss’ or ‘thanks Sir’ is a student we know we have reached, one who recognises the efforts that have been made and appreciates what they have learnt, one who understands that teachers do more than teach and who wants to acknowledge those efforts. So in these last few weeks of school take the time to thank those teachers who have encouraged you to strive and enabled you to achieve.

On a personal note, I will be taking maternity leave from 12 March 2018 (Week 6, Term 1) and returning in Term 4. The Relieving Principal’s position has been advertised and will be filled by Ruth Winfield, Deputy Principal Positive Behaviour for Learning at the Port Macquarie office. I would like to congratulate Ruth and I know she will appreciate the opportunity to live and work in this fantastic community and school.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season, I look forward to another fantastic year in 2018.

Dr Joanne Bellette

Principal

Did You Know?If you knew that as many as 86% of influencers believe that volunteering would make you more competitive among a pool of job seekers, wouldn’t you make sure to put that activity front and centre on your resume?

If you are a student and are told that most scholarships are given to people who volunteer wouldn’t you go out and volunteer.

In the recruitment world of jobs and job seekers, recruiters are overwhelmingly in favour of volunteering as a professional development tool. Among the findings:

• 92% believe volunteering expands an employee’s professional skill set

• 85% are willing to overlook resume pitfalls when an employee includes volunteering on a resume

• 82% are more likely to choose a candidate with volunteering experience

• 80% believe volunteering is an effective way to boost leadership skills

• 73% believe people who volunteer are more successful.

Young people’s involvement in volunteer initiatives stimulates the development of creative thinking and the ability to quickly adjust in new situations, it forms tolerance for others’ values, social sensitivity and an active civil stance - skills which can be capitalized on when both searching for a job and starting a business. These skills make young volunteers much more successful on the labour market, compared to their peers, who lack volunteering experience.

Returning Permission NotesParents and students are reminded that notes and money must be returned on or before the date specified, or your child will not be allowed to attend the excursion. Payment plans may be put in place in special circumstances, but must be organised ahead of time.
