Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may you live as the Holy
Family, united in respect and love. I wish you a joyous and
blessed Christmas surrounded by those you hold dear and may the
New Year bring you much love, happiness and prosperity. On
behalf of Fr. Massimo Buttigieg, Deacon Alban Soares and the
rest of the pastoral team, I would like to thank all those
parishioners who not only offered their prayers and good wishes
for us but their cards and gifts at Christmas time.
A special mention goes out to all our volunteers who have given
of their time, talent and treasure to the various apostolates at St.
Francis de Sales, making it a vibrant and faith-filled parish. I pray
that the love of the Holy Family be theirs throughout the coming
year.

REFLECTION
This week we look at the Infancy Narrative in chapters one
and two of St. Matthew’s gospel. St. Matthew’s Infancy
Narrative can thus be viewed:
Introduction (1:1-17) The Genealogy of Jesus
Scene 1 (1:18-25) Joseph’s first dream
Scene 2 (2:1-12) Herod, Magi, Bethlehem
Scene 3 (2:13-15) Joseph’s second dream
Scene 4 (2:16-18) Herod, children, Bethlehem
Scene 5 (2:19-23) Joseph’s third dream
These five scenes are indicative of how St. Matthew would
divide up his remaining gospel into 5 sections, mimicking the
Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament (OT).
St. Matthew divides the genealogy of Jesus into three units of
fourteen. It is not an exhaustive list since several OT names
are omitted and the divisions cover unequal periods. St.
Matthew stresses the number 14 to show Jesus as the new
Davidic King. Firstly, David’s name is fourteenth on the first
unit and thus given his title, King (1:6) and Jesus’ name is
also fourteenth on the third unit and thus given His title as
Christ (1:16). David and Jesus are the only two names to be
given titles.
Secondly, St. Matthew chose fourteen because of the
numerical value of David’s name. It was a practice of the
Jewish people to give a numerical value to names, to the
consonants (D=4)+(V=6)+(D=4) =14.
Thirdly, there are 42 generations in the genealogy from
Abraham to Jesus. In the OT, there were 42 encampments of
the Israelites in the desert from their exodus in Egypt to their
entry into the Promised Land. As you look closely at St.
Matthew’s gospel, the life of Jesus will mimic the life of
Moses and Israel. Like Moses, at Jesus’ birth, His life was
endangered by an evil king; He had to escape for the sake of
His life; He emerges from Egypt and passes through a body
of water (at His baptism) (3:13-17), goes into the desert and
face the same temptations as did Israel of old (4:1-11); and
like Moses, delivers the “law,” the beatitudes (5:1-12).
There are 5 women named in the genealogy. Apart from
Mary, St. Matthew lists 4 OT women: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth
and Uriah’s wife (Bathsheba). These 4 OT women shared
something in common with Mary. There was something
extraordinary or irregular or unusual in their union with their
partners, a union that continued the blessed lineage of the
Messiah.
The annunciation scene in St. Matthew’s gospel (1:18-25) is
quite different from St. Luke’s. Joseph takes prominence
over Mary and even though Joseph is in the foreground,
not one spoken word is attributed to him. Mary remains
in the background just as silently as her husband. Some
people assume that Joseph wanted to put away Mary quietly
because of adultery. However, the way in which 1:18-25
was written, Joseph was already informed of the divine
miracle within Mary (1:18).
Joseph considers himself unworthy to be part of God’s work
in this unusual situation.
Your 2018 box of offertory envelopes is ready for pick up in
the Church foyer. Please be sure that the box you pick up has
your name and address on it. If you have any inquires or if you
do not currently have a box of envelopes and would like a box
please go to the parish. It is very important that parishioners DO
NOT use envelopes from previous years. Any unused envelopes
should be discarded. Each year we recycle the envelope numbers
that are not active. We do not want you to make a contribution
using old envelopes and have it credited to someone else who is
using the new 2018 envelopes with the same number. Thank you
for your continued generosity.
(Reflection cont’d)
St. Matthew wants the reader to know that Joseph was aware
of Mary’s pregnancy by editorializing “…of the Holy Spirit”
(1:18). Joseph’s resolve to separate quietly from Mary is thus
viewed as a reverent and discretionary measure to keep secret
the mystery within her. “To put her to shame..” (1:19) means
that Joseph did not wish to exhibit Mary in a public way. The
angelic annunciation in 1:20 directs Joseph to set aside his
pious fears that would lead him away from his vocation as the
legal father of the Davidic Messiah.
St. Matthew’s portrait of Joseph takes on the coloration of the
OT patriarch Joseph. First, they not only shared the same
name, but even their fathers shared a common name, Jacob
(Genesis 37:2-3, Mat 1:16). Second, both are persecuted.
Third, both end up in Egypt as a result of their persecution.
Fourth, both Josephs are famous for their dreams. It seems
that every scene with Joseph, in St. Matthew’s gospel,
involves an angel of the Lord appearing to him in a dream
and telling him to do something or go somewhere. Fifth, both
Josephs are well known for their purity. Joseph of the OT
spurned the temptation of Potiphar’s wife; while Joseph of
the NT did not “know” his wife during her pregnancy (1:25).
According to the Catholic tradition, Mary and Joseph
remained celibate throughout their marriage. Sixth, both
Josephs find themselves as heads of those they naturally
should not have authority over. Seventh, both Josephs are
known for their role as the protector and rescuer of their
families. (Next week, we continue on with the Infancy
Narrative from St. Matthew’s gospel).
