    International Study Mission

    Different in perspective

    Expanding your horizons on an

    international Study Mission

At Newcastle Business School were ortunate in

welcoming a diverse and vibrant MBA community rom

all over the world. The one week study mission included

in your ull-time course ees extends your international

experience still urther recently including inspiring

visits to South Arica, the Czech Republic, Germany,

    Canada, Hungary and Austria.

We select partners rom multinational and local businesses in

a broad range o service and manuacturing sectors. Its your

chance to spend time with key business thinkers, industry

leaders and entrepreneurs beore taking part in studentworkshops to debate the contrasting business models you

    encounter and associated theory.

For us, understanding and appreciating other cultures is a

key actor or success in international markets. Thats why we

always ensure theres time or guided talks and other cultural

experiences during your study mission stay.

Being an international student, the study mission

was a truly fantastic experience for me, both

professionally and personally. Exposing me todifferent methods of doing business across Europe

(Austria & Hungary), along with an understanding

of the inuencing socio-economic factors, in my

view shall be very useful in my future career.

    Personally, learning about great European

cultures, visiting beautiful cities and bonding

with my classmates and tutors, are memories

    I shall cherish forever.

Anjani Kant, MBA student rom India

    There was much more than studying in the event;

what makes it distinctive for me, was not onlybeautiful cities and company visits, but lots of

opportunities to explore cultural differences, as

well as getting to know the great people that are

    our fellow students and tutors.

Nazli Nejadsattari, MBA student rom Iran

The Study Mission was a wonderful experience.

It helped us to see the opportunities and

challenges in the real world of business and also

the dichotomy between theory and practice.

    Learning through live Consultancy

In the second semester we oer you the opportunity to

compare theory with practice and demonstrate various

essential business skills, particularly leadership and

team working, by undertaking a live, group-based

consultancy project with a local company.

This is an alternative to the taught options on our MBA

programme and consistent with our philosophy o reective

practice. Partners weve worked with in the past include local

businesses, as well as multinational corporations such as

Procter & Gamble (P&G), who frst identiy a specifc business

or organisational problem requiring a practical and achievable

    solution.

Your host organisation will provide a project briefng and review,

supported by appropriate academic guidance rom a Newcastle

Business School project supervisor. In return, your group o

typically our to fve students, will provide the client organisation

with a detailed, 4,000-word business report alongside a

presentation o fndings and recommendations. Much o the

market research, business strategy and HRM consultancy

delivered by our students has been subsequently used to good

    eect by participating frms.

This kind o live project work provides an ideal grounding or

any MBA student interested in pursuing a career in business

    Residential Weekends

    Different in mind-set

Learning beyond the classroom on Residential Weekends

Two residential weekends enable ull-time MBA students to exchange ideas and develop skills with part-time MBA

colleagues in relaxed, convivial surroundings. The rst o these enables you to refect and build upon your managerial development assessing your learning style

and ability to work eectively in teams. The second ocuses on a business simulation which will see you building

and running a major virtual corporation in groups. This is your opportunity to put theory into practice and discover

just how dicult it is to manage large, complex organisations.

    Residential Weekend 1:Developing Self

The development o leadership capability is the main ocus o

postgraduate study at Newcastle Business School. So within

the frst ew weeks o starting your MBA programme, both

ull-time and part-time students come together in a hotel-basedweekend residential to begin your journey to becoming the

managers and leaders you aspire to be.

As part o the Leaders and their Context module, the residential

provides you with the opportunity to put into practice the

leadership and team building theories and rameworks to which

youve been introduced in the classroom. Youll also have the

opportunity to put to good use the fndings rom diagnostic

toolkits such as Belbin, Insights, and a variety o leadership

and management competency questionnaires. This leadership

development is achieved through a series o activities, involving

working together in various multi-cultural teams to fnd solutions

to the problems and challenges that youll be set. With periods

or review and reection, these tasks provide you with the

opportunity to experience and analyse your own, and others,

leadership and team working approaches. You will work with

your tutors back in the classroom to identiy a set o personal

objectives and learning areas which can be worked on in the

remaining weeks o the module, and thereater to orm parto a development plan. This development plan provides the

basis rom which students embark on our career development

    module in semester two.

Students say that this residential is one o the highlights o the

entire programme, providing a springboard or their personal

and proessional development. Youll leave the weekend with a

comprehensive overview o your leadership and team-building

strengths, together with identifed areas or development.

Not only that, this residential provides valuable networking

    Residential Weekend 2:Business Simulation

A vital part o a managers development is a realisation o theirability to lead, and be part o, a team. The vehicle or involving

the MBA students in explicit team working is the Business

    Simulation.

Essentially the Business Simulation is a game, where teams

o students compete against each other within an existing and

established market setting. The game involves the teams

making round-by-round decisions which are submitted to a

    computer based simulation programme.

You will be allocated into teams and the game is a hotel-

based residential event, removed rom everyday university lie.

You will develop a detailed understanding o how the our key

business unctions o operations, fnance, marketing and humanresources integrate to underpin and aid the implementation o

organisational strategy, whilst aspects o team working around

both the roles o the individual and collective decision making

build upon and reinorce your learning rom the frst residential

event earlier in the MBA programme. From a social perspective,

the residential event provides the opportunity or the ull-time

and part-time students to meet, work together and network. This

is particularly benefcial to the ull-time students, many o whom

are international, and as such, welcome the opportunity to work

    alongside their British counterparts.

Awarded MBA in September 2010, studying or a PhD

I chose the Newcastle Business School MBA because it can

be completed over a year, as opposed to some which are

longer. Other MBAs are also more expensive.

Id completed my Marketing degree at Northumbria so knew

the quality o the acilities and the sta, who were instrumental

in convincing me to invest. The academics here have since

encouraged me to study or a PhD.

The MBA course is very intense, particularly in the frst

semester. In the second, I was much more confdent. The

teaching team has the best people or specialist topics

combining industry experience and academic rigour. TheBusiness Simulation weekend was great un, involving team-

work, decision making, and all aspects o managing a large

    company.

The Newcastle Business School MBA has shaped me

I opted or the MBA at Newcastle Business School because

it has a reputation or giving students current and relevant

knowledge to help them get a job in their chosen feld. This

Sta have gone out o their way to ensure the learning

on student eedback. Residential events have been particularly

well thought through to maximise the learning experience or

    everyone.

Being a postgraduate is always interesting and challenging. I

fnd the seminars particularly helpul as lecturers encourage us

to read around the subject and engage ully within the sessions

to understand issues in more depth and breadth.

The learning experience at Newcastle Business School is

rewarding, and students learn skills that match the needs o

The most important beneft o my MBA course is that its

this, Id been educated and worked only in China. Its also

totally renewed my theoretical knowledge in management andrefned my previous experience giving me a global perspective

thus oering greater potential or uture progress. Last but

not the least, the course has brought me a lot o wonderul new

The most amazing part o the learning experience has been the

seminars. They were well organised to make us ully grasp the

underlying meaning and application behind the theory. We got

involved in comprehensive discussions and then explored the

topics. The residential management development weekends

Sta at Newcastle Business School have given me so much
