4. History & Previous Work

1842 Jukes records an unconformity of the Cambrian & Precambrian rocks of the Avalon Peninsula

1868 Murray makes note of slate quarry near Brigus head and gold in the area

1881 Howley finds visible gold associated with chlorite and explores the Brigus area.

1914 Davis stakes calim over the Brigus Head Manganese deposit and seeks a grant, he is represented by Coates (a brother in law) who represents the mine to The American Manganese Manufacturing Company of Pennsylvania; starts initial mining and processing;

1915 Dale examines manganese deposit notes several pits sunk;

1917 Charles Wentmore of Sydney, Cape Bretton Nova Scotia convinces the Government of Newfoundland to give him the rights to the manganese mine under the War Measures Act, promising to pay $8 per ton of ore already mined and $4 per ton of ore to be mined in August, byNovember he takes the mined ore and leaves;

1919 Buddington describes the Marysvale Fault;

1920 160 tonnes of Mn ore shipped;

1933 The area is explored by Snelgrove for the Geological Survey of Newfoundland who follow up onthe gold with no success finding any gold;

1940 Flaherty examines manganese for the government of Newfoundland;

1940 Sudes trenches and examines deposit;

1941 Brigus Manganese limited carry out trenching;

1944 Macaulay reports on an examination of the manganese deposit and gives a resource base;

1953 Hutchinson & Scott examine Manganese deposit for the geological survey of Canada;

1953 Hutchinson reports on the regional geology for the geological survey of Canada;

1956 Campbell reports on the experimental electro-smelting of manganese ore from Brigus;

1957 McCartney maps the Holyrood area for the Geological Survey of Canada (McCartney, 1957);

1967 McCartney produces Memoir 341 and map of the Holyrood & Whitborne areas for the Geological Survey of Canada, locally describes the Mn occurrences and maps the geology of thelocal area of Colliers Bay. (McCartney, 1967);

1974 Note was made of the economic potential of limestone on the property;

2008 Ryan reports on exploration of the Manganese deposit at Brigus;

2011 The author stakes the mineral licence and conducts initial exploration.

5. Regional & Local Geology

Regional Geology

The Red Rock Pond property is part of the Avalon Zone of Eastern Newfoundland. This zone occupies the northern most portion of the Appalachian Avalonian Belt, a succession of late Proterozoic age volcanic, plutonic & volcanic sedimentary rocks, extending from the Avalon Peninsula, through the Atlantic provinces to the Carolinas and Northern Georgia, a distance of 3000 km (Williams, 1979).

Local Geology:

The geology of the property is comprised of the sedimentary Conception Group in contact with the Harbour Main Volcanics and overlain by the Cambrian Adeytown Group:

Conception Group:

Drook Formation: blue / gray / green siliceous siltstone & sandstone; silicified tuff.

Harbour Main Group:

Hhb member: Green to purple basaltic flows and pyroclastic rocks, clastic sedimentary rocks and gabbro.

Adeyton Group:

Chamberlains Brook formation: green and red shale or slate and thin limestone beds; manganiferous bed near base; spilitic cherty pillow lava.

Brigus Formation: red, pink and green shale or slate and thin limestone beds; basal conglomerate where formation rests directly on Precambrian rocks.

6. Exploration Program

During an unseasonably mild February 6th, 2016, a trip was made to the mineral licence to identify the location of the historic workings.

In a conversation with Gerald Kennedy, manager of quarry rights with the Department of Natural Resources and from the area, in fall 2015 he had mentioned there were what appeared to be open cuts along the cliff face at the top of the ridge.

From this field visit, it appears the old pits and trenches on the inside slope of the top of a small ridge toward Conception Bay and follows a bed striking 20º and dipping approximately 40º. The ore from these pits appears to be a mixture of manganese carbonates (principally rhodochrosite) and where weathered, manganese oxides (i.e., psilomelane and pyrolusite). In addition to the manganese present in the deposit, a 1 to 2 cm wide white and red vein or bed of barite is seen in the hanging wall of the of the deposit, further work is required to determine the significance of this occurrence. Location: 335,705 E, 5,266,730 N.

7. Conclusion and Recommendations

With the verification of the historic manganese workings and the high grade mineralization, there is a distinct possibility a deposit of economic significance occurs in the area.

The following is recommended for the property:

1. A high detail mapping of the property to identify contacts, faults, beds and other important geological features;

2. A geochemical survey using the modern ICP-34 + Au assay techniques, of each individual bed and potential veins, both “mineralized” and “non-mineralized”;

3. A thin section analysis of the oxide, carbonate and silicate zones of the ore;4. Detail mapping of the main beds identified by historical workings;5. Bulk sample of the high grade portions of the deposit.
