The racy, food-friendliness typical of Germany and Alsace are tailor-made for the smo ed fish, oysters, ba ed hams and prime poultry of the season. Turn to pages 16 and 1 for t o fine riesling mixed cases, and to page 12 for a selection of 2 lsace, including a hristmas bonus from omaine on eyer. A 2006 Museum Release and a collection of single-vineyard magnums In 1 44, Mi e and Kate ra ovich and their son Mat , originally from the almatian coast of former Yugoslavia, arrived in Kumeu, north- est of Auc land. Over half a century later, the same family business is turning out e ealand’s finest chardonnay. 2 6

as an outstanding harvest for the grape, producing some of the purest fruit Michael ra ovich has experienced. We snapped up the opportunity to re-buy the minute stoc s remaining in e ealand of Kumeu iver’s three single-vineyard chardonnays Mat ’s, oddington and unting ill. Auckland Originally a component of the Kumeu state blend, north-facing oddington has been a fully-fledged cru’ since 2 6.

This is its maiden vintage, no evolved and mature, almost nutty, ripe and seductive but still perfectly poised. Michael ra ovich suggests an evolution period of t o to four years for oddington, and it’s certainly come of age, it ill

shine in its o n right. In contrast to the exuberant oddington style, it produces tighter, racier ines ith delightful floral notes. Accordingly, Michael recommends a longer maturation period of four to six years. This is absolutely perfect no , its trademar restraint, freshness and blossomy undertones still going strong. rin no to 2 16. 14% Only available as part of mixed case F-MX13232.

Auckland From the plot that made Kumeu’s reputation, planted by Mat himself in 1 , this is not merely prime Ki i

Moulin Touchais, Coteaux du LayonUni ue in the orld of ine, Moulin Touchais is a shy celebrity of a bygone age. It is the only ine bottled by this centuries-old estate, managed since 1988 by Jean-Marie Touchais. What sets the ines apart from others in the oteaux du ayon is their moderate residual sugar of 8 -9 grams per litre, little or no influence of botrytis (noble rot), early bottling in the spring follo ing the harvest, and long bottle maturation of at least ten years before release. There are currently an estimated thirty different vintages lying undisturbed in the labyrinth of historic cellars.

Early in 2 13 e visited to ma e the selection for our exclusive mixed case, pac ed at the domaine, ith notes on each of the ines. It celebrates three decades of this historic property, from the current release, the outstanding 2 3 bac to 1985, and including t o of the best vintages from the 199 s. The 1983, hich is offered individually, became an unexpected bonus, having been languishing in a forgotten corner for the last three decades. oded at around the 5 mar on our s eetness scale, hich places them intriguingly bet een the savoury course and the s eet, these are not typical expressions of oire chenin blanc but each is a rare piece of history brimming ith personality.
