Welcometo Newlands

Newlands Primary | Welcome

4

Newlands is an over-subscribed primary that has all the benefits of a small, single-form entry school. We know our children as individuals and strive to help them find their own unique talents, skills and abilities. Our wonderful grounds help us to encourage positive outdoor experiences for all of our pupils. The highest quality of teaching ensures excellent achievement year after year.

We are accredited by the British Council with the full ‘International School Award’ for providing ‘outstanding development of the international dimension in the curriculum’ and have partner schools in Sweden, Kenya and South Africa. Newlands pupils see themselves as global citizens who are able to make connections between their own experiences and life beyond. In recognition of the effective work that takes place we were awarded the ‘Times Educational Supplement – School of the Year 2015’ in the ‘International’ category – a fantastic achievement.

Learning outdoors is a vital part of the curriculum at our school. All of our pupils take part in residential visits in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Our school offers a broad and balanced curriculum that emphasises rich, contextualised learning and provides

a journey towards academic excellence year after year. We emphasise the natural world, the great outdoors and our collective responsibility in shaping the future.

Behaviour is ‘outstanding’. Our highly personalised framework for discipline is guided by a clear moral code – ‘the golden rules’ and our UNICEF ‘Rights Respecting’ ethos. As a UNICEF school we share a commitment to equal rights, shared responsibility and mutual respect. Children at Newlands grow to understand their wider responsibilities and strive to meet our high expectations.

At Newlands, all of us are passionate about success for every one of our pupils. I hope that this prospectus encourages you to find out more about our school.

OutstandingAchievement

Newlands Primary | Outstanding Achievement

At Newlands we are proud that standards for all our pupils, whatever their starting points, are very high. This is shown by:

• Outstanding teaching in every class which results in excellence and enjoyment throughout lessons.

• Our results: teacher assessments and examination results consistently place us in-line with the top 25% of schools nationally.

• The quality of relationships in school: pupils learn how to work together, how to support each other and how to take an active role as responsible citizens.

• The availability of a wide range of sporting and extra-curricular activities, including specialist provision from professional clubs such as the London Irish and Chelsea FC.

• Outstanding attendance: we consistently see over 97% school attendance because our pupils enjoy their learning, value their relationships and are keen not to ‘miss out’ on the experiences that we provide.

We focus on learning in-context. We emphasise outdoor learning, visits, trips and residential stays to promote key learning objectives for our pupils. We use actors, role-play, drama and the arts to bring a wide-range of subjects ‘to life’.

At Newlands Primary School, the curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant. It meets the needs of all children whatever their abilities. We ensure that our children have a range of learning experiences that challenge, stimulate and promote deep thinking and learning.

The aims of the curriculum are to:• value every child as an individual

development and an awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle

• enable children to be aware of the importance of arts and culture

• enable pupils to develop moral sensibility through carefully taught values

• develop the personal and social skills of each child

• develop independence• teach the skills of

communication, thinking, problem solving, collaboration, creativity and self-evaluation

• develop enterprise and financial capability awareness

• provide equality of access and the opportunity for all pupils to make progress

• prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life

Exceptional Care, Guidance and Support

Newlands Primary | Exceptional Care, Guidance and Support

Our pupils are confident and feel safe. They have an excellent understanding of what they can do to help and support each other during their time at school.

We are very proud of the way our older pupils care for our younger ones – they thrive on the many responsibilities and roles that exist within school.

‘PUPILS SAID THAT BULLYING ALMOST NEVER HAPPENS, AND THEY WERE CONFIDENT THAT ANY INCIDENTS WOULD BE DEALT WITH QUICKLY, BECAUSE THE ADULTS CARE FOR THEM SO WELL.’ (OFSTED)

‘PUPILS’ EXCEPTIONAL SPIRITUAL, MORAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IS DUE IN PART TO THE EXCELLENT LINKS WITH A RANGE OF PARTNERS, INCLUDING CHURCHES AND OTHER PLACES OF WORSHIP.’ (OFSTED)

Our school is committed to partnership work with parents and families. With parents, we work together to ensure that appropriate care, guidance and support is provided at every stage of school life.

A Rights Respecting School

Newlands Primary | A Rights Respecting School

16

We are very proud to be a UNICEF ‘Rights Respecting’ School. UNICEF explains that this is:

A Unicef Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. Children and young people and the school community learn about children’s rights by putting them

into practice every day. The Award is not just about what children do but also importantly what adults do – in Rights Respecting Schools, children’s rights are promoted and realised and adults and children work towards this together.’

‘…A PLACE WHERE WE CAN ALL FEEL CONFIDENT WITH OURSELVES AND IT ENCOURAGES US TO USE OUR VOICE. IT’S A SAFE ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE FEELS COMFORTABLE. WE KNOW WE HAVE TO RESPECT EACH OTHER’S OPINIONS AND THEY HAVE TO RESPECT YOURS TOO. EVERY CHILD IS TREATED THE SAME IN OUR SCHOOL AND WE’RE ALL SPECIAL IN OUR OWN WAY! A RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL IS A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE CARES FOR EACH OTHER. IT HAS HELPED ME BUILD MY CONFIDENCE. IT HAS HELPED ME RAISE AWARENESS OF INJUSTICE IN THE WORLD.”

BEHAVIOUR IS EXCELLENT, PARTICULARLY DURING BREAK TIMES; PUPILS ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER TO REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULES THEY HAVE HELPED TO DEVELOP, AND ARE SUPPORTIVE OF THOSE WHO MAY FEEL UPSET. PUPILS ARE FERVENT ABOUT RESPECTING THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS, AND WELL AWARE OF THEIR OWN CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS THIS, WHICH HELPED THE SCHOOL TO ACHIEVE THE RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL AWARD.’ (OFSTED)
